Fireworks Fly as Zack, Deeb & Hellmuth All Progress on Day 1 of Event #28: $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

The dust has settled after 10 hours of play and Day 1 of Event #28: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em is officially history. Today’s event was the first of its kind at the World Series of Poker, with 20,000-chip starting stacks and 40-minute levels throughout the entire tournament. The result was a staggering 2,479 participants. Due to the accelerated structure of the event, the tournament made it into the money at the very end of the day. In total, there were 372 players who made it into the money and 346 who advanced to Day 2.

When play finished for the evening, Giuseppe Pantaleo was the overnight chip leader with 498,000 chips, with Steve McNally his nearest challenger with 442,500. Pantaleo and McNally were followed by plenty of other players who will progress with genuine hopes of winning the tournament or at the very least going on a deep run. Other big stacks to make Day 2 include Yang Zhang, (418,500), Iaron Lightbourne, (398,000), Jacob Naumann, (370,500), and Phong ‘Turbo’ Nguyen, (333,000).

Perhaps the most exciting hand of the tournament occurred near the end of the night when play was hand-for-hand. Recent WSOP bracelet winner Dan Zack called a reraise all in on a {k-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} flop with {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} against the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} of Syed Ali Mustafa. Zack hit a {9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} runout on turn and river to make a flush and after both stacks were counted, he covered Mustafa by just 1,500 to sent him home on the bubble. Zack ended the day with 372,000, and further increased his chances of becoming the 2019 WSOP Player of the Year, a race he leads by some margin already.

Many other notable players advanced on Day 1, such as Ryan Laplante (321,000), Shaun Deeb, (252,000), Tim West, (231,000), Phil Hellmuth, (160,500), and Jeff Madsen, (84,000).

Day 2 will resume Wednesday at noon local time with blinds returning to 2,500/5,000 with a 5,000 big blind ante. Levels will be 40 minutes each and play is scheduled to continue until the final six players remain. There will be 15-minute breaks every three levels, or two hours of play, with a 60-minute dinner break after the ninth level of play in the day. The PokerNews team will be covering all the drama from start to finish, so stay tuned to catch all the action from the latest low buy-in, high excitement event at the 50th annual World Series of Poker.

Zack Busts Mustafa To Burst Bubble

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Syed Ali Mustafa
Syed Ali Mustafa

On the bubble, there was an all in and a call announced as Dan Zack and Syed Ali Mustafa both got it in on a {k-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} board with ace-king.

Dan Zack: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Syed Ali Mustafa: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Zack was freerolling the nut flush and was in luck as the turn and river brought {9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for him to get there. The dealer then tallied the chips, and Zack's total was 116,000. Mustafa's was just short of that at 114,500, sending him to the felt.

'Racks' Rolling With Average Stack on Bubble

Nível 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Kevin Roster
Kevin Roster

"I'm alive!" proclaimed Kevin 'Racks' Roster as his opponent folded preflop. The opponent had opened to 9,000 from early position and 'Racks' three-bet him from the button to 27,000, prompting the fold.

On the very next hand, Roster opened from the cutoff to 9,500 and his raise got through everybody as he took down a second consecutive pot before the flop and brought his stack to the current average as the tournament nears the money.

Having an average stack getting near the money is only the secondary story for Roster, however. Having his leg amputated in April of this year and being told last month that he could have anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to live, Roster is here spreading the awareness of Sarcoma, the form of cancer that he was diagnosed with in 2017.

While he is here, there is no question he is enjoying every second of this opportunity.

Manig Loeser was a late entry to the tournament, having taken his seat at the completion of the dinner break. His tournament did not last long, however, with the German shoving all in for his last 10,500 with {a-Clubs}{5-Spades} and getting called by another player's {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}.

Loeser was drawing to a chop after a flop of {10-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{q-Hearts} and did not pick it up as the turn and river fell {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}.

Nível 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Ben Keeline
Ben Keeline

Ben Keeline was just gifted a stack by Frank Kassela who proclaimed that he hoped he would lose the hand so that he could go play today's $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. championship.

According to Keeline, Kassela raised from early position with {8-}{5-}-offsuit and Keeline called with {k-}{j-}. Kassela bet the remainder of his chips, which was around two-and-a-half times the size of the pot, on a flop of {j-}{8-}{3-} and Keeline now finds himself with a healthy stack.

Matt Affleck
Matt Affleck

Matt Affleck raised from middle position to 1,000 and was called by a player in the cutoff. The two went heads up to the {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop and Affleck made a continuation-bet of 1,500. His opponent raised to 3,500 and he thought about his decision for a few seconds before making the call. The turn was {9-Clubs} and Affleck checked to his opponent, who shoved all in for his remaining 13,000. Affleck snap-called and the two turned over their hands.

Matt Affleck: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}
Opponent: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Affleck's opponent had flopped a set but was in trouble on the turn as Affleck had improved to a straight. The river was {6-Spades} and Affleck collected the pot as his opponent collected his belongings and left the table.
