Brad Ruben Goes for Fourth Bracelet; Jaswinder Lally Seeks to Go Back-to-Back

Nível 25

Play has concluded on Day 2 of Event #4: $1,500 Dealer’s Choice, and at the end of 10 hour-long levels, it is Brad Ruben who leads the 14 surviving players into the final day.

The three-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner will go for a fourth WSOP victory on Friday in a commanding chip position with 2,102,000 chips. Only Jorge Walker (1,420,000), who was at the top of the chip counts for much of the day, has even half the number of chips as Ruben.

But Ruben’s path to further WSOP glory won’t be easy. Bracelet winners Ben Yu (848,000), Naoya Kihara (808,000), Marco Johnson (521,000), and Brian Rast (466,000) are also still alive looking to add another piece of jewelry to their collection.

Poker commentator Norman Chad rode a short-stack for much of the day before securing a quadruple-up during the final level and made it through Day 2 with 526,000 as he seeks his second appearance at a WSOP final table.

Then there is Jaswinder Lally, the defending champion of this event, who secured a massive double-up earlier in the day to climb to the top of the leaderboard and ended with 565,000.

Day 2 Action

Day 2 began with 123 survivors from a starting field of 430. John Racener, Mike Matusow, and Brandon Shack-Harris all hit the rail before the money was reached. Two-time bracelet winner Nathan Gamble was eliminated during hand-for-hand play, but a recount showed he finished in 65th place, the first player to be in the money.

From there, Todd Brunson (44th), former WSOP Player of the Year Robert Campbell (42nd), and John Monnette (36th) would all find themselves making the walk over to the payout cage. Adam Friedman, the three-time defending champion of the $10,000 version of this event, was well on his way to making it to Day 3 before being eliminated on the last hand of the night by Walker.

The remaining players will return tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time inside the Bally’s Event Center to play down to a champion.

PokerNews will be by the table providing all the action until a new WSOP bracelet winner is crowned.

Adam Friedman Eliminated in 15th Place ($5,993)

Adam Friedman

With twenty seconds left on the clock for the final level of the evening, Adam Friedman selected Pot Limit 2-7 Triple Draw for the final game.

Jorge Walker opened for about 60,000 from the small blind, half of Friedman's stack.

"Alright, let's go. All in," said Friedman, who moved in from the big blind for about 120,000. Walker quickly called.

Both players drew two cards on the first draw. On the second draw, both players again drew two cards. On the final draw, Walker stood pat, and Friedman drew one.

Cards on their backs, Walker showed he stood pat with {9-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. Friedman exposed {8-}{7-}{5-}{3-} and needed one good card to keep him alive for Day 3.

"Fifty-fifty," said Friedman. He slowly peeled a card, and it was low. Unfortunately, he made a pair on the {5-} and his day was over.

"Good luck tomorrow, boys," said Friedman with a gracious exit.

A-5 Triple Draw

Norman Chad raised before the draw and Jorge Walker three-bet. Adam Friedman called, as did Christopher Roman and Chad.

Friedman, Roman, and Chad took one, while Walker drew two. Friedman bet, Roman called, Chad called all in for less, and Walker stuck around to the second draw.

Friedman stood pat and bet again. "He has a betting disorder," Chad said as Roman and Walker called again.

Chad rang his bell and placed it in the middle as all three players checked after the third draw. Chad turned over {a-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} to scoop the main pot, while Friedman took the side pot with a lesser ace.

Rast Trips Up Kihara

Five-Card Draw

With a pot of about 150,000 pre-draw, both Brian Rast and Naoya Kihara each drew one card.

Out of position, Rast was first to act. He assembled a large bet of 125,000 and slid the chips into the middle.

Kihara thought for about thirty seconds before making the call.

"Three eights," announced Rast, and showed {8-}{8-}{8-}{6-}{2-}.

"Eights?" asked Kihara, implying the number mattered. He laid down three cards face down before throwing all five cards into the muck.

Josh Tabak was all in by fifth street and up against Norman Chad and Brad Ruben.

Norman Chad: {x-}{x-}/{3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}/{x-}
Brad Ruben: {x-}{x-}/{q-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{2-Spades}{5-Diamonds}/{x-}

Ruben bet and both sixth and seventh streets, with Chad coming along with a call.

"I have a wheel," Ruben announced, turning over {6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}.

"A wheel? That's pretty darn good," Chad said as he mucked his board.

"I started with the wheel. There's no skill in that," Ruben responded as he took the big pot off Chad and knocked out Tabak.

No-Limit Hold 'Em

Nicolas Fountotos was looking for a double, and he found his chance in No-Limit Hold 'Em. From late position, he jammed his last 29,000, just under three big blinds in the game. Action folded to Naoya Kihara who made the call from the big blind.

"I have a premium," said Fountotos, who rolled over {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} at the right time. Kihara showed {q-Spades}{3-Spades}.

Fountotos was feeling good before the flop, but the {a-}{2-}{5-} put some fear into him.

"Oh, no," were the only words he could get out before the {4-} landed on the turn to have him drawing dead to a chop.

The {10-} river sealed his fate and ended his evening.

Rast Comes Through for Railbird Kessler

Big O

Adam Friedman raised from early position to 25,000. Action folded over the short-stacked Brian Rast who raised it up to 80,000 with about 50,000 behind.

"There's my sleeper pick," all of a sudden Allen Kessler had showed up and pointed out Brian Rast was his fantasy pick this year.

"Brian Rast is no sleeper. What has this world come to that Brian Rast is a sleeper pick?" replied Friedman while he thought over his decision.

"He doesn't usually play, I had inside information," said Kessler.

"You mean you called him? That's called direct information Allen," Friedman said, still thinking.

"This is your chance to gamble and beat me. Instead of picking me off the rest of the night, get it all right here," said Rast.

"All my dreams can come true in one evening," replied Friedman. "You want to know one of my biggest fears? Allen Kessler beating me heads up for a bracelet. Imagine that as a poker trivia question. 'Who did Allen Kessler beat for a bracelet,' and it's your name."

"Alright, you can have this one," said Friedman, who folded, much to the delight of both Rast and Kessler.

Action picked up on sixth street with Tabak showing a pair and betting. He found a caller in Ruben and took the hand to seventh.

Both cards dealt, Tabak now slowed down and checked. Ruben went for the bet and Tabak made the call.

Ruben showed the {k-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Spades} in the hole for trips and enough to rake the pot.
