Dan Cates
Dan Cates

He was at or near the chip lead most of the day, but a wild final hand of the day solidified Dan Cates’ spot in Friday’s final five players of Event #56: $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

The poker icon and defending champion of this event scored a crazy double knockout of Koray Aldemir and Taylor Paur in Pot-Limit Omaha to end the day and finish with the chip lead of 9,075,000, just ahead of four-time WSOP bracelet winner Benny Glaser of Great Britain, and two-time bracelet winner Yuri Dzivielevski of Brazil.

Not far behind them at this illustrious international final table are bracelet winner and 2017 PPC runner-up Johannes Becker from Germany, and Naoya Kihara from Japan.

Recap of the Day

Day 4 began with 13 players, spread through three tables. The day’s first elimination to set up the final two tables came early as Matthew Gonzales fell in 13th place to Kihara in a Pot-Limit Omaha hand where his top two pair couldn’t hold against Kihara’s litany of draws.

The next elimination wouldn’t come until after the first break, when John Racener, who came into the day with just two big bets was eliminated in Omaha Hi-Lo by Dzivielevski to claim 12th place money.

Philip Sternheimer dropped just a couple of hands later in 11th place when his king-high flush was second-best to Cates’ ace-high flush.

After that, another pair of quick eliminations sent the entertaining Lou Garza home in 10th place and WSOP Player of the Year contender Daniel Weinman out in ninth.

Pot Limit Omaha brought another elimination as Cates felted 2013 PPC champion Matthew Ashton in eighth place to bring the field to the unofficial final table.

The final seven would then play for nearly four hours without anyone else sent to the rail before Cates finished the day with his PLO one-two punch of Aldemir and Paur.

Johannes Becker opened the action with a raise to 200,000 in the hijack and he was called by Dan Cates on the button. Taylor Paur then pushed all-in for 400,000 in the small blind, sending Koray Aldemir in the big blind into a frenzy. He carefully checked his stack and opted to call with 500,000 behind.

Both Becker and Cates called and the four players headed to the {10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{2-Spades} flop. Aldemir checked to Becker, who bet 300,000. Cates then cut out a raise to 1,275,000 and Aldemir mulled it over for half a minute before sigh-calling all-in.

Becker quickly got out of the way and the two short stacks already turned over their cards.

Taylor Paur: {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
Koray Aldemir: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

"I have a really good hand," Cates uttered without showing his cards just yet. He was reminded by Becker to turn them over and then flashed the {a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts} very much to the disbelief of not only Becker.

The {3-Spades} turn improved Cates to two pair and he held onto the lead on the {6-Clubs} river to eliminate Paur in 7th place and Aldemir in 6th place, ending Day Four.

All final chip counts and a recap of today's action are to follow.

A massive pot has just seen Yuri Dzivielevski rocket back near the chip lead, while Koray Aldemir is now on a very short stack.

Action started with Aldemir raising in the hijack, before he was three-bet on the button by Benny Glaser, then four-bet by Dzivielevski in the big blind.

Aldemir and Glaser called and the fuse was lit for fireworks.

The flop came {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, and Dzivielevski led right out with a bet. Both his opponents called, with Aldemir down to just over one big bet.

On the {6-Spades} turn, the players all checked to see the {q-Spades} fall on the river, ensuring that this huge pot would be scooped.

Dzivielevski again bet, eliciting a head shake and a quick fold from Aldemir. Glaser put in a hesitant call and saw the bad news.

Dzivielevski showed {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for a rivered Broadway straight to scoop the huge pot and cruise back near 8,000,000 chips.

Dan Cates opened to 125,000 under the gun but was met with a three-bet to 375,000 from Benny Glaser on the button.

Cates took his time before cutting out a four-bet to 875,000.

After a minute or so of studying and contemplation, Glaser five-bet all in for approximately 3,000,000.

Cates quickly mucked his hand, with Glaser saying "I didn't want a call," as he gathered his opponent's chips.

Matthew Ashton Eliminated in 8th Place ($155,421)

Matthew Ashton

Pot-Limit Omaha

Matthew Ashton raised to 175,000 on the button and was called by Dan Cates in the small blind.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and Cates checked. Ashton then bet the size of the pot (450,000), which represented a bit under half his remaining stack.

