Welcome to Day 2 of Event #27: $1,500 Shootout No-Limit Hold'em

JJ Liu
JJ Liu

The 2022 World Series of Poker in its new home at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas will continue its one and only shootout event, Event #27: $1,500 Shootout No-Limit Hold'em, as Day 2 will kick off at noon local time.

Day 1 saw the field reach the maximum size of 1,000 entrants. By the end of the night, that field had been whittled down to just 100 players. Those who survived will return today and the field will be narrowed down to just 10 players by the end of Day 2. The 100 who made it to Day 2 will at least take home the minimum cash of $5,835, while those who survive and advance to Day 3's final table will be vying for the first place prize of $240,480 and a gold WSOP bracelet.

Notables who made it through to Day 2 include 2016 WSOP Main Event Champion Qui Nguyen, Women in Poker Hall of Fame Inductee JJ Liu, and four time WSOP bracelet winners Tom Schneider and Brian Yoon. Some notables who failed to bag their chips for Day 2 include 2013 WSOP Main Event Champion Ryan Riess, four time WSOP bracelet winners Scott Seiver and George Danzer, and last year's winner and runner up of this event, Gershon Distenfeld and Johan Schumacher.

All players will start the day with approximately 250,000 chips. Some stacks will be marginally smaller as some unsold stacks on day one were blinded into the well before the event sold out. Levels will last 40 minutes with a 15 minute break scheduled after every third level. A 60 minute dinner break is scheduled for after level 9, expected to be around 6:30 p.m. local time. Blinds will begin at 2,000-4,000 with a 4,000 big blind ante.

Be sure to stay tuned in to PokerNews for comprehensive coverage of this and all other events at the 2022 WSOP at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.

Action picked up on the turn in a heads-up pot between Ryan Andrade in the cutoff and Landon Tice in the big blind. The board read {3-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{k-Spades}.

Andrade bet 25,000 when Tice checked to him and Tice went for the check-call.

On the {q-Hearts} river, Tice checked. After some thought, Andrade checked behind.

"Queen," announced Tice.

"Good," said Andrade.

Tice scooped the early pot to take the table chip lead.

Matakis Puts the Pressure on

Nível 13 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

Action started on the flop with the board reading {9-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Ezequiel Waigel checked from the big blind, Ian Matakis bet 18,000 from the cutoff. Waigel called.

On the {k-Hearts} turn, Waigel checked it over again. Matakis grabbed a stack of chips and bet 45,000. Waigel thought for about a minute and a half and then folded.

"Alright, gents, I've already decided I'm going to be pretty aggressive with the clock calls today, as a fair warning," said tablemate Craig Post. "What is that, four hands down, 15 minutes in?"

Griffeth Wins Pot, but Not Without Penalty

Nível 14 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Roongsak Griffeth
Roongsak Griffeth

Action picked up on the turn with just over 100,000 in the pot. The board showed {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{j-Spades}{6-Clubs} Raul Torres had announced a bet of 80,000, but only slid one stack of 20,000 in so far.

Roongsak Griffeth immediately went all in on his left. Torres, still completing his original bet of 80,000, slid a second stack of 20,000. Griffeth took this for a call and flipped his {k-Spades}{j-Clubs} over.

The floor was called and ruled that Torres was simply still placing his original bet and action was on him. With his opponent's cards exposed, Torres folded.

Griffeth received a one-orbit penalty for exposing his cards with action pending.

Sudell Turns Higher Straight to Knockout Matakis

Nível 14 : 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Derek Sudell
Derek Sudell

Ian Matakis opened the action from early position with a bet of 11,000. Derek Sudell, in middle position, put in a raise to 28,000. The rest of the table got out of the way before Matakis made the call.

The flop came {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}, at which Sudell fired another 23,000. Matakis raised to 65,000. Sudell moved all in and Matakis made the snap-call with the effective stack of 167,000.

Ian Matakis: {6-Spades}{7-Spades}
Derek Sudell: {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Matakis had flopped a ten high straight, but Sudell had an open ender to a jack or queen high straight. That draw got there on the {7-Hearts} turn. The {9-Spades} river changed nothing. Sudell's jack high straight was just good enough to beat Matakis' ten high straight, giving Sudell the big pot and sending Matakis out of the tournament.

Kevin Song

With 85,000 in the middle, Tom Schneider bet 60,000 from the button with the board reading {q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Kevin Song made the call from the small blind and a middle position player folded.

When the {9-Clubs} hit the river, Song led from the small blind with an all-in bet, 127,000 effective and covering Schneider.

Schnieder didn't think long before folding and Song added more to his big stack.

Action picked up on the turn with a board of {3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}. Shawn Wilmot bet 53,000 into a pot of about 90,000. Only Karol Bogusz made the call in position.

The {k-Clubs} was the river card and Wilmot fired a final bullet, going all in for the 86,000 effective in Bogusz's stack. After thinking for about two minutes, Bogusz made the call.

Wilmot showed {5-Spades}{7-Clubs} but Bogusz called with the {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} to get the full double.

Liu's Kings Hold to Scoop Big Pot

Nível 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
JJ Liu
JJ Liu

JJ Liu opened the action from under the gun for 13,000. John Strawser raised to 23,000 from early position. Action folded back around to Liu who made the call.

Strawser continued for 40,000 on the {3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop. Liu made the call.

On the {6-Clubs} turn, Strawser fired another barrel, this time for 60,000. Liu found the call again.

On the {9-Hearts} river it was Liu who was the aggressor, with a bet of 85,000. Strawser thought for a minute or two, before making the call. He turned over {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} as Liu turned over {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}. Neither player had connected with any part of the board, meaning Liu's kings were still good.
