Newhouse Primed for a Run at Two Straight; Ho Final Woman Again

Nível 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Mark Newhouse has been here before.
Mark Newhouse has been here before.

At the conclusion of the longest day played yet in the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event, 79 players bagged up their chips and wrote down their names before marching out the doors of the Amazon Room. An extra hour was added to play to make up for the shortened Day 3 and Day 4, and it provided much added excitement.

The man at the top of the chip counts is a person who will be familiar to anyone who tuned in to the 2013 WSOP coverage; Mark Newhouse entered the November Nine last year with a short stack of 7.3 million, good for eighth place. Evidence of how dominant his Day 5 was, he actually has more chips now than he took into last year’s final table, with 7.4 million.

Perhaps having been there before has helped solidify in Newhouse the fearless mentality needed to conquer huge tournament fields, as his aggression was on display throughout the day, putting people to the test for stacks seemingly every time he played a pot. Known as "Newhizzle" in his online heyday, he has more than $2.7 million in live tournament cashes but is undoubtedly hungry to add $10 million to that after getting a small taste of the biggest stage in poker last year.

On the final break of the day, which occurred an hour before play ended, Remko Rinkema chatted with Newhouse about having the chip lead and comparing his run to last year:

Newhouse has plenty of tough company in the top 10. Players chasing him include Kyle Keranen (6.67 million), Scott Palmer (6.595 million), Bruno Politano (5.475 million), Dan Smith (5.36 million), Dan Sindelar (5.24 million), Tony Ruberto (5.235 million), Iaron Lightbourne (4.975 million), Leif Force (4.745 million), and Craig McCorkell (4.355 million).

Several other notable players didn’t crack the top 10, but still lurk with a bag of chips and a dream. That batch includes Martin Jacobson (3.925 million), Bryan Devonshire (3.83 million), Andrey Zaichenko (3.565 million), Matt Waxman (3.125 million), Isaac Baron (3 million), and Brian Hastings (2.945 million).

Maria Ho, meanwhile, outlasted every other woman who entered the tournament, and she will continue to Day 6 with a short stack of 435,000. Impressively, Ho pulled off the same feat in 2007, when she cashed 38th for $237,865. She’s an accomplished tournament player who has tallied more than $1.5 million in live winnings, but Day 6 will see the obstacles stacked high in her path.

Nevertheless, Ho is excited for things to come and talked with Rinkema on the chase to better her 38th-place finish from 2007:

A total of 291 runners entered the day with high hopes, but the majority of them left the arena with broken hearts and fatter wallets at some point during the 14-hour grind. One by one, Mike Sowers (286th), John Monnette (272nd), last year’s bubble boy Farzad Bonyadi (238th), Jared Bleznick (217th), Kevin Eyster (204th), Jeff Madsen (188th), Brian Townsend (170th), Byron Kaverman (123rd), Jonathan Aguiar (105th), Mukul Pahuja (101st), and Griffin Benger (90th) saw deep runs come to an end.

Dozens more will join them on the payout list on Sunday, as Day 6 will commence at 12 p.m. local time here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be on hand to deliver all of the action, so be sure to return and don’t miss a single key hand as the November Nine draws closer.

Sabat Eliminates Aoki; Maria Ho Last Woman Standing

Nível 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Mikiyo Aoki
Mikiyo Aoki

There was a flurry of action in the last hand of the night over at Table 378. It was there that Mikiyo Aoki, who finished runner-up in this year's Ladies Event, got her stack of 1.025 million all in preflop against Eddy Sabat, who had her covered by just 60,000.

Aoki: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Sabat: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

Aoki, one of only two women remaining in the field, was in a bad spot and in desperate need of a ten. The {j-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop didn't contain one, and the {3-Diamonds} turn wasn't one either. Aoki had just two outs headed to the river, neither of which came as the {6-Clubs} blanked instead.

Aoki's elimination in 83rd place means that Maria Ho, who is sitting on a short stack, is the last woman standing. Ho was the last woman standing in the 2007 WSOP Main Event where she ultimately finished in 38th place. Only time will tell where she finishes in this tournament, but she has officially captured the "Last Woman Standing" title for the second time in the last eight Main Events.

Sindelar Busts Taylor in Four Million-Chip Pot

Lee Taylor - Eliminated
Lee Taylor - Eliminated

After a series of preflop raises, Lee Taylor was all in and at risk for roughly two million chips holding {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. Unfortunately for him, Dan Sindelar had him crushed with {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}.

The pocket aces held as the board rolled out {2-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{j-Hearts}, and Taylor was eliminated. Sindelar climbed to 5.45 million chips.

Eveslage Gets the Last of Benger's Chips

Nível 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Griffin Benger
Griffin Benger

Griffin Benger was the chip leader early on Day 5, but things went south for the online superstar as soon as he sat down at the ESPN Feature Table. On his final hand, Benger opened to 85,000 from middle position and Chad Eveslage repopped him to 190,000 from the button. Benger moved all in for 1,105,000 and Eveslage snapped him off.

Benger: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}
Eveslage: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

It got worse quickly for Benger on the {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{5-Hearts} flop, giving Eveslage middle set. Benger stood up to see the {K-Diamonds} on the turn leave him drawing dead, and the {9-Hearts} completed the board to send him to the rail.

