Guillaume Darcourt Leads the Charge. En Garde!

Guillaume Darcourt
Guillaume Darcourt

A total of 591 players registered for the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville Main Event during the first two days; 199 on Day 1a and 392 on Day 1b. There might just be some latecomers registering today, you'll be able to get a seat up till the start of Day 2.

Leading the charge is French poker veteran Guillaume Darcourt with a whopping 167,800 in chips. As the tournament continues in level 9 today (400/800), that translates to 210 big blinds. PokerStars Team Pro's Jan Heitmann (126,100/158 bb) and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (123,500/154 bb) also amassed big stacks on Day 1.

The money won't be reached today, a champion won't be crowned. That makes today a day of pure surviving and gathering chips. We'll be sure to keep an eye on the shorter stacks as they'll be trying to get things going early on. Isaac [Removed:250] with 5,500 (7 bb) in chips is the shortest to start, while familiar faces like Marius Pospiech (8,600/11b), Olof Haglund (10,400/13bb), and Gaelle Baumann (13,700/17 bb) will also have to get into action early on. Eugene Katchalov, who finished runner up in this event here last year, ended Day 1 with a mere 16,000 (20bb) in chips and will have to get busy soon as well.

While last years winner Sotirios Koutoupas was eliminated in one of the last levels yesterday, three former Deauville champions are still in. PokerStars Team Pro Jake Cody, who won this event back in 2010 (€875,000), brings 53,000 in chips. Lucien Cohen, winner in 2011 for €880,000, bagged 85.600. Both of them are topped by Remi Castaignon who won EPT Deauville in 2013 for €770,000, bagged 91.800 late last night.

Six 75-minute levels will be played on Day 2, with no reason for a dinner break. After every two levels there'll be a 20-minute break. Bagging and tagging should start again around 8:15 pm local time. These six levels played today will mark the last of the 75-minute era, from tomorrow onwards the levels will be 90 minutes.

Katchalov Doubles Again

Nível 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Action folded to Amir Mozaffarian in the small blind and the German player raised it up to 2,400. PokerStars Team Pro Eugene Katchalov in the big blind made the call.

{10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Spades}

Mozaffarian bet out 1,800 and Katchalov raised to 4,500 after a few seconds of thinking. Mozaffarian wasn't backing down though and three bet to 10,600. Katchalov four bet to 16,700 and Mozaffarian instantly pushed all in. Katchalov called it off for 33,800 total.

Katchalov confidently turned over {9-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} for flopped trips. Mozaffarian showed {J-Spades}{3-Spades} for the flush draw (and backdoor full house draw).

The {2-Diamonds} on the turn was of no harm for Katchalov, and neither was the {6-Diamonds} on the river. Katchalov doubled again and plays well over average now after starting out today as one of the shorter stacks in the tournament.

Castaignon Busts Lhommeau to Join Big Stacks

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Remi Castaignon thriving in Deauville
Remi Castaignon thriving in Deauville

Damien Lhommeau opened to 2,500 from the button and called the three-bet of Remi Castaignon to 5,800, witnessing a heads-up flop of {10-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {3-Clubs}. A continuation bet by Castaignon was called and Lhommeau then raised the {Q-Clubs} turn from 12,800 to 40,000 with only little behind to commit himself.

Castaignon shoved with {Q-Spades} {10-Diamonds} and Lhommeau was drawing dead with {A-Clubs} {J-Spades}. The river didn't matter anymore and one of the three remaining EPT Deauville champions is suddenly among the biggest stacks in the room. Other notables that busted were Ihar Soika and Erwann Pecheux.

Clash of Champions

Nível 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier could highlight any feature table
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier could highlight any feature table

With 39 tables in use at the start of Day 2 and so many big names remaining - including 17 EPT champions - it was always likely that the random seat draw was going to work its magic and provide us with more than one 'feature' table.

So whilst those at table eight may have made their way to the main stage to be broadcast on EPTLive, given that they were the designated feature table, out in the field there was plenty of outstanding tables to cast an eye over. The PokerStars Blog took a closer look.

No Three-Time Champion This Time Around

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Victoria Coren-Mitchell
Victoria Coren-Mitchell

Minutes after the third level of the day started, Vicky Coren-Mitchell had the all in triangle in front of her after shoving for about 13,000 in chips from the cutoff. Dimitar Danchev in the small blind was the one calling.

Coren-Mitchell was looking for help with her {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} as Danchev had brought {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} for the confrontation. The {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{6-Spades} board at no point made things exciting, and Coren-Mitchell made her way to the exit.

"It was nice playing with you. Have a nice day" she said gracefully while standing up to make her way out the door.

Domination Nation! 242 French in Main Event (41% of Field)

Nível 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

More than 41% of the 592-strong field in the EPT Deauville Main Event come from France. There were 242 French players, way ahead of any other country. Italy is number 2 here in Deauville with 34 players. There are 32 Russians, 31 Brits, 30 Germans and 21 Dutch.

The following countries have only one representative so we hope people are being friendly to them: Argentina, Austria, Azerbaijan, Chile, Egypt, Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, Mexico, Monaco and Tunisia. Others with 2+ players are: Israel, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, Hungary, Canada, China, Ireland, Norway, Luxembourg, Serbia and Switzerland.

Czuczor Goes from Zero to Hero

Evangelos Tsairis
Evangelos Tsairis

Within the last two consecutive hands before the break, Marton Czuczor went from a short stack to an above average stack when doubling and tripling up. First he open shoved for 25,900 with {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts} and won the flip against {A-Spades} {J-Spades} when the {7-Diamonds} on the flop made things clear.

The last hand before the break he raised, Arvydas Merfeldas three-bet and Evangelos Tsairis four-bet to 14,100 from the button. Czuczor moved all in for 55,800 and Merfeldas reshoved for 131,100. Tsairis asked for a quick count of the second all in and then called.

Czuczor: {A-Clubs} {A-Hearts}
Merfeldas: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}
Tsairis: {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}

The board ran out {4-Hearts} {8-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {3-Spades} {8-Diamonds} and gave Czuczor a huge spin and great feeling to head into the break with.

Visser Doubles With Kings

Nível 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Ruben Visser
Ruben Visser

Bartolomeo-Fulvio Tato opened for 4,400 from middle position. Right next to him was EPT London champ Ruben Visser and he made it 10,200 to go. Action folded back to Tato who added the 5,800 to make the call.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and the Italian checked to Visser. Visser bet out 12,300 and Tato made a min raise to 24,600. Visser shoved for 51,900 and Tato made the call after some tanking.

Visser showed {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} giving Tato the news he had some catching up to do with his {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}. Help wouldn't come as the {7-Hearts} on the turn and {5-Diamonds} on the river were proper blanks.
