Who Will Walk Away as the 2014 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players' Champion?

Brandon Shack-Harris begins the day as chip leader.
Brandon Shack-Harris begins the day as chip leader.

What started with 102 players in the 2014 World Series of Poker $50,000 Poker Players' Championship is now down to the unofficial final table of eight. Today those players will return to the Rio All-Suite Casino in Las Vegas to play down to a winner, who will walk away with $1,517,767, a gold bracelet, and have their name inscribed on the Chip Reese Memorial Trophy.

The man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is 2014 WSOP bracelet winner and Player of the Year contender Brandon Shack-Harris, who begins the day with 4,101,000 chips. Another player to keep an eye on is Melissa Burr, who became the first woman to ever cash in this event.

Joining Shack-Harris and Burr on Day 5 will be Frank Kassela, Abe Mosseri, Allen Kessler, Jesse Martin, Chun Lei "samrostan" Zhou, and John Hennigan. This is Hennigan’s third straight cash in the Poker Players’ Championship, and his second consecutive final table. The only other player at the final table with a previous cash in this event is Mosseri, who finished 11th in 2010 for $129,957.

Officially, Mosseri is only guaranteed $165,435 with seven players remaining, but it is rumored that he has already locked up $600,000 in side bets by reaching the final table. If he wins, he could earn an additional $300,000 on top of the $1,517,767 first-place prize.

Shack-Harris, who already has first, second, and third-place finishes at the 2014 WSOP, is nipping at George Danzer’s heels in the Player of the Year race, Martin is looked to capture his second gold bracelet in as many years, and Kessler and Zhou are both looking to win their first and only.

Who will walk away as the 2014 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players' Champion? All we know for sure is that it will be one of these eight players:

Abe Mosseri: {x-}{x-} / {5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{k-Spades}{a-Clubs} / {x-}

Kassela brought it in, Mosseri completed, and Kassela made the call. Mosseri check-called a bet on fourth street, both players knuckled on fifth, and Mosseri led out on sixth. Kassela called.

Kassela called one last bet on seventh street, then mucked when Mosseri showed {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} for two pair.

Allen Kessler: {x-}{x-} / {5-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs} / {x-}
Mosseri: {x-}{x-} / {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} / {x-}

On the very next hand, Kessler brought it in and Mosseri completed. Kessler called, both players checked on fourth street, and Kessler check-called bets on fifth, sixth, and seventh.

The bet from Mosseri on seventh put Kessler all in, and he begrudgingly committed the remainder of his stack. Mosseri showed {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a straight, and Kessler showed {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}, claiming he bricked his flush draw.

Jesse Martin brought it in with the {3-Diamonds}, John Hennigan completed with the {a-Clubs}, and Melissa Burr moved all in for 31,000. The action folded back to Hennigan, who called.

Hennigan: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} / {a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} / {7-Hearts}
Burr: {10-Hearts}{3-Hearts} / {5-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{q-Spades} / {10-Spades}

Burr started off with four hearts, but it didn't matter when Hennigan made quads by fifth street. Burr, the first woman to cash and make the final table of the $50,000 Poker Players' Championship received a big round of applause as she exited the Mothership, and she'll earn $165,435 for her efforts.

Three-Quarters for Martin, Who Then Receives a Warning

Nível 21

Omaha 8

Chun Lei Zhou raised on the button, Brandon Shack-Harris made it three bets out of the small blind, and Jesse Martin reraised to four bets in the big blind. Zhou and Shack-Harris both called.

The dealer fanned {q-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}, Shack-Harris checked, and Martin tossed out a bet. Zhou raised to two bets, Shack-Harris check-raised to three bets, and only Martin called.

The turn was the {8-Diamonds}, Martin called a bet from Shack-Harris, and the {3-Hearts} completed the board. Shack-Harris led out, Martin called, and the hands were tabled.

Shack-Harris: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} (Pair of queens and the nut low)
Martin: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{10-Spades}{2-Clubs} (Pair of kings and the nut low)

Martin won three-quarters of the pot, but became a bit perturbed while the dealer was trying to split the pot. He started offering help and giving direction, but the tournament director intervened, telling Martin to allow the dealer to split the pot.

"It's easy," Martin said, continuing to disagree with the dealers' methods.

At this point other players started to chime in, and the tournament director silenced all of them. He then issued a warning to Martin, who took a deep breath to compose himself.

"I feel like you're scolding me," Martin told the tournament director.

No-Limit Hold'em

Frank Kassela raised to 90,000 in the hijack seat, Chun Le Zhou moved all in for 520,000 out of the small blind, and Kassela called.

Kassela: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}
Zhou: {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Kassela was a slight mathematical favorite with his wired pair of nines, but the {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop gave Zhou a pair of tens. The man from Macau doubled through as turn and river came {a-Hearts}, {2-Hearts} respectively, and he now has 1.14 million chips.

The 2010 WSOP Player of the Year dropped down to 1.02 million.

Stud

Frank Kassela was all in on third street against John Hennigan, and the boards were dealt out as such:

Kassela: {7-Hearts}{10-Clubs} / {a-Hearts}{4-Spades}{k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
Hennigan: {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} / {5-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Kassela had the lead with a pair of fours going into seventh street, but Hennigan turned over the {10-Hearts} for a superior pair of tens. Kassela turned over a big red brick - the {q-Diamonds} - and he was eliminated in sixth place.

The 2010 WSOP Player of the Year earns $212,829.

Omaha 8

Brandon Shack-Harris limped under the gun (he would later admit that he thought he was putting out the big blind), and that inspired three other players to do the same. The {2-Spades}{7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} flop saw three players checked to John Hennigan, and he bet 80,000 from the button. Abe Mosseri called from the small blind, and then Chun Lei "samorstan" Zhou check-raised to 160,000. Shack-Harris folded, the other two players called, and three players watched the dealer burn and turn the {8-Diamonds}.

Mosseri checked, Zhou bet all in for his last 160,000, and both Hennigan and Mosseri called. The two active players then checked the {6-Spades} river.

Mosseri: {q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Hennigan: {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Zhou: {k-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades}.

Zhou's two pair was no good as Mosseri had a flush for the high and Hennigan an 8-7-4-2-A low. The last of Zhou's chips were chopped up and he was dispatched in fifth place for $286,122.

After Mosseri stood pat on the final draw and Shack-Harris drew one, they turned over their cards.

"I have a really bad hand," Mosseri said, showing {q-}{9-}{8-}{7-}{6-}.

"You made me break," Shack-Harris told him, revealing {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}.

Shack-Harris ripped over a {2-}, giving him an eighty-six, and Mosseri was eliminated.

"What did you break?" John Hennigan asked Shack-Harris after the hand.

"A nine," Shack-Harris told him.

"You broke a f***ing nine?" Hennigan spat at him before giggling with Jesse Martin.

"That's Nasty Isn't It?"

Pot-Limit Omaha

Brandon Shack-Harris raised to 200,000 from the button only to have John Hennigan three-bet the pot to 640,000. Shack-Harris opted to just called and watched Hennigan bet the pot of 1.32 million on the {a-Spades}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop. Shack-Harris pushed back by raising the pot and Hennigan called off for 2.86 million total.

Shack-Harris: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}{j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}
Hennigan: {a-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Hennigan held two pair while Shack-Harris had a flush draw.

"That's nasty isn't it?" Hennigan said when the {8-Clubs} turn gave Shack-Harris a bunch more outs. Much to Hennigan's surprise, the {K-Clubs} river failed to help Shack-Harris. "Wow," Hennigan said before retaking his seat and being pushed the double.
