The first of two starting flights of the Colossus attracted 4,217 entrants to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. Some 632 of those starters made it into the money places, and only 484 players were left at the end of Day 1a.
The Day 1a chip leader is none other than Hiep Tran who crammed 1,308,000 chips into his overnight bag.Eight other players finished their flight with seven-figure stacks, including Hogyun Kang (1,297,000), bracelet winner Vincas Tamasauskas (1,241,000), Martin Ryan (1,178,000), and Charbel Kanterjian (1,118,000).
Jeff Platt (582,000), fresh from a fourth-place finish in the $1,000 Double Stack event, looks set for another deep run. Platt finished with an above-average stack.
Plenty of well-known players are among the Day 1a survivors. They include former WSOP champions Thi Truong (737,000), Kevin Song (689,000), Barbara Enright (411,000), Chris Wallace (309,000), Gary Benson (241,000), Pete Chen (231,000), and former Main Event champion Robert Varkonyi (175,000).

Martin Ryan raised the button to 32,000 and Marle Cordeiro three-bet from the small blind to 125,000. The big blind quickly folded and Ryan made the call.
The dealer spread a flop of and Cordeiro put in a continuation bet of 65,000. Ryan raised to 200,000 and Cordeiro went into the tank for about a minute before jamming her stack of just over 300,000 in the middle. Ryan made the call and both hands were tabled.

Both players flopped an overpair but Cordeiro was in the lead with pocket queens. The turn completed Ryan's flush but still gave Cordeiro some outs to make a full house. The river however, was not what Cordeiro needed and she was eliminated just as the night finished.

Jeff Boski shoved his stack of 75,000 in the middle from early position and Jeff Heiberg called off his 68,000 from two spots over.

Boski ran into the overpair of Heiberg and the flop was no help. Boski picked up some life on the turn but the on the river was a brick.
Boski was left with only 7,000 chips and was seen walking to the payout desk shortly after.

The money bubble has officially burst, 632 players made the money.
On a flop of Lucas Tabarin put in a bet of 45,000 and his opponent on the button called.
The turn was the and Tabarin fired for a second time, this time for 75,000 and his opponent made the call.
The fell on the river and Tabarin grabbed two stacks of reds, took two off from one of them and with two hands put them in the middle. Facing the 190,000 bet his opponent went deep into the tank and eventually, threw in one chip to signal a call.
