Defending Champ Monnette Still in the $10K 2-7 NL Draw Mix with Hall on Top

John Monnette
John Monnette

The field will be significantly narrowed this afternoon as Day 2 of Event #23: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship sees 38 players return with defending champion John Monnette and former champions Paul Volpe, Jesse Martin, and Nick Schulman all still in the hunt.

The action will resume at 2 p.m. with late registration remaining open until that time. A number of Day 1 casualties still have another bullet to fire and the likes of Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, and Phil Hellmuth have yet to make an appearance.

Galen Hall starts the day off at the top of the counts bringing forth a stack of 389,800. Benny Glaser ended Day 1 second-best with 352,000 while Timothy McDermott (304,800), Stephen Chidwick (222,800), and Dario Sammartino (212,500) round out the top five.

German professional soccer player Max Kruse cruised through Day 1, spending a lot of the day near the top of the counts. The former $1,500 NL 2-7 Single Draw finalist saw his stack dwindle through the latter stages but returns to Day 2 with 72,800.

Monnette (90,000), along with multiple bracelet-winners Mike Wattel (135,500), John Hennigan (135,100), Billy Baxter (94,000), Volpe (128,300), Schulman (105,800), Erik Seidel (91,800), Chris Ferguson (85,500), Martin (75,800), Eli Elezra (51,400), and Shaun Deeb (30,100) will look to add to their legend with a strong run on Day 2.

Other notables that will hit the felt this afternoon include Scott Seiver (142,600), Jean-Robert Bellande (100,800), Darren Elias (70,600), and Illya Trincher (42,200).

Play kicks off in Level 11 with blinds at 1,500/3,000 with an ante of 700. Day 2 is scheduled to play ten 60-minute levels separated by a 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day.

Keep it locked to the blog as PokerNews will be on the floor providing live coverage until the last card comes off the deck and the latest WSOP champion is crowned.

Doyle Brunson

Daniel Zack opened to 8,000 under the gun only to see Doyle Brunson three-bet shove from the cutoff for the tune of 34,600. That cleared the rest of the table and Zack made the call to put the poker legend at risk.

Zack drew one and Brunson hummed for just a few seconds, deciding a queen was strong enough and stood pat, tabling a {q-}{9-}{8-}{7-}{4-}.

Zack turned over a {7-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and peeled a {7-}. Brunson was awarded the pot.

Zlotnik Eliminates Chen and Doubles Through Bellande

Nível 11 : 1,500/3,000, 700 ante
James Chen
James Chen

James Chen moved all in from under the gun for 22,600. Mikhail Zlotnik flat-called and Jean-Robert Bellande three-bet to 45,000. It folded back to Zlotnik who moved all in.

"You wanted me to jam over the top," said Bellande before calling.

Chen took his time before opting to draw two. Zlotnik stood pat, while Bellande announced he was "making a play" and drew one showing a {10-}

James Chen: {8-}{7-}{2-}
Mikhail Zlotnik: {8-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{2-}
Jean-Robert Bellande: {9-}{4-}{3-}{2-}

"I'm dead," said Bellande, drawing a four to pair. Chen turned over a {6-} and a {4-} to make his eight, but lose out to the eight-seven-four of Zlotnik.

Shawn Sheikhan opened to 11,100 and Dario Sammartino three-bet to 36,000. James Obst then four-bet all in for 169,000.

"I wish I had it," said Sheikhan, before folding. Sammartino called and then stood pat. Obst drew one.

Sammartino showed {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} for a pat seven, and Obst was still alive with {7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. He would need to make a wheel to stay alive, but could only draw a {10-} and was eliminated.
