Tang Tops Counts on Single Bullet; Koon and Ivey with Big Stacks in the HKD $1-Million Short Deck Ante Only Event

The high stakes tournament action in the Triton Super High Roller Series did not conclude with Mikita Badziakouski’s Main Event victory, but ratcheted up to new heights as the HKD $1-million (~$132,000) Short Deck Ante Only Event got underway.

Some of the game’s biggest names fought it out at the felt, with 50 entries (including 18 re-entries) anteing up and getting involved in only the second-ever tournament of this type ever held. With all deuces through to fives removed from the traditional deck of 52-cards the game plays with a deck of 36, flushes beat full houses and jack-ten plays like ace-king.

The tables did not run over six-handed, allowing a great deal of aggressive play and, dare we say it, quite a bit of gambling. The action was high tempo from the start, with players quite willing to get all the chips in at a moments notice, with frequent multi-way all-in showdowns seemingly the norm, at least while the re-entry period remained open – which it will until the end of level 9 on Day 2.

Players began with a 300,000 chip stack, split up into three 100,000 bullets which players could take all at once, or one at a time – which appeared to be the more popular option – and played seven 60-minute levels.

While 50 players entered, only 13 survived the carnage that ensued once game time began with players of the caliber of Phil Ivey, Jason Koon, Dan “jungleman12” Cates, Richard Yong, two-time Triton SHR Champion Wai Kin Yong, Paul Phua and Winfred Yu just some of the familiar faces showcasing their short deck skills.

This may be a new game, but Ivey already has the form, having taken down the HKD $250,000 Short Deck Ante Only opening event earlier in the festival for a US$600,000 payday.

While it took him two attempts, Ivey climbed near to the top of the counts once again, bagging up 1,083,000. However, it is Hong Kong’s Devan Tang who topped the counts with a massive 2.3-million-chip-stack, which took him just a single 100k bullet of his initial entry.

Tang is well practiced at the Short Deck Ante Only format though, and is a regular in the monster cash games that take place in Macau. Tang is also pretty good at tournaments, with over US$4.3M in live tournament winnings, putting him at #3 on the China All Time Money List.

US pro Jason Koon also enjoyed the rub of the green, concluding play with a stack of 1.81 million. Koon climbed to the top of the counts early after playing a massive pot against fellow countryman Gabe Patgorski, with the pair playing a 750,000-chip pot on just the second level of the day.

Other notables to lock up a Day 2 berth included China’s ‘Shanghai’ Wang Qiang (1,490,000), Canadian pro Peter Jetten (1,451,000), Jaime Kaplan (1,401,000) and Andrew Robl (750,000).

While it took him multiple attempts, Patgorski made it through with a stack of 750,000 and endured a rollercoaster ride of a day, dusting off a huge stack to Tang that saw the latter shoot to the top of the counts and the former re-enter for the third time. The pair got all the chips in on the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} flop, and while Patgorski’s flopped full house was leading his opponent’s {q-Spades}{j-Spades}, Tang spiked a spade on the river to win the monster pot.

Amongst those to hit the rail were Dan Cates, Russia’s Mikhail Smirnov, Triton founder Richard Yong, Wai Kin Yong, Main Event finalist Rui Cao, and 2016 Monte Carlo One Drop Extravaganza Champion Elton Tsang.

The Chips Are Flying on the Feature Table

Nível 5 : 0/0, 3,000 ante
Phil Ivey

Marius Torbergsen raised to 40,000 with the {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts} and Jason Koon called with {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}. On the {Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{7-Spades} flop, Koon jammed for more than 1.6 million and Torbergsen called off his shorter stack. The {A-Diamonds} turn gave Torbergsen top pair, but the {8-Spades} river improved Koon to a straight.

Then, Ivey shoved for 59,000 with the {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} first to act and Koon called with {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Alan Sass moved all in for 97,000 with the {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}, Koon called and joked "I think Phil is gonna win this one" before the showdown proceeded.

Ivey indeed flopped trips on {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, but the {A-Clubs} turn gave Sass a full house. The {K-Spades} on the river didn't provide the one outer and Ivey busted on his last bullet for now.

