Brian Altman Leads Record-Breaking EPT Prague Main Event After Day 2

Nível 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Brian Altman
Brian Altman

Brian Altman finished the day as chip leader with 704,100 with exactly 200 players advancing to Day 3. The American, who currently resides in Canada, won his seat for Prague in a €320 satellite on PokerStars. The 26-year-old has been to several PokerStars Caribbean Adventures, scoring a min-cash this January, but he rarely competes in mainland Europe. His best live result to date was a fifth-place finish in a Borgata tournament last month.

Gustav Nordh is in second place after bagging up 584,000, followed by Omar Lakhdari in third place with 568,000. Lakhdari, the Frenchman, flew in from final tabling the World Poker Tour National Paris event earlier this week. Stephen Graner, who finished sixth out of 7,977 entries in the Millionaire Maker at the World Series of Poker this summer for $273,854, accumulated 558,200 in chips.

The 2014 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event closed registration at the beginning of play today and the final numbers were confirmed with a record-breaking 1,107 players. This was made up of 342 entrants on Day 1a, 752 on Day 1b, and 13 who bought in at the start of Day 2, meaning the record for this event was beaten by exactly 100 entries. Those numbers generated a huge prize pool of €5.3 million, and the champion stands to win €969,000. The runner-up will receive €582,720, with third place set to get €410,190.

A total of 64 countries were represented in the field, with 98 players coming from Russia, just ahead of the Germans who were also strongly represented with 94 participants. The United Kingdom maintained last year's third position with 77, meaning all top three standings were exactly the same as one year ago. The home country was represented by 33 players, and 42 out of the 50 European countries had players in the field — a true testament to the widespread popularity of the EPT in its 11th season.

With close to €1 million for the eventual winner this year, here is a look at how that compares to previous years:

After six 75-minute levels of play, the 600 Day 1 survivors, plus the extra 13 who bought in before Day 2 kicked off, have been reduced to just 200.

One of the first players to fall was Chris Moorman, who had a big stack right up until the end of Day 1b, but was reduced to a sub-20 big blind stack when he ran kings into aces near the close of play. Moorman busted when he opened and then shoved with the {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} over Sergii Baranov’s three-bet with the {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds}, and it was all over when Baranov spiked his four on the flop.

Some of the other big names who failed to make it through the day included reigning WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson and Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Theo Jorgensen, and Marcin Horecki. Also eliminated were Martin Staszko, Kevin MacPhee, Jack Salter, Dermot Blain, and Dimitar Danchev.

Overall though, it was a good day for Team PokerStars Pro. The squad will be represented on Day 3 by Liv Boeree (179,000), Vanessa Selbst (139,000), Eugene Katchalov (116,300), George Danzer (98,700), and Johnny Lodden (56,600). Flying the flag for Team PokerStars Pro Online will be Mickey Petersen (168,000) and Isaac Haxton (66,500).

Some of the other notables who have made it through to Day 3 included Rhys Jones (411,900), Artem Metalidi (357,900), Tamer Kamel (352,900), Simon Ravnsbaek (352,800), Davidi Kitai (342,300), Shannon Shorr (322,200), Mustapha Kanit (322,000), 2013 EPT Prague runner-up Georgios Sotiropoulos (311,800), Thomas Muehlocker (282,100), and Sam Grafton (273,100).

Play resumes tomorrow at noon local time with five 90-minute levels scheduled. The PokerNews Live Reporting team will bring you all the drama of the money bubble as only 159 of the remaining 200 players will be paid. That means there will be a bunch of unlucky players leaving empty handed just shy of a min-cash worth €8,970.

Be sure to join us then, and in the meantime check out the following video with Eugene Katchalov:

Kanit Wins Huge

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Mustapha Kanit
Mustapha Kanit

Mustapha Kanit was stacking a mountain of chips when we passed his table and he gave us some vague details on how he had just acquired them. Upon further investigation and with the help of a Russian blogger, it all became apparent.

Kanit opened to 4,500 and Mickey Petersen as well as one further player called. Sergii Baranov squeezed to 24,000 and Kanit as well as the other player called to see the three-way flop of {9-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {7-}. Baranov bet 28,000 and only Kanit called to see another {X-Clubs} on the turn. Baranov moved all in for 140,000 chips with {K-Hearts} {J-Hearts} and Kanit had an easy call with {A-Clubs} {3-Clubs} for the nut flush.

This brings the Italian up to 450,000 and he is the new chip leader.

Naji Sends Jacobson to the Rail

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Martin Jacobson
Martin Jacobson

A new chip leader has arrived at the table of Gerald Karlic and it is Gustav Nordh from Sweden. His fellow countryman and 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Martin Jacobson however has just been sent to the rail. Karlic opened to 3,200, Jacobson moved all in for 26,000 and Abdo Naji called from two seats over.

