Mike Watson Out in Front After Day 1 of $100,000 PCA Super High Roller

Nível 8 : Blinds 2,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Mike Watson
Mike Watson

The first high roller of PokerStars Caribbean Adventure kicked off in style with Day 1 of $100,000 PCA Super High Roller, an event that has, as expected, drawn plenty of big names and produced plenty of big hands. Leading the way is Canada's Mike Watson, who bagged a stack of 830,000 ahead of Latvia's Aleksejs Ponakovs (763,000) and fellow Canadian Timothy Adams (659,000).

The first and only starting flight attracted 45 runners, though that number is sure to climb with late registration open up to the beginning of Day 2 at 12:30 p.m. local time. There were 34 players who found bags on Day 1, including Patrik Antonius, Dan Smith, David Peters, Joao Vieira, Isaac Haxton, Mikita Badziakouski, Stephen Chidwick, Chris Brewer and Sam Greenwood.

The controversial Bryn Kenney also made his way into the Day 1 field and managed to bag a stack of 241,000. Kenney was accused last year of running an online cheating ring (an allegation that he has repeatedly denied), but the second all-time money leader hasn't let that stop him from firing in some of the biggest poker events across the world.

Speaking of all-time money leaders, the pink-haired Justin Bonomo bagged a stack of 132,000 in the High Roller Event as he looks to add to his $59 million in Hendon Mob-reported earnings.

Plenty of Coolers Make Up Day 1

Kicking off the PCA return in true fashion, there were several massive pots and gutwrenching coolers during the eight hours of play on Day 1.

In just the first level of play, Ponakovs doubled up through Christoph Vogelsang in a two-pair versus full house confrontation that Vogelsang short before busting shortly after. For his part, Ponakovs also busted early on Day 1 but both players fired second bullets and made the most of them.

Aleksejs Ponakovs

Petrangelo wounded Daniel Dvoress in the same level in a boat over boat cooler that left Dvoress riding fumes before he busted and bought back in.

A few hours later, Michael Addamo fell to Jean-Noel Thorel when his top set couldn't improve against the Frenchman's flopped flush. Like many of those who fell before him, the Australian crusher bought back in and ended the day with 209,000.

Day 2 action will pick up on Jan. 23 at 12:30 p.m. on Level 9 with blinds of 3,000/6,000/6,000. The event is scheduled for three days and will play to a winner on Jan. 24, who will add heaps to his lifetime earnings.

The PokerNews live reporting team is on-site here in the sunny Bahamas and will be back tomorrow to cover all the action in $100,000 PCA Super High Roller.

Christoph Vogelsang
Christoph Vogelsang

Christoph Vogelsang was all in for around 55,000 and got called by the bigger-stacked Ignacio Moron.

Christoph Vogelsang: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Ignacio Moron: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}

"Sixes!" Nick Petrangelo said as he tried to guess Moron's hand, only to groan when he saw he was a pip off.

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and Vogelsang was spared from elimination in one of the final hands of the night.

"The ole' re-buy shove! You dog!" Petrangelo said to Vogelsang.

Davies check-called a bet of 30,000 from Thorel on the flop and then check-called another 50,000 on the {10-Hearts} turn card. The river brought the {3-Hearts} and Davies checked for the third time. Thorel ripped all in for 240,000 and Davies finally relinquished his cards.

In a three-bet pot between Ignacio Moron and Fedor Holz, there was already 150,000 in the middle with the board reading {k-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Moron announced all in from the cutoff and Holz called off his stack of 136,000 on the button.

Fedor Holz: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Ignacio Moron: {k-Spades}{4-Spades}

Moron flopped two pair to leave Holz drawing slim with his pocket queens. The river was the {8-Hearts} and Holz headed to the rail as Moron collected the chips.

Aleksejs Ponakovs opened to 7,000 in early position and Dan Smith called on the button to get the hand heads-up.

Ponakovs continued for 7,000 on the flop of {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Smith called. Ponakovs then checked on the {a-Spades} turn and Smith checked back.

The {q-Hearts} river completed the board and Ponakovs again checked. Smith bet 20,000 and his opponent check-raised to 110,000. After some deliberation, Smith called.

Ponakovs tabled the stone nuts with {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} for quads and Smith quietly mucked.

Martirosian Sends Grafton to the Rail

Sam Grafton
Sam Grafton

Artur Martirosian opened to 7,000 from under the gun and was called by Sam Grafton in the cutoff, Cary Katz on the button, and Stephen Chidwick in the big blind. The flop fell {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and the action checked around to the {10-Spades} on the turn.

Martirosian took a stab at the pot with a bet of 21,000 and only Grafton called. The {j-Diamonds} on the river put four diamonds on the board and Martirosian shipped all in. Grafton was left with just 52,000 and went into the tank for over a minute before calling it off. Martirosian tabled {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for an ace-high flush while Grafton was left with {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for a ten-high flush.

Michael Addamo
Michael Addamo

Michael Addamo opened to 4,500 from the hijack and Mike Watson called on the button before Jean-Noel Thorel three-bet to 12,000 from the big blind. Addamo four-bet to 42,000 and Watson folded. Thorel called.

Thorel checked on the {2-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop and Addamo bet a 10,000 for just a fraction of the pot. Thorel called.

Thorel checked again on the {q-Diamonds} turn and Addamo sized up to 55,000. Thorel check-raised to 110,000 and Addamo used a time bank before re-raising all in. Thorel called with a bigger stack.

Michael Addamo: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Jean-Noel Thorel: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

Both players had flopped monsters as Addamo had top set and Thorel had the nut flush. The {5-Clubs} river failed to pair the board and Addamo was eliminated after the dealer confirmed the Frenchman had him covered.

Daniel Dvoress
Daniel Dvoress

Daniel Dvoress opened to 2,500 in early position and picked up three calls along the way. The flop came {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades} and the action checked to Nick Petrangelo who bet 3,000. Ben Heath stepped aside and Dan Smith called from the big blind. Dvoress check-raised to 13,000 and both Petrangelo and Smith called.

The {5-Hearts} paired the board on the turn and Smith checked again. Dvoress dropped in a bet of 15,000 and only Petrangelo called this time. The river was the {j-Clubs} and Dvoress counted out a bet of 27,500. Petrangelo ripped all in for 220,500 and Dvoress wasted little time before calling.

Petrangelo tabled {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for a rivered full house while Dvoress was forced to show his {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a smaller full house. Dvoress was left with just 11,000 after the hand and Petrangelo finished him off on the very next hand.

Ponakovs Flops Boat to Fatally Wound Vogelsang

Nível 1 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Christoph Vogelsang
Christoph Vogelsang

Aleksejs Ponakovs opened to 2,500 from under the gun and Christoph Vogelsang three-bet to 7,500 from the next seat. Action folded back to Ponakovs, who four-bet to 20,000. Vogelsang called.

Ponakovs bet 14,000 on the {3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{10-Spades} flop and Vogelsang called. Ponakovs then bet 20,000 on the {a-Hearts} turn and Vogelsang raised to 60,000. Ponakovs three-bet to 110,000 and Vogelsang four-bet jammed with around a starting stack. Ponakovs called with a slightly larger stack.

Aleksejs Ponakovs: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Christoph Vogelsang: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}

Vogelsang was drawing to just two aces against the flopped full house of Ponakovs and the {8-Clubs} then bricked off on the river to leave Vogelsang short and to earn Ponakovs the first double of the day. Vogelsang wasn't able to spin it up and was seen leaving the tournament area a few hands later.
