Brian Vollick Takes the Day 1 Chip Lead; 174 Progress

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Brian Vollick
Brian Vollick

Brian Vollick will lead the returning 174 players into Day 2 of Event #41: $1,500 Limit Hold'em after bagging up 71,500.

Vollick will be closely followed by WSOP ring winner Rex Clinkscales (69,900), Kurt Maier (68,200) and Jeremy Heartberg (66,200) when play gets underway at noon local time on Thursday, June 21.

A field of 596 players came together to create $804,600 prize pool, all with the aim of emulating last year's event winner Shane Buchwald.

This is one of three Limit Hold'em events that will take place during this year's series, and today ten 60-minute levels were played out as a host of notable names took their shot including bracelet winners Dutch Boyd, Andre Akkari, Mike Leah, Humberto Brenes, Phillip Hui, Michael Moore, Todd Witteles, Ryan Laplante, David 'ODB' Baker, David Bach, Chris Ferguson, Luis Calvo and 2008 WSOP Ladies Championship winner Svetlana Gromenkova.

However, of those names only Boyd (8,000), Bach (10,800) and Gromenkova (16,800) will return for Day 2.

A late entrant was six-time bracelet winner Daniel Negreanu, who won the 2004 and 2008 WSOP $2,000 Limit events. The Canadian lost a big pot in level 9 when his opponent turned a full house, and although he was able to make a small comeback, he ultimately was eliminated when Gromenkova's ace-high defeated his king-high before the end of the level.

Other familiar faces came and went as the action got underway including Marcel Luske and 2015 Main Event champion Joe McKeehen, who exited early after his ace-king was unable to beat Mike Lake's king-queen after the latter made two pair. Canadian professional Ari Engel, who boasts $5,820,708 in recorded live tournament cashes, was eliminated just before the dinner break at the end of level 6. Engel got his last bet in on the flop with pocket-nines and found he was behind to a Chip Jett's paired king. Alex Keating also had a brief stay after joining in level eight but didn't last the level after running into Rex Clinkscales' flush.

When the play resumes the limits will be 1,000-2,000 and the returning 174 will battle through another ten 60-minute levels in a bid to build a stack for Day 3 and a shot at the gold bracelet.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for more coverage from this event, and every event during this summer's World Series of Poker.

Negreanu's Amazing Come Back and Fall

Nível 9 : 600/1,200, 0 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

On the first hand, Daniel Negreanu with only 100 left, was all-in after the first bet. The button player raised and Chip Jett in the small blind made the call as did the player on the button. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{6-Spades} and after a check from the player in the small blind and Jett, the player on the button player bet and Jett was the only live caller.

The turn brought a {j-Spades} and Jett called another bet. Both active players checked on the {5-Diamonds} river and Jett tabled {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to win the pot. Negreanu revealed {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for a trip jacks with the best kicker and quintupled to 500 chips.

The hand right after, Negreanu was all-in one more time with two other players active in the hand. Both checked on the {a-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop and there was a bet and a call on the {2-Diamonds} turn and {q-Diamonds} river. The first player tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} while the other one mucked, and Negreanu revealed the best hand one more time, holding {10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} to climb up to 2,200.

However, his come back took ended against Svetlana Gromenkova. The Canadian player bet under the gun and the action folded to Gromenkova in big blind who raised. Negreanu eventually called and moved all in on the {3-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Spades} flop after Gromenkova continuation bet.

Daniel Negreanu: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Svetlana Gromenkova: {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Negreanu was in bad shape and the turn and river didn't change anything and the six-time bracelet winner was out of the tournament.

Bardah Felted on the River

Nível 7 : 400/800, 0 ante
Ronnie Bardah
Ronnie Bardah

Ronnie Bardah raised from under the gun and was called by the player in the big blind.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} and Bardah called his opponent's lead. Both players checked on the {j-Clubs} turn. The river came {9-Clubs} and the small blind player check-called Bardah's bet, revealing {q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} for two pair. Bardah looked one more time at his cards, and quickly showed {j-}{10-} before mucking his hand.

Bardah was left with crumbs after this hand and was all in from the big blind position against the small blind player. With {9-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, Bardah had the dominated hand, facing his opponent's {j-Spades}{9-Spades}, and the board ran out {10-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} to send him to the rail.

Phakousonh Takes Out Akkari

Nível 7 : 400/800, 0 ante
Andre Akkari
Andre Akkari

Andre Akkari was down to 550 but was able to double-up with the nut flush holding {a-Spades}{9-Spades} to give him some hope, but just a few hands later he was heading for the exit.

Akkari raised and was three-bet by Phanatda Phakousonh, which was enough to put the Brazilian all-in. Akkari made the call, and he needed help from the board.

Phanatda Phakousonh: {k-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Andre Akkari: {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}

Board: {5-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}

Akkari was unable to improve his queen-high and was the next elimination from the event.

Engel Eliminated by Jett

Nível 6 : 300/600, 0 ante
Ari Engel
Ari Engel

There were three players in the pot on a board that read {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} when Ari Engel moved all in for his last bet and was called by Chip Jett before their other opponent folded.

Ari Engel: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Chip Jett: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

River: {5-Clubs}

Jett was in front with a pair of kings, and Engel stood up from his chair and collected his belongings before the river was even dealt, and he departed when the five-of-clubs sealed his fate.
