Ivey, Hellmuth & Pique Among the Masses Returning for Day 2c

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Two days ago the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event saw 3,768 players (the largest WSOP Main Event starting field in history) pack the Rio All-Suite Casino for Day 1c action. After five two-hours levels of play, 2,571 had advanced to Day 2c. Today, those players will return for five more levels of play as they look to punch their ticket to Day 3 and come one step closer to making the money.

Eric Tracy will begin today as the chip leader with 206,175, though Phil Ivey is hot on his heels with 187,025 after winning one of the last hands of the night on Day 1c. Others starting the day with big stacks are Ronald Pease (181,850), Nick Yunis (171,100), Tom Sarra, Jr. (168,100), Martin Hansen (167,250), Jared Bleznick (165,200), and Blair Hinkle (161,650).

Another player returning to action today is Pauly "Walnuts" Bianchi, who was in Chicago hours before the Main Event on Day 1c and gambled his way in thanks to three hands of blackjack. He will be joined by 13-time gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth (49,425); footballer Gerard Pique (23,325); NFL star Richard Seymour (27,100); NBA player Paul Pierce (60,400); 2002 WSOP Main Event champ Robert Varkonyi (60,900); 2005 WSOP champ Joe Hachem (48,175); winner of the $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop Daniel Colman (49,225); and "The Great Dane" Gus Hansen (90,550).

All of those players will be looking to survive the day, much like 822 did on Day 2a/b. That is when Tim Stansifer bagged up 481,500, the mark to beat today for anyone looking to advance to Day 3 as the overall chip leader. Others who've already advanced to Day 3 include Antonio Esfandiari (277,800), Abe Mosseri (260,500), Eric Cloutier (236,000), 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker (222,000), Faraz Jaka (195,000), Ole Schemion (180,900), Marvin Rettenmaier (173,200), Erik Seidel (130,600), Allen Cunningham (114,400), 1996 WSOP Main Event champion Huck Seed (96,500), and reigning champion Ryan Riess (84,900).

Cards will be in the air at 12 p.m. local time, which is less than two hours from now. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the action from Day 2c, so stay tuned!

Seymour Sacked by Vohra

Nível 6 : 250/500, 50 ante
Richard Seymour (from Day 1c)
Richard Seymour (from Day 1c)

Former New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Richard Seymour raised to 1,100 in the hijack and was called by three players, including Raj Vohra on the button.

The flop fell {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and all three players checked to Vohra who bet 3,000. Action folded to Seymour who shoved for about 23,700, sending Vohra into the tank for about 45 seconds before he called.

Seymour: {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}
Vohra: {A-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Seymour had the better trip aces with his jack kicker and maintained the advantage through the {5-Diamonds} turn. But the {7-Spades} landed on the river to give Vohra aces full of sevens and eliminate Seymour.

Feature Article: Paul Pierce, Gerard Piqué and Other Athletes Square Off at the WSOP

The World Series of Poker brings together poker players from all over the world, including top athletes and celebrities. This year, the WSOP Main Event was glistened by stars such as world-class footballer Gerard Piqué, future NBA hall of famer Paul Pierce, star NFL defensive lineman Richard Seymour, Australian cricket legend Shane Warne, and the UFC's Martin Kampmann.

With $10,000 and a dream, any normal person has the chance to lock horns on the felt with these top athletes. You may not be able to beat them in their respective sport, but anything can happen at the poker table.

In this recent feature article by Kim Yuhl, the top athletes playing in this year's Main Event give their thoughts about poker, the WSOP, and more.

Big Action at Table 449

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Justin Lunin-Pack
Justin Lunin-Pack

Prior to the break, Justin Lunin-Pack raised to 1,125 in early position, Seyed Edalat three-bet to 4,000 on his direct left, and a player on the button called. Brian Ballentine then four-bet to 14,900 out of the big blind, Lunin-Pack five-bet to what looked like 43,125 — he haphazardly threw a stack of oranges and yellows forward — and Edalat called all in.

The player on the button folded, and Ballentine committed the remainder of his stack.

Lunin-Pack: {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Edalat: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Ballentine: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Lunin-Pack was in good shape to win an additional 60,000 or so and push his stack over 200,000, but the {k-Hearts} poked through the window to give both of his opponents a superior pair. It was followed by the {10-Clubs} and the {j-Clubs}, however, giving him an open-ended straight draw.

The turn was the {j-Hearts}, pairing the board, and a meaningless {2-Hearts} completed the board. Lunin-Pack's two opponents doubled, while he dropped down to 150,000 chips.

Brutal End for "basebaldy"

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Eric Baldwin in earlier WSOP action.
Eric Baldwin in earlier WSOP action.