McCorkell KOs Kuntz

Marcia Kuntz

Michael Aron opened to 80,000 and Marcia Kuntz moved all in from the hijack for 1,035,000. With the action on Craig McCorkell, he moved all in and Aron quickly folded.

Kuntz: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
McCorkell: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

With Kuntz dominated, the {5-Clubs}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs} board would ensure Kuntz hit the rail to leave just two females remaining; Maria Ho and Mikiyo Aoki.

Greer's Big Slick Sends Olsson to the Rail

Nível 25 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Emil Olsson in earlier WSOP action.
Emil Olsson in earlier WSOP action.

After shoving the hand before and swiping the blinds and antes, an under-the-gun Emil Olsson moved all in for a second time for 475,000. This time Garrett Greer called him from the cutoff, and after the button and blinds all folded, the cards were turned on their backs.

Greer: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Olsson: {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Olsson had some major kicker issues, and things didn't look too good on the {6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Diamonds} flop. "Chop outs," Greer pointed out when the {6-Hearts} paired the board on the turn, which inspired the slightest of smiles from Olsson. The dealer burned on last time and put out the {6-Diamonds} on the river. The card failed to help Olsson and his 2014 WSOP Main Event came to an end in the last level of Day 5.

Newhouse Grabs Lead; Pahuja Eliminated During Level 24

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Mark Newhouse
Mark Newhouse

The final 20-minute break of the night has commenced.

Bruno Politano’s long reign at the top of the chip counts has finally ended, as he’s slipped to fifth during the past level, being overtaken by Mark Newhouse (7.2 million), Kyle Keranen (6.2 million), Scott Palmer (6.1 million), and Tony Ruberto (5.45 million). Politano still has plenty of chips with about 5.2 million.

Keranen had gotten into a rivalry with Curtis Rystadt, but took the role of big brother as he busted Stewart in a monster pot of over 4 million with the nut flush. Apparently, Keranen had gotten so fed up with Rystadt’s trash talk that he had complained to the floor. The knockout had to be sweet for him.

Scott Palmer dragged a huge pot from Mikiyo Aoki on his way to a top stack.

Mukul Pahuja, one of the hottest tournament players in the world, saw his deep run end during the level. On a flop of {a-Spades}{q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, he had {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for aces up only to run into the {a-Hearts}{q-Spades} of Zachary Hirst. Pahuja was unable to find a third six and hit the rail in 101.

Other notables seeing deep runs come to a disappointing end included Simon Charette (103rd), Jonathan Aguiar (105th), Manig Loeser (107th), Farid Jattin (109th), Vladimir Shchemelev (114th), Byron Kaverman (123rd), and Timothy Reilly (125th).

Keranen Gets the Last Laugh

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Curtis Rystadt - Eliminated
Curtis Rystadt - Eliminated

According to Ty Stewart and others, Kyle Keranen and Curtis Rystadt were getting into it with one another over at the Feature Table earlier in the day. ESPN's Andrew Feldman wrote that Keranen actually talked to the tournament staff about Rystadt's trash talking.

Their table was recently moved to the secondary feature section in the middle of the Amazon Room, where the two would play a four million-chip pot.

Rystadt checked to Keranen on a board of {k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}, and he tossed out a bet of what looked like 125,000. Rystadt check-raised to 400,000, pushing out two large towers of orange T5,000 chips, and Keranen made the call.

The {4-Hearts} completed the board, Rystadt bet an identical 400,000, and Keranen went into the tank.

"All in," he said suddenly, moving in for effectively 1.5 million.

Rystadt went deep into the tank, saying that he thought Keranen has the {a-Clubs} in his hand. He also repeated the world "Hollywood" a few times.

"What are the blinds going to be next level?" Rystadt asked the dealer, wanting to know how many big blinds he would have if he folded. "I'll still have over a million chips."

Rystadt's tank lasted over five minutes before he finally called, and Keranen ripped over {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for the stone-cold nuts. Rystadt tried to muck, but per WSOP rules the dealer was forced to expose his hand: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}.

Keranen, who finished as the chip leader on Day 5 of the 2012 WSOP Main Event, rocketed up to 5.9 million chips, while Rystadt hit the rail.

Mukul Pahuja opened from early position to 60,000, Zachary Hirst called on the button and the flop came down {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Pahuja continued for 65,000, Hirst raised to 235,000, Pahuja reraised all in for 1.51 million and Hirst called.

Pahuja: {A-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Hirst: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

Pahuja was in dire straits and found no help from the {9-Hearts} turn or {2-Clubs} river. The stacks were counted down and Hirst had Pahuja covered by a mere 50,000.

Johnson Deals Aguiar Fatal Blow

Nível 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Jonathan Aguiar busted out.
Jonathan Aguiar busted out.

Jonathan "FatalError" Aguiar shoved all in for about 420,000 in middle position, and players quickly folded until action was on Chris Johnson, who called from the big blind.

Johnson: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Aguiar: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

One of the players asked for an ace and two diamonds for a nice sweat. Instead it was a sweat of a different sort: {j-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs}, giving Aguiar an open-ended straight draw and an overcard. A diamond would make things even more sweaty, and the dealer delivered one with the {2-Diamonds}.

Johnson had to be having flashbacks to last year's main event, when Jackie Glazier flushed him out on the river with {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, but this year Johnson got the brick he needed with the {6-Spades}, eliminating Aguiar and recouping some of the chips he recently bled away.
