Welcome back to the 2014 World Series of Poker Event #35: $5,000 Eight-Handed No-Limit Hold'em. Yesterday this tournament attracted 550 of the best players in the world, which created a prize pool of $2,585,000. Today, 170 of those players will return for 10 more one-hour levels of play, during which time they hope to crack the top 56 players to make the money with the hope of making it all the way to the $633,341 first-place prize.

The man best positioned to make a run at it is none other than 2012 WSOP $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop runner-up Sam Trickett, who will begin today as the chip leader with 172,000. Josh Arieh (151,200), Dan Smith (144,400), Steven Kerr (123,900), and Fred Kulikowski (122,500) round out the top five big stacks.

Others returning today include Jeff Madsen (114,500), Chris Tryba (111,900), Sorel Mizzi (84,000), Jason Somerville (78,200), Dan Shak (77,000), Mike “Timex” McDonald (51,000), Vanessa Selbst (39,500), Igor Kurganov (39,200), Jennifer Tilly (36,200), Philipp Gruissem (28,700), John Juanda (25,200), and Jason Mercier (18,200).

Kerr's Kings Send Kurganov to the Rail

In one of the last hands of Level 10, we happened upon a hand in progress with around 30,000 in the pot and a board reading . Igor Kurganov was in the cutoff debating what to do, and that's because Canadian Steven Kerr had the all-in button out in front of him on the button.

Kurganov had about 35,000 in his stack, and he thought long and hard before committing it to the pot.

Kurganov had made the wrong decision, but he could still win with either a jack or ten on the river. The dealer burned one last time and put out the . Close, but no cigar for Kurganov.

"Good luck guys," he offered before collecting his things and exiting the tournament area. With that, Kerr is now up to 200,000.

Bowker Busts Selbst in 250K Pot

From the cutoff seat, Kyle Bowker raised to 4,500. After the player in the small blind made the call, Vanessa Selbst reraised to 16,200 out of the big blind. Bowker requested to see how many chips Selbst had behind. After doing so, Bowker announced that he was all in. The player in the small blind folded, and Selbst called to put herself at risk for around 122,000 or so.

Selbst tabled the and was dominating the for Bowker.

On the flop, Bowker took the lead when the fell. The turn was the and the river the . Selbst finished second best to Bowker in the hand, and he had her covered. With that, Selbst was out the door short of the money while Bowker catapulted himself into the chip lead with 287,000.

Cousineau Doubles; Mizrachi Eliminates Chidwick

Action folded around to Eric Baldwin on the button and he asked Tony Cousineau and Greg Ostrander how much they had in the small and big blind, respectively. Upon ascertaining that information, Baldwin announced that he was all in.

Cousineau squeezed out his cards and then announced that he, too, was all in. Ostrander folded from the big blind.

Cousineau had woken up with the right hand at the right time, and was rewarded after the board ran out a safe .

Meanwhile, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi had eliminated Stephen Chidwick from the same table a few minutes before. Unfortunately we missed the hand, but we do know it helped Mizrachi increase his stack to 240,000.

Duhamel Cracks Kings to Eliminate Mizzi

We saw Sorel Mizzi making a hasty exit from the tournament area, and by the time we arrived at his former table action was complete. However, we were able to catch the cards and some players helped us piece together what went down.

As it was related to us, 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel opened with a raise and then called when Mizzi three-bet. Duhamel then checked the flop, Mizzi bet, and Duhamel check-raised. Mizzi proceeded to move all in and Duhamel called him.

Mizzi had pocket cowboys, but Duhamel had gotten lucky to flop two pair. The turn didn't help Mizzi, and neither did the river. That is the story of Mizzi's demise.

Arieh Wants the Whole Pot, but Only Gets Half

At the end of the last level, from the cutoff seat, Mustapha Kanit raised to 5,000. Josh Arieh called from the button, and the player in the big blind also called.

The flop came down , and the player in the big blind checked. Kanit bet 7,000, and Arieh called. The player in the big blind folded.

The turn was the to pair the board. Kanit bet 17,300, and Arieh called to see the land on the river. Kanit bet 27,200, and Arieh made the call after a bit of thought.

After Arieh called, Kanit flashed him the and then dropped his hand facedown on the felt. The dealer reached out and grabbed Kanit's cards, but didn't turn them over, nor did he pull them into the muck. At this point, Arieh hadn't showed his hand, but someone else at the table piped up and said that a winning hand must be shown. Arieh asked if Kanit's hand was dead. The dealer didn't say anything, but the table repeated that a winning hand must be shown. The dealer then tabled Kanit's hand to reveal the .

Arieh requested the floor to be called and claimed that Kanit's hand should be dead because he had mucked it. The dealer didn't pull it into the muck, though, therefore it was ruled that Kanit's hand was live. Arieh wanted the entire pot, but it was ruled that he would get only half after turning over the for a chopped pot.

Kerr Exits Gracefully After Bad Beat

We missed the preflop action, but we do know a big three-way all in just went down between Ludovic Riehl, Steven Kerr and Eric Froehlich. Froehlich was all in for 49,000, Kerr for 62,500, and Riehl had them both covered.

Kerr was ahead with his queens, and he stayed there on the flop. Kerr was clearly nervous as he was on his feet sweating the hand, and that is when disaster struck. The dealer burned and turned the , which gave Froehlich, who had started with the worst hand, the lead with two pair and Riehl the lead in the side pot.

The river filled Froehlich up, and he tripled on the hand. Meanwhile, Riehl eliminated Kerr, who finished in 47th place, but not before shaking hands with everyone remaining at the table.
