Day 2 Ends with 20 Players in the Hunt for Event #29’s Bracelet; Jamie Armstrong Leads

At 1 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon, 209 poker players returned to their seats in the Amazon Room of the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino all sharing the common goal of making it into the money and then progressing to the tournament’s third day of action.

The dream of cashing was dashed for 92 players who fell by the wayside before the money was awarded. Some of those who fell short included Tristan Wade, Sunny Chattha, Brent Hanks, Gordon Vayo, and Nick Rampone.

When the money bubble did burst, it was thanks to Oleg Badmayev and his huge call with a pair of threes on an board, at it opened the floodgates for a surge of eliminations. Some of the big names earning some money from Event #29 included recent bracelet winner Kyle Cartwright, Amanda Musumeci, Tony Dunst, Griffin Benger, Will "The Thrill" Failla, Scotty Nguyen, Roberto Romanello, David "Doc" Sands, and former Main Event champion Jerry Yang.

When the tournament director called time on proceedings, after 10 hour-long levels, only 20 players remained in contention for the $536,768 first-place prize and the WSOP bracelet that comes with it. Leading those 20 back into battle at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday afternoon will be Jamie Armstrong, who ended the night with a tournament-leading stack of 765,000. Hot on Armstrong’s heels was Barry Hutter, who has been among the chip leaders since this tournament started. Hutter will begin Day 3 with 731,000 chips.

Other big stacks and notables included Chris Johnson (665,000), Sam Cohen (654,000), Rep Porter (463,000), Matt Salsberg (447,000), David Benefield, (355,000), Justin Oliver (284,000), and William Reynolds (223,000).

Isaac Baron Eliminated in 21st Place ($16,220)

With a board reading and a considerable amount in the pot, former November Niner David Benefield got moved all in and Isaac Baron, who barely had the small stack, quickly called off.

Baron confidently tabled for a full house, and he seemed a bit shell shocked when Benefield rolled over the for a bigger boat.

Baron was in disbelief as he collected his backpack and exited the tournament floor in 21st place for $16,220.

Action exploded between Chris Johnson and Ben Warrington on a flop that resulted in the latter getting his last 200,000 or so in the middle.

Warrington had flopped top pair, but it was no good as Johnson had flopped top and bottom pairs. The turn improved Johnson to a full house, and after the was put out on the river, Warrington made his way to the payout desk in 28th place.

Meanwhile, Binh Nguyen busted one table over at the same time as Warrington. That means 26 players will redraw to the final three tables as opposed to the usual 27.

Big Double for Nicholson

The turn improved both players to trips, but Serock's kicker had him out in front. That is when the dealer burned one last time and put out the .

Kirsch spiked his flush to knock out Serock, who was gracious enough to slide his chips over to the victor.

The March to the Money Begins on Day 2 of Event #29 $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em

The 2014 World Series of Poker continued yesterday with the start of Event #29: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em. The tournament attracted 1,165 entries — down considerably from last year's 1,736 — but today just 209 players will return for Day 2 action.

Of those 117 will make the money and secure a minimum payday of $5,035, though everyone has their eyes firmly fixed on the gold bracelet and $536,768 firs-place prize. Barry Hutter, who has two final tables on the World Poker Tour and a sixth-place in a $1,000 WSOP event in 2013, will begin the day as chip leader with 150,500 in chips.

Rounding out the top five stacks are Grayson Ramage (138,800), 2013 bracelet winner Justin Oliver (115,100), Richard Kirsch (110,000), and Rep Porter (107,900).

While those men begin the day flush in chips, they face some stiff competition that includes Isaac Baron (103,100), Roberto Romanello (73,100), David "The Dragon" Pham (72,500), Kevin Saul (58,000), Tristan Wade (52,900), Will "The Thrill" Failla (51,300), Josh Arieh (46,800), David Benefield (45,100), Kyle Cartwright (44,300), Griffin Benger (40,100), Scotty Nguyen (39,600), and Amanda Musumeci (33,000).

Cards will be back in the air at 1 p.m. local time, and things will pick up in Level 11 with the blinds at 500/1,000/100. The money bubble is expected to burst within the first couple levels, so be sure to stay tuned for that along with all the action and eliminations through ten more one-hour levels of play.
