From 27 to the November Nine; Martin Jacobson Leads to Start Day 7

Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

Welcome back to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and the 2014 World Series of Poker for Day 7 of the Main Event, the final day until the November Nine return in 119 days to play down until we have a new World Champion!

After nine days of grueling and intense tournament poker, the 6,683-player field — the third largest of all time — has now been reduced to just a final 27 who will all have their eyes on reaching the elusive November Nine and a guaranteed $730,725 payday.

Sweden's Martin Jacobson has been trending his chip count upwards ever since he bagged the Day 1a chip lead. On Day 2a/b he ended in 21st, on Day 3 he sat 29th and Day 4 he rose to 18th before finishing Day 5 in 14th overall. Today will see him return on top after bagging a very impressive 22,335,000 in chips — good for a 47-big-blind lead against the next best. That next best, however, isn't one to ignore as it is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Luis Velador who bagged 16,600,000 in chips to end slightly ahead of Dan Sindelar (16,345,000), Andoni Larrabe (15,280,000), and nine-time World Foosball Champion William Pappaconstantinou (14,640,000).

Several players remaining are very accustomed to the pressure associated with a deep Main Event run, and no one can look past Mark Newhouse who is on the verge of making one of the greatest runs in Main Event history. Newhouse rode a roller coaster of a Day 7 in 2013 after starting the day 15th in chips before reaching the November Nine second-to-last in chips before eventually exiting in 9th. This year he starts the day 11th in chips, and if he can go back-to-back in reaching the November Nine, he will be the first player to do so since Dan Harrington in 2003 and 2004. This basically means that over the past two years, Newhouse has already outlasted 12,999 Main Event players heading into today.

Like Newhouse, several other players still alive know what a deep run in the Main Event feels like. In 2011, Bryan Devonshire finished 12th for $607,882 while Leif Force collected a massive $1,154,527 in 2006 for his 11th-place finish. In total, 10 of the remaining players have reached the money in the Main Event, with Force making the fourth Main Event cash of his career.

Although only a few WSOP bracelet winners remain, the field is still incredibly strong with Dan Smith (10,335,000) looking to add to his plethora of titles that include a win in the Bellagio $100K Summer Super High Roller a few weeks ago, an Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge victory, and WPT and HPT titles. Russian Andrey Zaichenko has a couple of WSOP final tables from his 22 WSOP cashes but the current guaranteed payout of $286,900 is his biggest to date. Dutch players Jorryt van Hoof and Oscar Kemps are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Michiel Brummelhuis who took 7th last year, while perennial nice guy Eddy Sabat will hope his 19th WSOP cash turns into his fourth final table and first WSOP bracelet.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be providing hand-for-hand extensive live updates of all the Day 7 action once play resumes at 12:00 p.m. (PDT), so make sure to stay tuned right here to PokerNews.com as we write the next exciting chapter of the 2014 WSOP Main Event story.

While waiting for the action to begin, take a look at yesterday's Chad Brown Memorial & Charity Poker Tournament that took place at Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel where many from the poker world got together for a good cause and to remember a dear friend:

Sean Dempsey Eliminated in 27th Place ($286,900)

Nível 30 : 60,000/120,000, 15,000 ante
Sean Dempsey
Sean Dempsey

Feature Table

Hand #5: Mark Newhouse raised to 240,000 under the gun and Sean Dempsey called from the big blind to see the {6-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{q-Hearts} flop. Dempsey checked and then called when Newhouse bet 260,000, which brought about the {5-Spades} on the turn.

Both players checked, the {J-Hearts} completed the board on the river, and Dempsey led out for 550,000. Newhouse responded by raising to 2.8 million total, and Dempsey called off his remaining chips. Newhouse tabled the {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a flush, and it was good as Dempsey mucked. It wasn't immediately clear that Dempsey was all in, so the dealer had pulled his cards into the muck before they could be exposed, as they should have been in an all-in situation.

Dempsey exited the feature table to a nice round of applause and will take home $286,900 for his 27th-place finish. Dempsey added this score to his already-successful summer, as he won Event #39: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em for $548,460.

Table 2 Hands #4-5: Palmer Triples on River

Nível 30 : 60,000/120,000, 15,000 ante
Scott Palmer

Hand #4: From the button, William Tonking opened for a min-raise to 240,000 and Maximilian Senft called from the big blind to see a {6-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} flop.

Senft checked and Tonking bet out 300,000 which was enough for him to collect the pot.

Hand #5: From under the gun, Dan Smith opened to 270,000 and Scott Palmer moved all in for 685,000 from the next seat over. With the action on William Pappaconstantinou a few seats over, he called along with Smith.

The dealer spread a {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{K-Clubs} flop and both active players checked. The turn brought the {6-Hearts} and Smith bet 750,000. Pappaconstantinou folded and the remaining players' cards were tabled.

Smith: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}
Palmer: {A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

With Palmer in bad shape and needing to spike an ace to stay alive, the dealer delivered the {A-Hearts} on the river to grant Palmer's wish of a much needed triple to 2.37 million.

Feature Table

Hand #9: Brian Roberts shoved all in under the gun for 1.235 million. Eddy Sabat called from the hijack, and Politano took a couple of minutes before deciding to lay it down on the button. The blinds folded as well.

Sabat: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Roberts: {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

The {7-Clubs}{a-Spades}{10-Clubs} flop gave Sabat top pair and Roberts a gutshot. The {7-Hearts} turn was no help to Roberts, and the {a-Hearts} river gave Sabat a full house, eliminating the player known as "flawless_victory" online.

