Mixed Game Experts Get Their Shot Today in the $1,500 Dealer's Choice Event

2021 champion Jaswinder Lally
2021 champion Jaswinder Lally

An aspiring World Series of Poker bracelet winner will have their entire poker skillset tested today when Event #4: $1,500 Dealer’s Choice 6-Handed begins at 3 p.m. local time.

In order to navigate through this field of mixed game specialists, a player has to prove their acumen at 20 different poker variants, from WSOP staples such as No-Limit Hold’em, Seven Card Stud, and Pot-Limit Omaha, to formats that are only played in this event such as Badugi, Badeucy, and 5-Card Draw High. Adaptability and a mastery of all of the games will be key the next three days.

This event was introduced to the WSOP schedule in 2014. Previous winners include Robert Mizrachi, Carol Fuchs, David Bach, and Scott Clements. In 2021, Jaswinder “Jesse” Lally of Canada outlasted a field of 307 players to win his first WSOP bracelet and $97,915, defeating bracelet winner A.J. Kelsall heads-up. Nathan Gamble and Dealer's Choice legend Adam Friedman also made deep runs that ended just before the final table.

2-7 Triple Draw Lowball

Jaswinder Lally, the defending champion of this event, drew three on the first draw in a four-way pot that also involved Seamus Blackmore and Frankie O'Dell. Lally, O'Dell, and Blackmore checked before the fourth player bet 200.

Lally raised to 400, O'Dell folded, while his other two opponents called. All three players drew one and Blackmore bet 400 after Lally checked. Lally and the fourth player both called.

"This is the one that counts, baby," the fourth player said as they each drew one again. Lally checked, Blackmore bet 400, the other opponent folded, while Lally called.

Blackmore showed {8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for an eight-low and Lally mucked.

2-7 Triple Draw Lowball

Adam Friedman was forced to call a 23,400 bet from Troy Peace after believing Peace had only called his bet, but had instead said pot.

Peace stood pat on the final draw and Friedman drew two, then folded when Peace moved all in.

"Sorry about that," Peace said.

"I'm mad at myself," Friedman answered.

On the next hand, Friedman and an opponent got into a raising war that ended with his opponent all in for around 20,000.

The all-in player stood pat on all three draws, while Friedman drew one on the third draw. "He has an ace. If I don't win this one," Friedman said when his opponent showed {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}.

Friedman turned over {8-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, then hit a jack on his last card to make a better low and knock out his opponent.

Allen Kessler was nursing a short stack when he got it all in against Roger Battles and Peter Dirksen. Kessler was showing an ace and was dealt a king as Battles and Dirksen built a side pot.

"I don't even know what I have," Kessler said as he checked his hand on seventh street. He didn't even wait to see the action between Battles and Dirksen before turning his hand face down and getting up from his seat to head to the rail.

Dirksen finished with {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} to win the pot with trip sixes. "How do I not even make a low," asked Battles as he flashed {a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}.

Five Card Draw

Action was heads up after the draw and Josh Arieh was all in for his short stack against Adam Friedman. Arieh had drawn one and Friedman tabled {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds} for aces and tens. Arieh peeled his fifth card with a look of disappointment and flashed {q-}{q-}{9-}{9-}{j-} before he tossed it in the muck and made his way for the door.

Friedman continued his steady climb towards the top of the leaderboard with the pot. The mixed game specialist is looking to set himself up with an opportunity to win a Dealer's Choice bracelet for the fourth WSOP in a row.
