Mercier Leads as 55 Players Return for Day 3 Action

Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

The 2014 World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players' Championship, a tournament designed to determine the game's greatest all-around player, attracted 102 players that generated a total prize pool of $4,896,000. It is the smallest $50,000 mixed game championship since 2009 (95 entries), but there is still a juicy $1,517,767 first-place prize awaiting the winner.

"Poker greats consider the winner of the event the best all-around player because it demonstrates he or she can outplay the competition in a wide range of game variations with high stakes on the line," the WSOP boasts of the event.

Just 55 players will return for Day 3 action, and of those Jason Mercier leads with over 800,000 in chips. Other big stacks include Jonathan Duhamel (783,000), Shaun Deeb (724,400), David Steicke (711,100), and Matt Glantz (522,800). Glantz is in search of his third career final table in this event — he finished fourth in 2008 for $568,320, and fifth in 2011 for $376,750.

Also among the Day 2 survivors are Scott Seiver, John Hennigan, Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, and 2014 bracelet winners Brandon Shack-Harris, Calvin Anderson, Robert Mizrachi, and Brock Parker. David Bach (17,400) is the only defending champion remaining, but he has a lot of work to do on Day 3 and beyond if he wants to take a repeat trip to the winner's circle as he is one of the short stacks.

Only the top 14 players will be guaranteed a minimum payday of $99,388, and each member of the seven-handed official final table will pocket a minimum of $165,435. We won't get there today, but our best guesstimates suggest we'll make it down to 24 players or so here on Day 3.

Not only will the eventual winner take home a WSOP gold bracelet and a large payday, they'll have their name inscribed on the commemorative "Chip Reese Trophy," which is named in honor of the inaugural winner, who passed away in 2007. "The iconic trophy was first added for the event's champion in 2008, with the winner keeping the top part of the trophy for the year, while his name is engraved on the bottom half, etched forever in history," the WSOP explains.

Who will be the next to add their name to this prestigious list of champions?

Bach's Elimination Ensures a New Champion Will Be Crowned

Nível 11
David Bach
David Bach

Limit Hold'em

David Bach won this event back in 2009, and he began Day 3 as the only former champ remaining in the field. Unfortunately he did so on an extremely short stack.

He got the last of his chips all in on a hand of limit hold'em and found himself racing against Daniel Alaei. Bach held pocket nines while Alaei was sitting with {q-}{j-}. Long story short, the nines failed to hold and Bach took his leave from the tournament.

That means a first-time champion is guaranteed in this year's $50,000 Poker Players' Championship.

Shakerchi and ElkY Chop Up Chidwick

Nível 11

Omaha 8

A short-stacked Stephen Chidwick got his last 21,100 all in preflop and was up against Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Talal Shakerchi. The {4-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop saw Grospellier bet, Shakerchi call, and then both active players check the {10-Hearts} turn.

When the {8-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Grospellier bet 12,000 and Shakerchi called. Grospellier tabled the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Spades}{7-Clubs} for aces and eights, Shakerchi the {a-Clubs}{3-Spades}{k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} for a low, and Chidwick the {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for a loser.

Grospellier and Shakerchi chopped it up and Chidwick took his leave from the tournament.

Oppenheim: {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Bilokur: {a-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

The board completed {5-Clubs}, {10-Clubs} respectively, and Bilokur was eliminated. Oppenheim is up to 545,000 chips.

Action folded around to David Steicke on the button and he popped it up to 10,000. Brian Hastings was in the big blind and quickly announced a three-bet ship for his last 80,000. Steicke called and the hands were turned on their backs.

Steicke: {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Hastings: {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}

The board fell down {6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{2-Spades}, allowing Hastings to score the double. He's now up to 190,000 while Steicke has dropped to 495,000.

Deeb's Cadillac Stalls

Shaun Deeb (Day 2)
Shaun Deeb (Day 2)

No-Limit Hold'em

Shaun Deeb has just lost five consecutive hands of no-limit hold'em, dropping his stack to 300,000 chips.

Hand #1: Robert Mizrachi led out for 45,000 on a flop of {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades}, Shaun Deeb called, and the turn was the {9-Diamonds}. Mizrachi fired out another 75,500 - leaving 65,000 or so behind - and Deeb tank-folded.

Hand #2: Melissa Burr raised to 10,500 on the button, and Deeb defended in the big blind. The flop was {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Deeb check-folded to a bet of 18,500.

Hand #3: John Monnette raised to 9,500 from under the gun, Mizrachi three-bet to 26,500 on the button, and Deeb cold four-bet to 63,000 out of the big blind. Monnette folded, Mizrachi called, and the flop fell {k-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}. Deeb checked, Mizrachi bet 23,500, and Deeb folded.

Hand #4: Mizrachi raised to 8,500 out of the cutoff, Deeb called on the button, and Monnette called out of the big blind. Monnette led out for 15,500 on a flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, only Deeb called, and the turn was the {4-Hearts}. Deeb called a bet of 33,000, and Monnette fired out yet another 33,000 on the river ({10-Diamonds}). Deeb snap-called, showing {7-Hearts}{7-Spades} for a set of sevens, but Monnette had him beat with {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a flush.

Hand #5 Deeb raised in the cutoff, Jesse Martin defended his big blind, and the dealer spread {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Martin check-called a bet of 10,000, both players checked on the turn ({j-Spades}), and the {4-Diamonds} completed the board. Martin led out for 28,000, Deeb called, and Martin won the pot with {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} for a pair of jacks.

Anderson Wins Massive Three-Way All In

Calvin Anderson looks for a return trip to the Mothership

Pot-Limit Omaha

Lyle Berman raised to 12,000 in middle position, Calvin Anderson called on the button, and Bryce Yockey called out of the small blind. The flop fell {q-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}, and after a series of pot bets, all three hands were tabled.

Anderson: {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Berman: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Yockey: {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}

Berman held a set of nines, Anderson held both straight and flush draws, and the turn was a meaningless {6-Hearts}. The {10-Diamonds} on the river was a huge card for Anderson - giving him a flush - and he scooped the whole pot to more than double to 675,000 chips.

Yockey was eliminated, and Berman is left with only 70,000 chips.

"I'm so bad," Yockey sighed before exiting. "Good luck, guys."

Pot-Limit Omaha

Jesse Martin opened with a raise to 14,000 and Melissa Burr announced a pot-sized raise from the button, making it 49,000 to go. Action came back around to Martin and he repotted, allowing Burr to call all in for 97,000 total.

Martin: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Burr: {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{J-Spades}{Q-Hearts}, giving Burr a full house of jacks full of queens. She scored the double and now has around 210,000 in chips. Martin, on the other hand, has dropped to about 925,000.

Burr's double up keeps her alive not only in the tournament, but also in her side bet with Robert Mizrachi. Yesterday, Burr tweeted that Mizrachi laid her 15-1 odds to cash in this very event. As long as Burr has chips, she's alive and a contender for this bet.
