Jeff Hakim Crushes Day 1a for Chip Lead

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jeffery Hakim
Jeffery Hakim

Jeff Hakim steamrolled the field, making a couple of huge hands at opportune times to bag the chip lead at the conclusion of the first eight levels of Day 1a of PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® €5,300 Main Event.

The online crusher — he has $8 million in cashes primarily as "YoungSupremacy" and "Jeff710" — had his best live result in last year's WSOP Main Event, finishing 22nd for $269,430. Hakim's stack of 305,300 puts him well clear of second-place Stefan Schillhabel, who finished with 203,000.

Day 1a, the first of two starting days, drew 235 players, and a total of 107 survived. They'll get Sunday off and then return on Monday for Day 2.

Midway through the day, Hakim emerged as one of the leaders. He saw a five-way pot with ten-nine and flopped a ten-high straight with two diamonds on the felt. A player with jack-nine of diamonds didn't want to give it up and missed his combo draw to give Hakim 175,000 at 250/500/75.

In the last level of the night, Hakim flopped quads on a four-seven-four flop and check-raised an opponent's 4,500 bet to 11,500. His opponent made it 22,000 to go, and Hakim called. The turn gave his opponent a useless backdoor flush draw to go with two overcards — he'd been bluffing with jack-high on the flop — and that was enough to convince him to shove all in for 70,000.

Of course, that wound up being a sweat-free donation to Hakim's stack.

Schillhabel worked up a huge stack before dinner and then coolered unfortunate opponent Joshua Moore for nearly 200 big blinds with aces over kings.

Other players bagging big included Manig Loeser (195,700), Ole Schemion (144,900), and PokerStars Team Pro Celina Lin (125,500). Expecting couple Jason and Natasha Mercier put chips in the bag, with the former at 83,400 and the latter at 91,600. This despite Jason not buying in until less than an hour remained in the day.

Players eliminated from contention included Anthony Spinella, Stephen Chidwick, Mike Watson, Freddy Deeb, and PokerStars Team Pros Vanessa Selbst, Andre Akkari and Jake Cody. As this event is a freezeout, they won't have another chance to reenter.

There's still time for new entries to register and accumulate chips for Day 2, as Day 1b kicks off Sunday at noon local time here in Monaco. Come back to PokerNews then for more coverage.

Yaroshevskyy Busts Selbst

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Vanessa Selbst
Vanessa Selbst

As we arrived, Selbst had just pushed all in for a sizable amount of chips on a board of {J-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}.

Igor Yaroshevskyy called on the river with {5-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Selbst flashed her cards before she made her exit. We caught the {K-Clubs} but are unsure of what the second card was.

Yaroshevskyy told us afterward that Selbst had opened preflop and had fired every street. Yaroshevskyy just called all the way and send the PokerStars Team Pro home with the rivered flush.

Schemion Beat Sends Silver Out

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Max Silver and Kenny Hallaert
Max Silver and Kenny Hallaert

Justin Bonomo raised to 1,400 early and got one caller before Ole Schemion made it 6,000 to go on the button. Max Silver took a few minutes to think before putting his whole stack of about 30,000 in. When action got back to Schemion, he called.

Max Silver: {k-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Ole Schemion: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Silver was in good shape to double, but not after {q-Spades}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} flopped. He moved to exit his chair after the {6-Hearts} turn gave Schemion a full house, and the {10-Clubs} river sealed his demise.

David Peters Eliminated

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
David Peters
David Peters

Earlier today, David Peters finished in fourth place in the €100,000 Super High Roller at PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo. Peters added a six-figure payday of €630,600 (his fourth six-figure score in 2017 alone) to his massive pile of over $15,000,000 in lifetime winnings.

Peters opted to jump in the Main Event after his bustout, but this time the American giant had to bow out early. On a {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} board, Peters check-raised all in with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades} against Raffaello Locatelli. Locatelli called with {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds} and celebrated loudly after the {9-Spades} hit the river, eliminating Peters.

Schillhabel Coolers Moore for Monster Pot

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Stefan Schillhabel, pictured at a different event.
Stefan Schillhabel, pictured at a different event.

We didn't catch the action, but a preflop raising war between Stefan Schillhabel (button) and Joshua Moore (small blind) wound up with the latter all in for 95,000 and called.

Schillhabel: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}
Moore: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

It was a cooler in Schillhabel's favor, and the board ran out {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}, leaving the aces best. Moore seemed none too worried about the nasty scenario he'd run into.

"Happens," he said with a smile. "Good luck, guys."

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Celina Lin
Celina Lin

Celina Lin opened the action with a raise to 1,300. Denes Kalo called, before Francois Evard popped it to 5,000 on the button. Lin four-bet to 12,800, Kalo got out, Evard shoved around 45,000 and Lin called.

Celina Lin: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Francois Evard: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Lin was in great shape to take the almost 100k pot down and remained ahead after the board ran out {3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Spades}. The Team PokerStars Pro launched herself to 115,000, Evard was eliminated.

Delgado Decimates Cody

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody had to part with 90% of his stack after a massive clash with Vicente Delgado. With the board reading {Q-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, Cody had checked to his adversary. Delgado went all in for 40,875 total, an overbet to the 35,000 pot.

Cody tanked for several minutes and eventually made the call with {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for just second pair. It was a brave hero-call from the Brit, but Delgado held {4-Clubs}{4-Spades} for the turned set of fours to launch himself up the leaderboard. After the dust had settled, Cody was left with just 12 big blinds.

Murthy Misses Mega Draw

Nível 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Justin Bonomo enjoying a massage earlier today
Justin Bonomo enjoying a massage earlier today

As we arrived, the action was already on the turn with Justin Bonomo betting 10,000 to put Neel Murthy all in. The board was {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} and Bonomo acted out of early position. Murthy, who made the final table of the event in Dusk Till Dawn just 2 weeks ago, tanked for a bit and eventually called for his last 6,200 or so.

PlayerHandEquity on {6-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}
Justin Bonomo{6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}50%
Neel Murthy{8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}50%

With an open ended straight flush draw, the two eights and some counterfeit outs, Murthy had a lot of cards to root for.

The {K-Clubs} on the river, however, wasn't one of them. Murthy departed silently while Bonomo collected the chips.

Tedeschi Sends Chidwick to the Rail

Nível 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

Stephen Chidwick never recovered from losing a big pot early on and was just sent to the rail by Paul-Francois Tedeschi. It was the latter that opened to 550 at the end of the level and Chidwick called on the button, as did Romain Nardin in the big blind. On the {J-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop, Nardin checked and Tedeschi made it 925 to go. Chidwick shoved for his last 6,400 and Nardin folded, Tedeschi quickly called.

Stephen Chidwick: {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}
Paul-Francois Tedeschi: {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Both the {9-Hearts} turn and {Q-Clubs} river failed to improve either player and Tedescho won the pot with ace-high to eliminate Chidwick.