Level 30 Concludes; Two Eliminations Before First Break of the Day

Nível 30 : 60,000/120,000, 15,000 ante
Sean Dempsey
Sean Dempsey

Only 44 minutes have elapsed on Day 7, but we find ourself on our first break at the conclusion of Level 30. The field of 27 is now 25 with the eliminations of Sean Dempsey (27th) and Brian Roberts (26th).

Dempsey bet-called all in on a completed board, then mucked when Mark Newhouse, a 2013 November Niner, showed a flush. Then Roberts found himself all in and at risk with {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} against the {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} of Eddy Sabat, and failed to improve despite flopping an open-ended Broadway draw.

Martin Jacobson remains the chip leader and the only player with over 20 million chips.

Play will resume in roughly 10 minutes.

Check out a quick Update with Remko and Sarah.

Table 3 Hands #23-26: Big Double-Up For Sarra Jr

Thomas Sarra Jr

Hand #23: Leif Force raised from the hijack to 350,000 and Dan Sindelar called from the big blind. The flop came down {9-Spades}{K-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and Sindelar check-folded when Force bet 350,000.

Hand #24: Andoni Larrabe raised to 325,000 from early position and both blinds called. The flop came down {A-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and the action was checked to Larrabe who bet 375,000. Dan Sindelar check-raised to 925,000, Iaron Lightbourne folded and Larrabe made the call.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and both players checked. On the river, the {J-Spades}, Sindelar bet 1,925,000 and Larrabe quickly folded his cards.

Hand #25: Thomas Sarra Jr raised to 350,000 from the cutoff and he took down this pot.

Hand #26: Sarra raised to 355,000 from the hijack and the action folded to Andoni Larrabe in the big blind. "How much do you have?" Larrabe asked Sarra, who responded he had a little over four million.

"All in," Larrabe then announced.

"All in?" Sarra questioned his opponent. "That's a big bet, a very big bet. I need to think about this one," Sarra continued.

After a brief pause Sarra continued thinking out loud and said, "That's a really big bet, why would you do that?"

Another 10 seconds went by and then Sarra called.

Sarra: {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Larrabe: {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

"Y'all are crazy!" Leif Force yelled in excitement.

"Holy s***!" Oscar Kemps added.

Everyone at the table started laughing, but Sarra was indeed all in for his tournament life.

The board ran out {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Sarra found himself a very big double-up.

"Grande cojones!" Kemps yelled as Sarra raked in this big, "Big hairy balls!" the Dutchman continued as Larrabe shook his head in disbelief. The Spaniard who started the day with a very big stack is now among the shorter ones at this table.

Hand #27: Oscar Kemps opened to 340,000 from early position only to have Iaron Lightbourne three-bet the action to 875,000. Action folded back to Kemps who folded as well.

Hand #28: Thomas Sarra Jr raised to 350,000 from early position and found calls from Yorane Kerignard in the cutoff and Christopher Greaves in the big blind. The flop came down {5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{8-Spades} and Greaves checked. Sarra continued for 460,000 and Kerignard called. Greaves got out of the way, allowing the {4-Diamonds} to hit the turn. Sarra checked, Kerignard fired 505,000 and Sarra instantly announced an all-in raise. Kerignard threw his hands up in the air and then instantly mucked his cards.

Hand #29: Dan Sindelar opened to 350,000 from early position and it folded to Leif Force on the button. He cut out a three-bet to 800,000 and it came back to Sindelar who called. The flop was {7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and Sindelar check-called a continuation bet of 675,000 from Force.

The turn was the {J-Hearts} and Sindelar checked for a second time. Force fired one million and Sindelar called once more. The {6-Hearts} hit the river and Sindelar checked a final time. Force thought for a moment before moving 1.6 million forward. Sindelar replied by shipping all in and suddenly Force was thinking for his tournament life. He clenched his fist and then flicked his cards into the muck. Sindelar picked up the pot.

Nível 31 : 80,000/160,000, 20,000 ante
Bryan Devonshire - 25th place

Table 2

Hand #34: From the button, Bryan Devonshire opened to 320,000 and Scott Palmer called in the big blind.

Both players checked the {3-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop. The {9-Spades} landed on the turn and Palmer led for 410,000. Devonshire folded, and Palmer scooped the pot.

Hand #35: The action folded to Maximilian Senft in the hijack, and he opened with a min-raise to 320,000. Next to act, Bryan Devonshire announced he was all in for 2,695,000, and after the blinds folded the action was back on Senft. After close to two minutes of deliberating, Senft made the call to put Devonshire at risk.

Senft: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Devonshire: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

With Devonshire racing to stay alive, the {K-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{A-Hearts} flop paired Senft's ace to put him well in front. The {Q-Clubs} then landed on the turn, and Devonshire was looking for a jack to make a saving straight.

Unfortunately for the 2011 WSOP Main Event 12th-place finisher, the river brought the {6-Spades} and Devonshire headed to the rail in 25th place for a $286,900 payday while Senft climbed to 7.3 million in chips.

Hand #33: A ação segue em fold até ao botão e Bruno Politano aposta 350,000. Desta vez o small blind deu raise de volta para 775,000 fichas. Bruno dá 4 bet para 1,2 milhões e Keranen vai all in.

Keranen: {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Politano: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Vamooo!!
