Cosmo Andoloro Among Leaders After Day 1 of the $500 Casino Employees Event

Nível 17 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Cosmo Andoloro
Cosmo Andoloro

The opening event of the 50th Annual World Series of Poker saw 686 entrants hit the felt in search of a coveted WSOP Bracelet, and after a long Day 1 that lasted over sixteen levels, the bubble burst and just 103 players were left, all in the money with a min-cash of $727 guaranteed, with their eye on the WSOP bracelet and $62,345 top prize.

One of the leaders in the tournament is Cosmo Andoloro, who managed to bag a healthy 650,000 in chips. He gained the majority of his stack by flopping a flush with {j-Clubs}{9-Clubs} against the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} of an opponent. Andoloro, a floor supervisor at Red Dragon Casino in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, scooped in the massive pot and never looked back.

Others to find a big bag include Planet Hollywood dealer Christopher Bowen (633,000), Thunder Valley Poker Room Manager Miguel Cardenas (512,000), Stephanie Otteson (479,000), and Talking Stick Poker Host Brad Helm (465,000). Joining them in Day 2 are WSOP Bracelet winner Jon Freidberg (360,000), Austin Roberts (342,000), who just finished in third place at the Run It Up Reno VIII Main Event, WSOP Poker Editor Isaac Hanson (249,000), and PokerNews Live Reporter Adam Lamers (116,000).

Likewise, multiple players from the DraftKings contingent that invaded the Rio made it through to Day 2, including Director of Community Team Steve McLoughlin (150,500), and Asad Abdullah (50,000), who McLoughlin shared with us has been playing poker for less than a year, and this was his first tournament cash. In addition, Abdullah got engaged on Saturday before making it down to the WSOP.

Not everyone was fortunate enough to make it through to Day 2. Some of those that hit the rail include former champion in this event Chad Holloway, a contingent from Team PokerNews including Yori Epskamp, Valerie Cross, Leo Contreras, Mo Nuwwarah, Milko van Winden, Oliver Biles, Brandyn Trenholm, and Kevin Mathers, DraftKings Senior Advisor and former WSOP Bracelet winner Jonathan Aguiar, last year's third-place finisher Katie Kopp, and three-time WSOP Bracelet winner Dutch Boyd.

Thursday's Day 2 will start at 12 noon, with all the remaining players in the money. The field will play down to the final six on Day 2, with those players returning on Friday at the same time to play down to a winner. All the action will be streamed on PokerGo on a 30-minute delay. Be sure to stay tuned right here on PokerNews to follow all the Day 2 action of the $500 Casino Employees Event!

Cross Tangles With Janiga

Nível 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

Valerie Cross

PokerNews Associate Editor Valerie Cross limped in on the button, and the small blind limped in as well. Brett Janiga, who runs the poker room at the Remington Bar and Casino in Whitefish, Montana, checked his option in the big blind.

Action checked over to Cross on a {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop, and she bet 5,500. Only Janiga called.

Both players checked the {q-Spades} turn, and Janiga bet 6,000 on the {5-Diamonds} river. Cross gave Janiga a wry grin before mucking.

"Show the seven!" the small blind told Janiga. "I don't have a seven!" Janiga said back with a smile.

Steve McLoughlin raised to 7,000 from under-the-gun, and was called by a player in middle position, the hijack, and Harrah's poker dealer Austin Roberts in the big blind.

Action checked to the hijack on a {4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} flop, and he bet 8,000. Roberts folded, and McLoughlin jammed for 54,500. The middle position player quickly folded, while the hijack paused for a few moments before tossing his hand to the muck as well.

Kevin Mathers was standing up with empty felt in front of his seat. He was kind enough to share the details of his bustout with us.

A player raised to 4,500 from middle position, and Mathers three-bet shoved for 19,900. His opponent called.

Kevin Mathers: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

DraftKings Data Science Engineer Sumanth Reddy Rounds Out the Squad

Nível 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Sumanth Reddy

The 50th Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) kicks off today with $500 buy-in Event #1: Casino Employees Event. The tournament is open to those who either work in casinos or in the gaming industry, and thanks to their sportsbook in New Jersey, DraftKings personnel are permitted to play.
They’ll be well represented in their first year of eligibility as a team of six players traveled from the East Coast to compete for the summer’s first bracelet. PokerNews caught up with each DraftKings employee – one of which is already a WSOP bracelet winner – talk about the opening event of the 2019 WSOP.

Sumanth Reddy
Age: 32
DraftKings Position: Data Science Engineer

Rounding out the DraftKings team is Sumanth Reddy, who graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in Economics.

