Day 4 Sees Michael Gentili Bag Lead, Maimone and Mateos Bust

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Michael Gentili
Michael Gentili

In an abbreviated Day 4, the PokerStars Championship Bahamas Main Event played down to its final two tables. Michael Gentili of Canada rode two huge late hands to the chip lead, while heavyweights Nick Maimone, Adrian Mateos and Byron Kaverman were among those eliminated.

Gentili will had 3,708,000 when play resumes for the penultimate day, which will be a stack of over 150 big blinds. He had a big score in 2016 when he finished second in a $5,000 World Series of Poker event for nearly $500,000.

PokerStars Team Pro Jason Mercier has the shortest remaining stack with 340,000.

The day began with just 32 players and the plan to play four levels or down to the final 16 runners. Maimone, who won the $25,000 High Roller here last year for just short of $1 million, was the man to catch.

After notable short stacks Gaelle Baumann and Pratyush Buddiga fell early in play, Kaverman followed them out the door in a big flip against Rodrigo Cordoba. He ace-king improved to top pair against Cordoba's queens, but the latter also flopped a set to send the American packing.

PokerStars Team Pro Online's Jaime Staples busted with king-queen against ace-seven.

Meanwhile, Maimone was dropping pots left and right to Michael Vela. The former World Poker Tour champ just constantly seemed to find the right boards for his hands against Maimone, and the man known as "FU_15" found himself down to about 30 big blinds a few hours into play.

Maimone then opened with ace-king and Gentili picked up kings and squeezed after Vela called the raise. Maimone jammed and was unable to improve, moving Gentili, who started as one of the shorter stacks, into the lead.

Mateos worked a short stack for awhile but ultimately busted in 18th, leaving the remaining players on the Day 5 bubble at Level 23 (12,000/24,000/4,000).

That's when Gentili raked in another monster pot. He managed to flop a set of tens on a ten-nine-seven-queen-deuce runout, betting every street after calling Michael Bartholomew's under-the-gun open. Bartholomew, facing a bet of 400,000 on the river, went deep into the tank until the clock was called. He decided to call and saw the bad news, disgustedly showing a set of sevens and leaving a big pot to his fellow Canadian.

It was American circuit grinder Rex Clinkscales who fell to end Day 4. He got unlucky to lose with king-four of spades in the big blind to a short-stack jam by Allon Allison, who had ten-nine offsuit. Then, Clinkscales got the rest in with eights and didn't get much of a sweat against former PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champ John Dibella, who flopped two pair with ace-ten and turned a boat.

There's about an hour left in Level 23, and the tournament resumes Friday at noon local time, with the plan to play down to a final six.

Rex Clinkscales Eliminated in 17th Place ($24,640)

Rex Clinkscales
Rex Clinkscales

Rex Clinkscales pushed his remaining 328,000 into the pot, and John Dibella put him at risk from the big blind.

Dibella: {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Clinkscales: {8-Hearts}{8-Spades}

"Just an ace," Dibella requested.

He got more: {7-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}, giving him two pair. Clinkscales needed an eight or running straight cards, but those hopes were dashed when Dibella locked it up on the {10-Clubs} turn. A meaningless {k-Spades} arrived on the river, and the American grinder headed for payouts as the rest of the players prepared to bag up.

With Only Two Seconds to Go, Magnus Makes a Big Call

Nível 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Nadya Magnus
Nadya Magnus

From the cutoff, Nadya Magnus raised to 50,000. Big blind Allon Allison called and both players checked the {8-Spades}{3-Spades}{K-Spades} flop before the {J-Hearts} hit the turn. Allison checked again and Magnus bet 80,000. Allison check-raised to 250,000 and Magnus called in position.

The {4-Diamonds} completed the board and Allison announced all in. He had about 760,000 and had Magnus just covered as she had 580,000.

Magnus went deep into the tank. "Will you show me if I fold?" she asked at one point. Allison did not respond, stoically staring to a fixed point in the room.

"I have a big hand you know," Magnus continued.

At one point she shook her head and glared to the rail. "I Just don't believe you!" she said.

Several minutes past and John Dibella asked for the clock. Still no word from Allison who had his eyes hidden behind dark shades.

The floor came over and informed Magnus she had a minute left to act on her hand. As 50 seconds had passed, the floor started the countdown from ten to zero.

With just two seconds left, Magnus pounced some chips in the middle to call it off for her tournament life.

"Ahhh!" Allison shouted, "So close!"

That was enough information for Magnus who showed {J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for two pair.

"Shit! I almost had you. Just two seconds away!" Allison said.

"I think I lose" Allison said while he took one last peek at his cards.

"I need to see two hands" the dealer commented.

Allison showed {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and the pot went to Magnus.

Schein: {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

The very next hand, Mateos called all in for less (16,000). Jason Mercier called from the small blind and Ryan Riess checked his option in the big blind.

The flop came {q-Spades}{7-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. Mercier led out for 24,000 and Riess folded.

Mercier: {q-Clubs}{6-Spades}

It turns out Cordoba was well ahead and Steel need to hit one of the two remaining fours in the deck to stay alive.

Kevin Andriamahefa Eliminated in 24th Place ($19,000)

Nível 22 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Kevin Andriamahefa
Kevin Andriamahefa

Kevin Andriamahefa was the shortest stack coming back from break and shoved from middle position for exactly 200,000. Small blind Michael Bartholomew asked for a count and then reshoved upon finding out it was ten big blinds. The big blind folded right away.

Kevin Andriamahefa: {A-Spades}{2-Spades}
Michael Bartholomew: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

The {10-Spades}{K-Clubs}{7-Clubs} made Bartholomew the heavy favorite but the {5-Spades} on the turn was a scare card. The {10-Diamonds} on the river wasn't one of the cards Andriamahefa was looking for and he exited the tournament in 24th place winning $19,000. The remaining 23 players are guaranteed $24,640 from here on out.
