Politano Stretches Lead in Level 23; Newhouse Barrels into Contention

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Mark Newhouse
Mark Newhouse

Another two hours, but more of the same story after Level 23 of the Main Event. Bruno Politano continued his dominion over the top spot in the chip counts, increasing his stack to more than 6 million.

Nobody else is within a stone’s throw of that mark, but there is a Mark surging up the counts: Mark Newhouse, who was the first to fall during last year’s November Nine for just over $733,000, rocketed up the leaderboard with an extremely productive two hours. He entered the dinner break with just over 3 million and now finds himself hovering around 5 million. His aggression got Chris Johnson off a hand where Johnson made hefty bets on the turn and river before folding to a huge river shove.

As for Politano, his hot run continued with a big win in a race against Adam Coats.

Maria Ho and Mikiyo Aoki are providing the tournament with some feminine flair. Aoki has grinded her stack to north of 2.5 million, while Ho reached a peak of about 2.7 million before faltering a bit to 2.1 million. In a recent pot, she snapped off a three-bet shove with kings to bust Michael Palo.

Vincent Maglio (138th), Alex Outhred (140th), and Huy Nguyen (142nd) were among the fallen this past level.

Joas Mudde
Joas Mudde

Marius Pospiech raised from the cutoff to 70,000 and Dutchman Joas Mudde moved all in for his final 170,000 chips from the button. Both blinds folded and Pospiech made the call.

Mudde: {A-Spades}{9-Spades}
Pospiech: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{6-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Mudde hit the rail. Mudde's 119th place finish in this year's World Series of Poker Main Event marks his second ever live tournament cash, his first being a 551th place in the 2009 WSOP Main Event.

David Tuthill
David Tuthill

We arrived in time to find David Tuthill all in and at risk before the flop against Manig Loeser. Tuthill was all in for his last 560,000 and in a dominating position heading to the community cards.

Tuthill: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Loeser: {A-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

The board ran out {5-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, ensuring Tuthill would score the double. Tuthill, who was down as low as 35,000 after the dinner break, now sits at 1.27 million in chips. Loeser, on the other hand, has dropped to 500,000.

Smith Eliminates Kalas to Reach 5.45 Million

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

We caught up with the board showing {9-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{A-Hearts} and Kane Kalas placed out a bet worth 395,000. Dan Smith moved all in for 1,670,000 effective, and Kalas thought it over for about a minute before announcing a call. He was already drawing dead.

Smith: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Kalas: {Q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The {9-Spades} on the river added insult to injury, giving Kalas nines full of queens to Smith's queens full of nines. Kalas exited the ESPN stage, and Smith began stacking a mountain of chips.

Big Four-Way All-In Pot Results in Two Eliminations

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Darlene Lee
Darlene Lee

A big four-way all-in hand just took place over at Table 377 that resulted in two eliminations.

The hand began when William Pappaconstantinou moved all in under the gun for 425,000 and Darelene Lee called off for 280,000 from middle position. Nicholas Nardello then flatted from the cutoff only to have Justin Swilling move all in over the top for 775,000 from the small blind. Nardello ended up making the call and a huge crowd gathered round to see what inspired such action.

Pappaconstantinou: {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}
Lee: {a-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Swilling: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Nardello: {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Shouts for various cards began to emerge from the respective supporters on the rail. Nardello not only had everyone covered, he also had the best hand. That changed though when the {10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop delivered Pappaconstantinou a set of fours.

The {8-Clubs} turn gave both Nardello and Lee an open-ended straight draw, while Swilling was still competing for the side pot with his overs. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {9-Spades}, which changed nothing. Pappaconstantinou took down the sizable main pot while Nardello took the side, though he still lost a little on the hand.

Lee and Swilling were eliminated in 113th and 112th place, both for $52,141.

Palmer Takes Huge Chunk From Aoki

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Scott Palmer
Scott Palmer

We arrived at the table to find a sizable pot brewing between Mikiyo Aoki and Scott Palmer on a board of {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Aoki checked the turn over to Palmer on the button. He came out with a bet of 375,000 and Aoki called to see the final card.

The {2-Spades} dropped down on fifth street and Aoki came out swinging for what looked to be 400,000. Palmer replied by moving all in, prompting a quick fold from Aoki. With this hit, she's down to about 1.235 million. Palmer, on the other hand, has soared to 5.95 million in chips.