Patgorski Rides Rollercoaster, Tang Takes Lead, Arnaud Busts Zhou and Takes from Ivey

Nível 3 : 0/0, 2,000 ante
Gabe Patgorski
Gabe Patgorski

An absolutely huge hand went down between Gabe Patgorski and Devan Tang that saw the former's newly won chips find their way over to Tang's stack. We arrived in the aftermath but Patgorski was kind enough to give us all the gory details.

With 16,000 in the pot and the flop spread {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} all the chips went in and the cards were turned over. Patgorski had flopped the full house and Tang was drawing live with {q-Spades}{j-Spades} for the straight flush draw - with flushes beating a boat in this crazy game - and while the {6-Clubs} turn was not the spade the Hong Kong player needed the {a-Spades} was.

Tang climbed to over 2.2 million while Patgorski reloaded and fired for 100,000 the very next hand,but got no customers.

While this was going on there was another big pot playing out over on Phil Ivey's table with all the chips going in, in a three-way pot between Ivey, Romain Arnaud and Yueqine Zhou.

Phil Ivey: {a-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Romain Arnaud: {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Yueqine Zhou: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

The board ran out {a-Spades}{7-Hearts}{8-Clubs} {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} to see Zhou bust, Ivey drop to 145,000 and Arnaud climbed to 350,000.

Carnage Before First Break

Nível 2 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Jason Koon

The number of entries has grown to 21, 15 of whom still remain in contention and these 15 are now on their first 15-minute break of the day.

However, just before they headed off we caught a huge pot that played out between Jason Koon and Gabe Patgorski the saw the former decimate the latter's stack.

We picked up the action on a flop of {a-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{10-Spades} with 86,000 already in the pot just as Koon (big blind) led out for 65,000. Patgorski shoved from the button and Koon called immediately.

Jason Koon: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Gabe Patgorski: {a-Spades}{j-Spades}

Unfortunately for Patgorski the {q-Spades} turn gave Koon the nut straight, with the {7-Clubs} river completing the hand. When stacks were counted down Patgorski discovered he still had chips, just not that many and dropped to 20,000 while Koon climbed to 750,000.

Early Triple for Patgorski

Nível 1 : 0/0, 1,000 ante
Gabe Patgorski
Gabe Patgorski

It has not taken long for the action to get going and Gabe Patgorski has binked an early triple on his first bullet with a three-way pre-flop all-in going down between Patgorski, Wai Kin Yong and recent arrival Yong Gang Guo.

We arrived in the aftermath as stacks were being divvied up and extra bullets brought over. Wai Kin Yong was on the button with {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} face up on the felt in front of him, Guo (small blind) had {j-Spades}{10-Clubs} face up on the felt in front of him and Patgorski has {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}.

The community cards were spread {9-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} {6-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} with Patgorski catching his two-outer on the river to take an early lead. Alan Sass and Xuan Tan arrived as all this craziness was going on and have also taken their seats to bring the field up to seven.

The big buy-in high stakes tournament action at the 2018 Triton Super High Roller Montenegro is not restricted to the Main Event, with the HKD $1-million Short Deck Ante Only Event set to start at 4pm local time.

Taking places the luxurious Maestral Resort & Casino in Budva, Montenegro, this is only the second ever time the exciting new Short Deck Ante Only format has been run as a tournament, with the HKD $250,000 (~$31,850) opening event, which Phil Ivey took down for USD $604,992, being the first.

Compared to regular No-Limit Hold'em, this format features a 36-card deck with the 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s removed, with aces doubling as a five instead. With just 36 cards instead of 52, straights become more common, while flushes are a rare sight. In order to adjust for this, the hand ranking chart has been updated and a flush beats a full house.

There's are no blinds; instead, the game is played ante-only, with the button posting a double ante. All players start with 100,000 in chips, plus two extra 100k bullets to be added at any time.

Day 1 of the two-day event will feature seven 60-minute levels with multiple re-entry available during the registration period, which closes at the end of the 15-minute dinner break on level nine, at around 3pm on Friday, 18 May.

With players of the caliber of Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Dan “jungleman12” Cates, Mikita Badziakouski and Triton Poker founder Richard Yong just some of the big names expected to attend, the action will be epic, as will the prize pool.

As always, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to bring you all the thrills from the tournament floor so keep your browser locked to this page to follow all the action.