In one of the first hands back from break, WSOP bracelet winner Eric "basebadly" Baldwin got involved in a big hand with Avinash Kataria.

When we arrived at the table, Kataria had 6,600 laid out in front of him in the big blind and Baldwin had popped it to 14,200 from the cutoff. Kataria, who had the bigger stack, thought for a few moments before announcing that he was all in, and Baldwin sort of shrugged before calling off for right around 50,000.

Baldwin: {k-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}
Kataria: {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Baldwin was in a dominating spot and primed to double to 100,000. The {4-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop was safe enough for Baldwin, and so was the {6-Hearts} turn. All Baldwin had to do was dodge a queen on the river, but then the dealer delivered a dagger through his heart by burning and putting out the {Q-Spades}. Baldwin seemed a bit shell-shocked, but eventually tossed forward his chips, wished the table luck, and then took his leave from the 2014 WSOP Main Event.

Hanks Drowns on the River

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Brent Hanks in earlier WSOP action.
Brent Hanks in earlier WSOP action.

Brent Hanks began the day on a short stack, and he's played patiently waiting for a spot. He finally found it when he was in the cutoff and committed his last 4,975. Ronny Schimpf didn't seem too excited to call from the big blind, but he did so nonetheless.

Hanks: {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Schimpf: {k-Hearts}{10-Spades}

"Yup, woke up with it," Hanks said when Schimpf commented on his prime holdings. Hanks was ahead, and he managed to make a set on the {j-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop. However, Schimpf managed to pick up an up-and-down straight draw. The {6-Diamonds} turn was of no consequence, but the {a-Hearts} was as it completed the aforementioned straight.

With that, Hanks' 2014 WSOP has come to an end.

Because He's Phil Ivey

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

Phil Ivey tossed out a bet of 14,000 on a flop of {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Lazaro Hernandez called, and Fabian Scherle moved all in for 44,000. Ivey reshoved for effectively 130,000, and Hernandez paused.

"I guess I'm going home," Hernandez said, finally risking his six-figure stack.

Ivey: {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Hernandez: {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Scherle: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

"Why did you say you're going home?" Ivey said incredulously, after seeing that Hernandez had the nuts.

"Because you're Phil Ivey!" Hernandez responded.

Hernandez added a flush draw when the turn was the {5-Hearts}, and just needed to fade a ten, nine, six, or five on the river to double through. The dealer rapped the felt, burned one final card, then delivered the river.

The {10-Clubs}.

Ivey boated up, making sixes full of tens and pushing his stack to nearly 400,000 chips, and Hernandez's premonition came true — he's going home.

Looking Back at Level 7: Baldwin and Hanks Fall; Ivey Takes Chip Lead

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Phil Ivey

Level 7 has come to an end, which means it's time for another 20-minute break. During this time the WSOP staff will be racing off the green T25 chips. Upon their return, the remaining players will play one more level before taking their 90-minute dinner break. After that, they'll play two more levels before bagging and tagging for the night.

Level 7 saw plenty of chips move about, and some bad beats to boot. One of them was a nasty river card put an end to Eric "basebaldy" Baldwin's 2014 WSOP; likewise, Brent Hanks also fell on the river, though it wasn't quite as bad as Baldwin's bust.

Another player to fall was the inaugural WSOP National Champion, Sam Barnhart, who was eliminated from play courtesy of Darren Rabinowitz.

On the flip side, Phil Ivey changed rooms and promptly vaulted into the chip lead, due in no small part to a double elimination, while NBA champion Paul Pierce managed to finish the level with 96,500 in chips. Clearly Level 7 was kind to two of the biggest names in the room.

While you wait for action to resume, check out PokerNews' Day 2c update:

The Sun Sets on "WCGRider"

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Doug Polk
Doug Polk

We noticed that WSOP bracelet winner Doug "WCGRider" Polk was no longer in his seat, which led us to believe that he had been eliminated from the tournament. Sure enough, a quick check with Ola "no_Ola" Amundsgard confirmed that Polk had fallen.

As Amundsgard told it, Polk shoved from middle position for his last 15,000 or so holding {9-}{9-} and Yun Fan woke up with {a-}{k-} in the big blind. An ace on the flop was all it took to eliminate one of online poker's most fierce competitors, and while Polk is no doubt disappointed, he leaves the 2014 WSOP with a coveted gold bracelet.

Hansen Busted

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Gus Hansen's Day 2 was all downhill.
Gus Hansen's Day 2 was all downhill.

Gus Hansen began the day with a very solid stack of 90,000, but it seemed to be smaller every time we walked by and checked on it. Finally, he was no longer in his seat, so we asked the players at the table what happened. Apparently, Hansen got the last of it in with a straight draw on the flop against an opponent who held two pair, and Hansen failed to get there.