Karlic folded {7-Spades} {7-Hearts} and Jacobson was drawing very slim with {7-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} against the {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} of the Lebanese. There would be no miracle at all and the Swede left the tournament just before the end of level 12.

Massive Heater for Omar Lakhdari

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jack Salter runs into Aces
Jack Salter runs into Aces

Within two consecutive hands, Omar Lakhdari has knocked out three players. In the first hand, Yulius Sepman raised to 3,600 and Lakhdari moved all in from the small blind. Alexander Lukyanov called all in for less out of the big blind and Sepman was in the think tank. The Frenchman joked "maybe two seat open" and was getting somewhat impatient. Ultimately Sepman as shortest stack called off:

Sepman: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}
Lakhdari: {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds}
Lukyanov: {K-Clubs} {K-Spades}

The board ran out {3-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} and Lakhdari scooped the pot. He wasn't done stacking the chips yet when Jack Salter raised to 3,500 and Liv Boeree called. Lakhdari grabbed a lot of red T-1,000 chips and raised but didn't even know how much it was. Salter asked the dealer and it would be 13,000. Lakhdari kept talking and Salter eventually four-bet to 32,200.

Boeree quickly got out of the way and the Frenchman said "let me see," referring to the remaining stack of the Brit. Salter had another 37,200 behind and Lakhdari then grabbed a stack of blue T-5,000 chips with the words "okay, bon appetit" and out his opponent all in.

Salter called all in with {A-Spades} {J-Clubs} and ran straight into the {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} of the Frenchman. There was some hope on the {Q-Diamonds} {10-Spades} {3-Hearts} flop, but the gutshot never arrived with the {2-Diamonds} turn and the {8-Hearts} river completing the board. Boeree said in table chat that she folded pocket jacks.

Van Dijk Down and Out

Nível 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Daphne van Dijk
Daphne van Dijk

Daphne van Dijk is no more, her tournament is over after a day of hard work. The Dutch online qualifier started out with 51,700 today but never got anything going really.

Van Dijk lost a pot with kings on an ace-high board early on. She got away from it, she told us, but it still cost her some chips.

Right before the last break she lost another big pot. Someone in front of her opened and with {A-}{K-} she three bet. Her opponent called and lead into her on {9-}{7-}{7-}. Van Dijk called, and both checked the {9-} on the turn. The river was a {Q-} and her opponent bet out chips worth half Van Dijk's stack. With the break well underway she eventually decided to fold.

Van Dijk was down to nine big blinds when she found {10-}{10-} in the hijack. She shoved all in and her neighbor in the cutoff made the call. Van Dijk got the bad news soon enough, her opponent had aces and that hand wouldn't get cracked.

Van Dijk played her second EPT Main Event here in Prague, let's see where the joyful qualifier pops up next.

Zaichenko Busts ElkY

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

It was a dire day for Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, as the French Team PokerStars Pro dropped all the way down to his last five big blinds and then moved all in after a raise of start-of-the-day chip leader Andrey Zaichenko. The pocket jacks of the Russian held in the showdown against {K-} {7-} and ElkY quickly headed out of the tournament area.

Boeree Versus Salter

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Liv Boeree
Liv Boeree

We arrived at the table with the flop already showing {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}.

Jack Salter had checked from the big blind as did Liv Boeree from middle position. Their opponent in the hijack made it 3,700 to go as the decision fell back on Salter. He then raised it up to 10,300 which was called moments later by Boeree as well as the original better.

The {10-Diamonds} saw all three players check before the dealer produced the {6-Spades} on the river. Salter paused for a moment before betting out 13,800. Boeree then contemplated her next move for a minute before sliding out a raise to 45,000. The player in the hijack instantly mucked his hand with the play falling back on Salter. Two minutes into his tank the player in the hijack called time and a tournament director made their way to the table.

Salter clock was running down and with ten seconds to go buried his head into his arms as his time ran out. His hand was mucked and the pot was pushed over to Boeree. She then tabled her {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for top pair as she began stacking up her chips.

Chen Out With Aces (to 7-9 Suited)

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Andrew Chen
Andrew Chen

We ran into Andrew Chen in the hallway and he told us the story of his bust out upon request.

Chen told us that he opened under the gun with a 70,000 stack to 2,800 holding pocket aces without the ace of hearts. Tamer Kamel two seats over made it 6,100 and action folded back to Chen. Chen, who won the EPT London High Roller not too long ago for £394,200 and chopped the Master Classics of Poker Main Event in Amsterdam for another €190,000 last month, four bet to 16,800. Kamel made the call.

The flop came {10-}{8-}{3-} with two hearts and Chen shoved all in for about 53,000, expecting Kamer not to fold a hand like kings anyway. Tamer indeed did not fold, but didn't turn up with a big over pair as one might have expected. Chen's aces had to dodge a lot of outs as Kamer showed {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for the open ended and straight draw.

The {K-} on the turn didn't do much, but the {J-} on the river did. Chen made his way out of the tournament area, Kamel gathered all the chips.