Johnson Deals Aguiar Fatal Blow

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Jonathan Aguiar busted out.
Jonathan Aguiar busted out.

Jonathan "FatalError" Aguiar shoved all in for about 420,000 in middle position, and players quickly folded until action was on Chris Johnson, who called from the big blind.

Johnson: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Aguiar: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

One of the players asked for an ace and two diamonds for a nice sweat. Instead it was a sweat of a different sort: {j-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}, giving Aguiar an open-ended straight draw and an overcard. A diamond would make things even more sweaty, and the dealer delivered one with the {2-Diamonds}.

Johnson had to be having flashbacks to last year's main event, when Jackie Glazier flushed him out on the river with {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, but this year Johnson got the brick he needed with the {6-Spades}, eliminating Aguiar and recouping some of the chips he recently bled away.

Mukul Pahuja - Eliminated
Mukul Pahuja - Eliminated

Mukul Pahuja opened from early position to 60,000, Zachary Hirst called on the button and the flop came down {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Pahuja continued for 65,000, Hirst raised to 235,000, Pahuja reraised all in for 1.51 million and Hirst called.

Pahuja: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Hirst: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Pahuja was in dire straits and found no help from the {9-Hearts} turn or {2-Clubs} river. The stacks were counted down and Hirst had Pahuja covered by a mere 50,000.

Keranen Gets the Last Laugh

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Curtis Rystadt - Eliminated
Curtis Rystadt - Eliminated

According to Ty Stewart and others, Kyle Keranen and Curtis Rystadt were getting into it with one another over at the Feature Table earlier in the day. ESPN's Andrew Feldman wrote that Keranen actually talked to the tournament staff about Rystadt's trash talking.

Their table was recently moved to the secondary feature section in the middle of the Amazon Room, where the two would play a four million-chip pot.

Rystadt checked to Keranen on a board of {k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}, and he tossed out a bet of what looked like 125,000. Rystadt check-raised to 400,000, pushing out two large towers of orange T5,000 chips, and Keranen made the call.

The {4-Hearts} completed the board, Rystadt bet an identical 400,000, and Keranen went into the tank.

"All in," he said suddenly, moving in for effectively 1.5 million.

Rystadt went deep into the tank, saying that he thought Keranen has the {a-Clubs} in his hand. He also repeated the world "Hollywood" a few times.

"What are the blinds going to be next level?" Rystadt asked the dealer, wanting to know how many big blinds he would have if he folded. "I'll still have over a million chips."

Rystadt's tank lasted over five minutes before he finally called, and Keranen ripped over {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the stone-cold nuts. Rystadt tried to muck, but per WSOP rules the dealer was forced to expose his hand: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}.

Keranen, who finished as the chip leader on Day 5 of the 2012 WSOP Main Event, rocketed up to 5.9 million chips, while Rystadt hit the rail.

Newhouse Grabs Lead; Pahuja Eliminated During Level 24

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Mark Newhouse
Mark Newhouse

The final 20-minute break of the night has commenced.

Bruno Politano’s long reign at the top of the chip counts has finally ended, as he’s slipped to fifth during the past level, being overtaken by Mark Newhouse (7.2 million), Kyle Keranen (6.2 million), Scott Palmer (6.1 million), and Tony Ruberto (5.45 million). Politano still has plenty of chips with about 5.2 million.

Keranen had gotten into a rivalry with Curtis Rystadt, but took the role of big brother as he busted Stewart in a monster pot of over 4 million with the nut flush. Apparently, Keranen had gotten so fed up with Rystadt’s trash talk that he had complained to the floor. The knockout had to be sweet for him.

Scott Palmer dragged a huge pot from Mikiyo Aoki on his way to a top stack.

Mukul Pahuja, one of the hottest tournament players in the world, saw his deep run end during the level. On a flop of {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, he had {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for aces up only to run into the {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} of Zachary Hirst. Pahuja was unable to find a third six and hit the rail in 101.

Other notables seeing deep runs come to a disappointing end included Simon Charette (103rd), Jonathan Aguiar (105th), Manig Loeser (107th), Farid Jattin (109th), Vladimir Shchemelev (114th), Byron Kaverman (123rd), and Timothy Reilly (125th).
