Event #36: $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better Gets Underway at 3 P.M. PDT

Jermaine Reid
Jermaine Reid

The action from the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally's and Paris, Las Vegas continues with Day 1 of Event #36: $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo 8 or Better kicking off at 3 p.m. local time.

This is the third stud tournament of the series, but the first that operates under Hi-Lo rules. For those unfamiliar, this variant is a split pot game. Half the pot is awarded to best high hand, with the second portion going to the player who makes a low hand.

Alex Livingston won his first WSOP bracelet in Event #9: $1,500 Seven Card Stud at the beginning of the series while Adam Friedman joined the five-time bracelet winner club after his triumph in Event #22: $10,000 Seven Card Stud Championship just a few days ago.

Jermaine Reid was the player to take down this event last year. He topped the 372-entry field and overcame a final table that included the likes of John Monnette, Esther Taylor and Carol Fuchs. Reid secured his biggest career cash, taking home the $113,459 up top and his first WSOP Gold bracelet.

All players begin with a 25,000 starting stack, and they will have to navigate fifteen 40-minute levels to bag and tag for Day 2 (no reentries are allowed). Players will receive a 15-minute break every three levels today. Late registration is open until the start of Level 10 (at approximately 9:45 p.m.).

This is a three-day event, with levels increasing to 60 minutes for Days 2 and 3. The plan for Day 2 is to play ten more levels and Day 3 is when a winner will be crowned.

As always, be sure to stick with PokerNews to keep up to date with all the bracelet action from the 2022 WSOP.

On fifth street, action checked around before Paz-Guitierrez bet on sixth street. The original raiser mucked but the remaining player called.

Paz-Gutierrez bet on the river and was quickly called. He turned over his down cards to show that he had a straight flush and scooped the entire pot as his opponent could show a low to claim any spoils.

Decosmo Wins Boat-Over-Boat Against Greenstein

Opponent: {x-}{x-} / {7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{8-Clubs} / {x-}

PokerNews caught up with the action on sixth street when the floor was called over to make a ruling on the hand.

There had been a bet, call and raise before Nate Silver attempted to call. However, Silver had put out enough chips for a raise and the floor ruled that the raise would stand.

Brian Decosmo then re-raised all-in and Barry Greenstein, Silver and a third player in the hand all called.

Greenstein bet on seventh street and both opponents called. Greenstein tabled fours full of deuces for half of the side pot as the fourth player in the hand had a low.

Decosmo then tabled queens full of nines for a better full house to put a bad beat on Greenstein and be awarded half of the main pot.

"That hand kind of played itself," Decosmo consoled Greenstein.

Brandon Shack-Harris: {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}/{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}/{x-}

Action was picked up on fifth street, with a player check-calling a bet from Brandon Shack-Harris.

On sixth street, Shack-Harris bet, which put his opponent at risk of elimination. The player called off his last 1,000 chips.

Shack-Harris was ahead with a pair of eights while his opponent would need to catch the right card to outright win or at least take half the pot.

Shack-Harris said he would turn over his last card first and it was the {8-Diamonds}, giving him trips. His opponent would need to hit a {4-} to scoop the pot while having some outs to the chop.

The player turned over his {3-Clubs}, giving him an inferior three-of-a-kind. Shack-Harris wished the player well as he sent his tablemate to the rail.

Kelsall bet again on seventh street and Lousen took a moment before calling.

"You might scoop me," Kelsall told Lousen.

"I don't think so," she replied before showing an ace-high to go with her low hand.

Kelsall peeled the {5-Spades} and turned it face-up before mucking in defeat.

"And she didn't think she could scoop me!" he cried.

There is some old school cool in the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo event, with James Woods and John Cernuto sat next to each other on the same table.

Action was picked up on fourth street, with a player all-in and up against the two aforementioned players.

Cernuto called bets from Woods on fifth and sixth street before both players checked back on seventh street.

Woods took the side pot with a pair of aces. Woods also took half of the main pot with his high hand while the all-in player survived by making a low.

Chad Left With Dregs; More Than Quadruples Up

Jesper Olsen left Norman Chad with just 400 chips and the latter was all in on the next hand against Karina Jett, Jesper Olsen and another player.

Norman Chad: {x-}{6-}{4-}/{5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Jesper Olsen: {x-}{x-}/{5-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{k-Clubs} - Folded Fifth Street
Karina Jett: {8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{x-}/{a-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{x-}

Olsen bet on fourth street with Jett being the only caller. Olsen folded after he faced a bet from Jett on fifth street.

Jett scooped a small side pot and told Chad that he had to beat a pair of sixes to stay in the competition. Chad turned over his down cards and celebrated when he saw that he made a seven-high straight.

The table then broke up the very next hand. The dealer gave Jett her new seat card but Jett thought it was the start of her next hand. She peeled the card to see her new table seat and then burst out in hysterics when she realised what she had done.