“My very supportive family includes a younger sister and two parents who have long been horrified by my interest in poker,” he said. “Rightly so of course, because it’s a dumb luck game and I have no skill.”

He continued: “It’s debatable that I’ve ever truly learned to play poker. My first time looking at cards and throwing chips into a pot was in high school. It was at this time that I believed you should play any hand with a face card, and that it was truly possible to read a person’s soul. Additionally, in your heart, some select people could know the perfect, winning decision, in every single hand.”

Reddy has played the WSOP before where he says his claim to fame is successfully bluffing Phil Ivey.

“No one approved of how I played the hand in any way, but that’s not important,” he offered.

Like many others, Reddy thinks Asad is the DraftKings man to beat.

“He is easily one of the luckiest people I’ve ever met, shipping bad beat jackpots and winning on days that I don’t. He hasn’t been playing poker very long, so he will clearly be underestimated by his competition. This perfect storm of factors is why I believe he is the overwhelming favorite to win the entire tournament.”

A player limped in from under-the-gun, and Yori Epskamp raised to 4,000 next to act. A player in middle position called, as did the limper.

Action checked to Epskamp on an {a-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop, and Epskamp bet 3,500. Both of his opponents quickly folded, and Epskamp pantomimed a sigh of relief before turning over {q-Spades}{j-Hearts} for a bluff.

"Pocket fours were good!" said the middle position player.

"They were, but I was going to hit a queen!" Epskamp told his opponent.

DraftKings Director of Community Team Steve McLoughlin Returns to the Poker World

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Steve McLoughlin
Age: 49
DraftKings Position: Director of Community Team

Steve McLoughlin is no stranger to the WSOP and poker community; in fact, he’s been a part of the world since 2001. At 49 years old, he’s the oldest of the DraftKings crew and as he pointed out just a year away from eligibility for another WSOP tournament.

“Next year I qualify for the dreaded Seniors Event,” he said. “Seniors events should be 60+, I’m still too young.”

McLoughlin, who enjoys cooking and dining experiences, joined DraftKings a little over a year ago as Director of Community Team, which means he and his team lobby on behalf of player needs to enact positive change that benefit all players.

“Poker was the first peer-to-peer game that ever caught my attention, and the game that still captures a significant amount of my attention since 2001,” said McLoughlin, who was a featured player on Poker Night in America during its first three seasons. “I read everything that was available and discovered the early version of 2+2 where I encountered posts from many of the future greats who were up and coming. In these early days I encountered many peers such as Greg Raymer, Ed Miller, Tom Dwan, Andrew Robl, Shaun Deeb, and my co-worker at DraftKings Jon Aguiar. They all got their start on the 2+2 forum.”

Additionally, McLoughlin has worked in the poker industry after a career in music.

“Within the online gaming industry, I have held numerous roles including time in management at the Two Plus Two Forums and PokerTracker,” he said. “I started my career in the music business as a recording engineer, working on what seems like a third of all hip-hop records that were recorded in NYC in the early 90s.”

As for which team member he likes to go deep, McLoughlin is going with the software engineer.

“Asad is the player that impresses me the most. He is brand new to poker yet has learned so
quickly.”

Guerena's Aces Cracked By "Chapz"

A player called us over to tell us about a big hand that had happened a short time ago, and one of the players involved, Jose "Chapz" Zaragoza, a poker dealer at Players Casino in Ventura, California, was kind enough to fill us in on what had transpired.

A player raised to 2,200 from early position, and a middle position player called. Ben Guerena, a poker dealer at Pechanga Casino in California, three-bet to 7,000, and Zaragoza four-bet jammed for 42,200. Action folded back to Guerena, who called.

Ben Guerena: {a-}{a-}

Guerena's aces were cracked on a queen-high flop, and to add insult to injury, another queen fell on the turn, securing the double for Zaragoza with quad queens.

2013 Casino Employees Champ Holloway Gets a Lucky Double

Chad Holloway
Chad Holloway

A player opened in early position to 2,300, and Chad Holloway, who took down this event in 2013 for $84,915, three-bet shoved for 16,500. Action folded to his opponent, who tabled his hand without saying anything while reaching for chips.

"You folding?" Holloway said with a grin.

Chad Holloway: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}

Holloway had run into kings, but he found life on the {3-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop, giving him a flush draw. The {10-Clubs} turn added a few more outs for Holloway, and he made a flush on the {7-Diamonds} river to double.

"Jack and coke magic! How lucky do I get?" Holloway said, beaming after his double.
