The first day of the 2020 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) was a huge success with 15 events showcased on the opening day at PokerStars.

The 2020 WCOOP boasts more than a mouth-watering $80 million in guaranteed prizes across 75 events broken out into three tiers for 225 tournaments in total.

The three-day WCOOP-02-M: $1,050 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, Sunday Slam], 2M Gtd. featured the largest prize pool of the day. By the time the more than five-hour late-registration window closed, the field grew to 1,971 entrants (1,481 entries + 490 re-entries). This means that the players that cash will benefit from the $29,000 overlay.

Day 1 Action

Day 1 had 617 hopefuls remaining when late registration was closed and final payouts were announced. In addition to any progressive bounties collected, the top 239 players were each guaranteed a $1,200 payout with $130,321 slated for Tuesday's winner.

The tournament reached the money with about 15 minutes left to play in the day and was further trimmed down to 211 players to end the day.

Russia's "CryFishCry" bagged the overnight chip lead heading into Day 2 with "nmi128", "Eduardo850", Andries "Pokerger1337" Swart, and "tiltinha" also bagging top five stacks.

Just behind this group are two big-name Finnish poker pros in Tomi "elmerixx" Brouk and Joni "bustoville" Jouhkimainen. Brouk has made a name for himself over the years with more than $10 million in online cashes including nearly $5 million alone at PokerStars according to PocketFives.

Rounding out the top 10 heading into tomorrow were Matt "All_in_at420" Stout, Andy "BowieEffect" Wilson, and "MarinkaHT".

Meanwhile, two PokerStars Team Online members and avid streamers in Fintan "easywithaces" Hand and Ben "Spraggy" Spragg were in action. Both players were unable to get things going and decided not to re-enter after losing their stacks during the late-registration window.

The action will resume for Day 2 on Monday, Aug. 31 with 10 minutes remaining in Level 21 with blinds at 10,000/20,000 and an ante of 2,500. Brouk Ousts Another with Rockets

A player opened from early position to 17,120 and got a call from "mikki696" from the cutoff. Tomi "elmerixx" Brouk three-bet to 80,000 from the small blind. The opening player called before "mikki696" four-bet jammed to 445,525. Brouk was the sole player to call and players turned over their cards.

It was a bit of a cooler for "mikki696" and this player hit the rail after the {5-Spades}{q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Spades} ran out on the board.

Meanwhile, Brouk added $1,000 to his personal bounty while also collecting another $1,000 into his PokerStars account for the elimination.

Wain Wins a Huge Pot for the Chip Lead

Grabenschweiger three-bet enough to put Hand at risk if he called and that is exactly what hand did for 47,405 in total.

Dimov turned over {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for top set and won the hand after Texeira turned over {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} for a lower set.

After the huge cooler, Texeira immediately got back into the action for a fresh stack of 100,000 in chips.

Welcome to Day 1 of the 2020 World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) at PokerStars. The festival guarantees more than a whopping $80 million guarantee across 75 events broken out into Low, Medium, and High events for a 225 tournament schedule.

Today's opening day features many big events and PokerNews will be covering two of the biggest including this coverage of the three-day WCOOP-02-M: $1,050 NLHE [8-Max, Progressive KO, Sunday Slam], $2M Gtd.

The $1,050 KO event kicks off at 1:05 p.m. ET / 6:05 p.m. BST / 7:05 p.m. CET with players starting off with 100,000 in chips and blinds going up slowly every 20 minutes.

A $500 bounty is placed on each player's head. Since this is a progressive bounty tournament, players will collect half the bounty of any player they eliminated directly into their PokerStars account while the other half will be added to their personal bounty for others to poach on.

In addition, players can re-enter twice if they so choose during the 305-minute late registration period provided they have lost all their chips.

Today's Day 1 action will conclude after 7 hours and 45 minutes of play. Surviving players will then return on Monday, Aug. 31 at 1:05 p.m. ET / 6:05 p.m. BST / 7:05 CET and play down until there are just 16 players remaining. Players will then return for one more day of action on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continue until one player remains.
