Chip Leader Sandrock Faces Tough Test to Start Day 2

JC Tran sits in the top ten for Day 2
JC Tran sits in the top ten for Day 2

Chris Sandrock takes his 748,500 chips and the lead into Day 2 of Event #45: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship Sunday at the World Series of Poker.

The casino owner from Helena, Montana will be trying to extend his lead, and hold off a remaining field of 131 players plus late registrants (registration is open until Day 2 begins at 2:00 pm local time), that features some of poker’s biggest names, including JC Tran (348,500), David Benyamine (290,500), and Brett Richey (286,000), who all finished Day 1 in the top 10 in chips.

Sandrock couldn’t ask for a tougher table draw to start the day however, as seated with him will be two-time WSOP bracelet winner in PLO, including this event in 2016, Brandon Shack-Harris (212,500), Lithuanian star Dominykas Karmazinas (115,000), and Swedish star Simon Mattsson (40,500).

Closest to Sandrock entering the day will be Arthur Morris (533,500), whose PLO accomplishments include a 24th place finish in the $25,000 WSOP High Roller event in 2015.

The field entering Day 2 is also littered with plenty more notables and some of the most talented Pot-Limit Omaha players in the world, including Sam Soverel (278,500), Joni Jouhkimainen (192,000), and Niklas Astedt (172,500). They’ll all carry healthy stacks into play, while some other big names like Mike Matusow (88,000), Brian Rast (67,500), Mike Gorodinsky (60,500), John Racener (60,000), and Dan Zack (47,000) will have some work to do to start the day.

Play begins in the Amazon room at level 11 with blinds of 1,000 and 2,500 with a 2,500 big blind ante. Ten 60-minute levels will be played with a 60-minute dinner break after level 16 (approximately 8:30 pm local time). The players will likely reach the money later in the day.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for live coverage of this and every World Series of Poker event from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Chip Leader's Table Gets Tougher

Nível 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Chris Sandrock
Chris Sandrock

As mentioned in our Day 2 preview, chip leader Chris Sandrock had one of the toughest tables in the room to look forward to, with Dominykas Karmazinas, Simon Mattsson, and Brandon Shack-Harris joining him.

Well, that table just got even tougher as one of the late registrants, Stephen Chidwick just sat to his direct left.

It should be an interesting day for Sandrock at table 435.

Montgomery Busts Hyman

Nível 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Kyle Montgomery
Kyle Montgomery

Kyle Montgomery raised to 5,500 and was called by Michael Perrone in the small blind. Jared Hyman then raised to 22,000 in the big blind and was called by both opponents. On the {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop, Perrone checked and Hyman did so as well for Montgomery to bet 25,000 and earn two calls.

The {3-Diamonds} turn was checked to Montgomery, who announced pot. Perrone folded while Hyman called all-in for what appeared to be nearly 100,000.

Jared Hyman: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Kyle Montgomery: {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}

"I need a five or three," Hyman said in table chat. However, the five was dead as Montgomery would have made the superior full house. Only a trey would do and the {4-Diamonds} river was a blank to send Hyman to the rail.

Rheem Eliminated by Younes

Nível 12 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

Three players from early position limped, including Nader Younes under the gun. Tony Hartmann called in the small blind, and Chino Rheem checked to see a flop. All five players checked around on the {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop, and Hartmann took the lead after the {7-Diamonds} turn. Rheem raised the pot, only to see Younes re-raise enough to put both blinds all in. The other early position players folded, as did Hartmann, but Rheem called and flipped over his cards.

Chino Rheem: {a-Spades}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{3-Spades}
Nader Younes: {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}

Rheem was drawing thin and the {3-Diamonds} river was no help, as Younes added new chips to his stack with the elimination.

Wallace Survives Four-Way All-In; Imsirovic and Beauprez Eliminated

Nível 13 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Ali Imsirovic
Ali Imsirovic

The phone cameras were grabbing a four-way all-in over on table 427 as the action had escalated with the flop showing {q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} with three players at risk against big stack Chris Sandrock.

Ali Imsirovic: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Aaron Wallace: {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}
John Beauprez: {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Chris Sandrock: {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Sandrock spiked the {10-Clubs} turn and another player at the table remarked "see, you can't lose". There was one more card to come which happened to be the {3-Hearts} river and that improved Wallace to a full house. He survived the carnage and almost quadrupled up while Ali Imsirovic and John Beauprez were eliminated.

Sam Soverel

Adam Hendrix raised it up to get called by Sam Soverel and Nathan Zimnik raised the pot. Hendrix then repotted and Soverel went with it, Zimnik made it a three-way all-in.

Adam Hendrix: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Sam Soverel: {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}

Brian Okin

On the first hand of play back from dinner, Brandon Schaefer raised from the cutoff into Brian Okin's big blind. Okin put in his last 49,000 chips and was at risk of being the bubble boy.

Brian Okin: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Brandon Schaefer: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

Okin was flopped dead when the dealer spread {6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}, ending Okin's night in the worst spot possible, while the remaining 53 players are all guaranteed $16,141

Tran Felted by Zack

JC Tran
JC Tran

JC Tran opted to check-call a bet worth 50,000 on the {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop and then got his remaining chips in after the {2-Spades} turn when facing further aggression by Daniel Zack.

JC Tran: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}
Daniel Zack: {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}

Zack had flopped the world and turned trips deuces to leave Tran on thin ice. No miracle appeared with the {a-Clubs} river and that spelled the end for Tran in 39th place.