Cates then check-raised to put Ashton all in and the Brit called to risk his tournament life.

Matthew Ashton: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Dan Cates: {q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Hearts}

Both players had got it in with top pair, with Ashton holding the better kicker. However the {q-Diamonds}, gave Cates a second pair, and the {5-Clubs} on the river couldn't save the 2013 PPC champion, solidifying Cates' chip lead as the unofficial final table was reached.

Razz

Similar to the fate of Lou Garza on the other table, Daniel Weinman suffered two setbacks in Razz and that's all she wrote for him in 9th place. He made the pay jump and received a payday of $155,421.

Daniel Weinman: {x-}{x-} / {8-}{4-}{j-}{q-} / {x-}
Taylor Paur: {x-}{x-} / {6-}{3-}{7-}{q-} / {x-}

First up, Weinman invested three streets against Taylor Paur and eventually paid off on seventh street to get shown the {9-}{8-}{3-} by Paur, which he couldn't beat.

Daniel Weinman; {a-}{8-} / {4-}{3-}{3-}{10-} / {10-}
Yuri Dzivielevski: {8-}{6-} / {5-}{q-}{4-}{3-} / {4-}

Weinman had most of his short stack in with a dry smile on the face and had an eight draw on fifth street when he was all-in for 365,000 total. Yuri Dzivielevski had a made queen by then and then spiked a trey on sixth street to make an eighty-six.

Weinman only received a ten on sixth and wasn't drawing dead yet. He peeled the final card and flipped over a ten as he paired up for the second time to bow out in 9th place for $155,421.

Lou Garza
Lou Garza

Omaha Hi-Lo

Within two hands, the short stack of Lou Garza was reduced to zero and he has become the tenth place finisher.

He first defended the big blind against a raise by Benny Glaser and check-called the {9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop. On the {9-Hearts} turn, Garza checked again with 210,000 behind and Glaser bet again. Garza sigh-folded and exposed a jack-high combo with diamonds.

"Was I drawing dead?" he asked and Glaser replied "no, but I had a very good hand ... ace five nine."

One hand later, Dan Cates raised on the button and Garza reluctantly moved in from the small blind for Naoya Kihara in the small blind and Cates to call. Kihara check-called a bet on the {q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop before doing so again on the {a-Diamonds} turn and {j-Diamonds} river.

Garza tabled the {k-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, which was scooped by Kihara's {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades} for the high and Cates' {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Hearts} for the nut low.

Matthew Ashton: {x-}{x-}/{a-Clubs}{2-Spades} - folded fourth street

From his short stack, Philip Sternheimer defended his bring-in versus a completion from Matthew Ashton and a call from Dan Cates.

Picking up an ace on fourth street, Cates led out and was only called by Sternheimer.

Cates then paired his ace on fifth street and bet again. Sternheimer raised to commit himself to the pot, leaving only 20,000 behind.

Cates just called, but put in the last 20,000 on sixth street, as did Seternheimer, with Cates revealing he made his ace-high flush on sixth street, and that Sternheimer was drawing dead, as the {a-Clubs} had been folded by Ashton earlier in the hand.

After coming back from the break, the game variant changed and table short stack John Racener was in the blinds. He raised it up to get called by Yuri Dzivielevski and they headed to the {8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop on which Racener was all-in and called by Dzivielevski.

John Racener: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Yuri Dzivielevski: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{8-Spades}

Racener had the superior pair and low draw but the {q-Hearts} turn and {j-Diamonds} river runout improved Dzivielevski to a full house and ended his run with a bad beat. Dzivielevski scooped the entire pot and Racener had to settle for 12th place, which comes with a payday of $100,866.

Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

Defending Champion Dan Cates appears poised to make another run at defending his title as he continues to accumulate chips here on Day 4.

Recently in a hand of Triple Draw, he splashed out a raise in first position and was only called by 2013 PPC champ Matthew Ashton.

The players each drew two cards and checked, with Ashton now drawing just one, while Cates still needed two.

Cates then called a bet from Ashton, and on the final draw, each player now stood pat.

On the final betting round, Ashton checked to Cates who thought for a moment, then fired out a bet.

Ashton pondered his decision for a couple of minutes before making the call.

"Jungleman" showed {9-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, and Ashton mucked his cards, sending a healthy pot to Cates, who now soars over 7,000,000 chips.
