Mesha James Bags Day 1 Chip Lead in Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship

Nível 10 : 400/800, 100 ante

Event #57: $10,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold’em Championship (with a $9,000 discount for women), drew a total of 696 entries. The bubble burst at the very end of the day. 104 ladies made the money for a min-cash worth $1,497 and are still in the run for the top prize of $130,230 and the WSOP gold after 10 levels of play.

The bubble lasted for over 40 minutes and Tiffany Michelle and Karen Xiyo busted at the same time to split for $748 each.

Several players were vying for the chip lead in the last couple levels of the night, but it was Mesha James who finished the day at the top with a stack of 130,200. James stayed with a comfortable stack for most of the day and grabbed the chip lead during the hand-for-hand stage, winning a massive pot with pocket eights. With $70,072 total in live tournaments earnings, James has locked up the third WSOP cash of her career and put herself in prime position for a deep run.

She is followed by other big stacks, such as Alexis Sterner (85,700) and Tara Snow (81,400). Some notables names made their way into Day 2 such Danielle Andersen (56,500), Lacey Jones (50,700), Melanie Weisner (47,000), Kristy Arnett (38,500) and Gaelle Baumann (37,000).

Heidi May, the reigning champion, was left with crumbs after an unfortunate hand after the beginning of the day. She managed to climb back a bit but got eliminated after the dinner break. Other familiar names were spotted in the field but didn’t find a bag at the end of the day. Among them, Jamie Kerstetter, Oanh Bui, Jennifer Shahade, Carol Fuchs, Ana Marquez, Samantha Abernathy, Sofia Lovgren, Muskan Sethi and Vivian Saliba.

The 104 remaining players will restart on Friday at noon local time to play ten more levels. There will be a 15 minutes break every two levels and a 60 minutes break after the sixth level (≈ 6:30 p.m.).

The PokerNews live reporting team will be providing coverage from the tournament floor until a winner is crowned on Saturday, so stay tuned for updates.

Bad Beat for Weisner

Nível 10 : 400/800, 100 ante
Melanie Weisner
Melanie Weisner

Melanie Weisner opened from the cutoff and Marcelina Iaquinto three-bet on the button. The action folded back to Weisner who four-bet and called the all-in shove from Iaquinto for a stack worth 27,000.

Weisner had the dominating hand, holding {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}, against {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for Iaquinto, but the {4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs} board gave the latter a straight and the double up.

Weisner slipped down to 17,000 after that hand as the bubble is approaching.

Double Up for Lacey Jones

Nível 8 : 250/500, 75 ante
Lacey Jones
Lacey Jones

The flop was reading {10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{9-Spades} when Lacey's Jones opponent first checked and raised all in after Jones made a bet, putting Jones tournament at risk. The latter quickly called with a stack of 21,400 to create the following showdown:

Lacey Jones: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Her opponent: {a-Spades}{2-Spades}

Jones's opponent had outs to win the hand, but the turn {10-Hearts} and river {8-Hearts} brought her no help and Jones doubled up to 43,000.

Arnett Gets Paid

Nível 7 : 200/400, 50 ante
Kristy Arnett
Kristy Arnett

The player in middle position opened to 900. Kristy Arnett, on the button, called. The small blind called. The big blind three-bet shoved for 1,700. The original raiser, Arnett, and the button made the call.

A flop of {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades} was dealt. The small blind and the original raiser checked. Arnett fired 2,300. The small blind folded. The original raiser called.

The turn brought the {9-Clubs}. The original raiser checked again. Arnett continued for 7,000. Her opponent check-called.

The {q-Diamonds} river filled up the board and was checked around. Arnett tabled {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} for a set. The big blind tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}. The original raiser mucked. Arnett raked in the pot, sending one of her opponents to the exit.

Saliba Eliminated

Nível 7 : 200/400, 50 ante
Vivian Saliba
Vivian Saliba

Vivian Saliba fell down to a short stack worth 5,825, moved all in from under the gun position, and Ishbel Leddy decided to reshove from the hijack. The other players folded to create the following showdown:

Vivian Saliba: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Ishbel Leddy: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}

It was a typical flip situation and the board {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{6-Spades} gave the winning hand to Leddy, who sent Saliba to the rail.

Wrong Start For the Defending Champion

Nível 1 : 25/50, 0 ante
Heidi May
Heidi May

It wasn't the very first hand at her table, but it was the first one 2017 WSOP Ladies Event winner Heidi May played today — and it was a big one.

In a blind-versus-blind situation, May in the big blind called a raise from April Facey in the small blind who had lost a few chips from her starting stack just prior to this hand. The flop came {4-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and May called another bet, this time for 1,000.

Things heated up on the turn {2-Clubs}, as Facey announced all in, putting May into a difficult decision. "Not on the first hand," said May, before she ended up calling with {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}.

Facey showed {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}, and after the {6-Diamonds} river brought no help to the defending champion, May fell down to 800 chips right after the tournament started.
