Guillaume Darcourt Tops Day 1B To Lead Into Day 2 Of Deauville Main Event

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Guillaume Darcourt
Guillaume Darcourt

The Deauville leg of the Season 11 European Poker Tour sponsored by PokerStars.fr continued Monday with the second Day 1 flight, and many of the big names on the circuit participated in what would eventually be a total of 390 entrants. After eight levels of play it was Guillaume Darcourt from France who bested the remaining 227 players with 167,800 chips.

Alessandro Valli from Italy finished the day in second place with 154,800, closely followed by Andrius Bielskis with 150,200. Team PokerStars Pro Jan Heitmann from Germany bagged up a top 10 stack of 126,100 chips.

There were several former EPT Main Event winners competing on Day 1b including four former Deauville champions. Defending champion Sotirios Koutoupas just failed to make it through when he ran pocket threes into kings in the last level. Remi Castaignon, who won EPT Deaville in 2013, and Lucien Cohen, who won in 2011, ended up on the same table towards the end of play and both managed to bag up chips with 91,800 and 85,600, respectively. Jake Cody entered after the dinner break and ran up that stack to 53,000 chips in the last two levels.

Last season’s EPT Grand Final winner Sylvain Loosli was eliminated shortly before the end of Level 8 when he shoved his short stack holding {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts} but ran into {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and couldn’t improve. Vicky Coren-Mitchell, the only two-time EPT winner, managed to hold on with 22,200 when the day closed.

2008 PCA Main Event champion and Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier outshined the other previous champions, putting in a strong performance by finishing the day on 123,500. Grospellier proved a master of extracting maximum value several times when he flopped a big hand with an unexpected holding against opponents with strong hands, and he would do the same when he finally cracked the 100k mark. Holding {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} on the turn of a board reading {3-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{2-Spades}{8-Clubs} Grospellier bet 6,600 into a pot of 12,000 and picked up one caller in Stephan Faig. The {a-Diamonds} hit the river and a bet of 9,200 again got called before Faig’s hand hit the muck.

Some other notables who navigated the Day 1b minefield include Sergio Aido (97,600), Ilan Boujenah (90,900), Michael Tureniec (90,600), Thomas Butzhammer (87,400), Kevin MacPhee (86,300), Govert Metaal (81,600), Marcin Wydrowski (79,500), PokerStars Team Online's Gabriel Nassif (74,700), PokerStars Team Pro Julien Brecard (61,800) and Vladimir Troyanovskiy (54,300).

While those players can look forward to another day in the Main Event with their dreams of a big pay-day still alive, some of those who failed to make it through and go home empty handed include Sofia Lovgren, Georgios Karakousis, Jean-Noel Thorel, Alex Goulder, Davidi Kitai and Artem Litvinov.

Day 1a saw Nathan Gozlan top the leaderboard with 148,500 heading a field of 199, and with the board showing 392 entrants Monday it created a total of 591 entrants. Gozlan will return second in chips, giving France the top two spots. Registration remains open until the start of Day 2, but that number still represents a slight downward trend since the peak of 2011 when 891 players entered.

Action resumes Tuesay at 12 p.m. local time when the two starting flights will combine and the remaining 335 players continue the battle it out to be crowned EPT Deauville Champion 2015. The PokerNews reporting team will be there to bring you all the live updates from the tournament floor as well as exclusive videos and interviews from Remko Rinkema and details on the feature table live stream.

No Back-To-Back Title for Koutoupas

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Sotirios Koutoupas
Sotirios Koutoupas

"I just busted," Sotirios Koutoupas said on his way out of the tournament area. He then quickly walked back to grab the iPad that he had forgotten below his seat and then told us what happened.

Evangelos Tsaris had opened to 1,400 and was called by two opponents before the EPT 10 Deauville champion moved all in for 8,800 out of the big blind. Only Tsaris called with pocket kings and Koutoupas couldn't find a miracle with pocket threes.

The Greek was still smiling even upon elimination though. "He is a friend," Koutoupas added, referring to his countryman.

It's Getting Cold on Table 13

Nível 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Vladimir Troyanovskiy
Vladimir Troyanovskiy

Rob Strong told us about a big hand he played with Vladimir Troyanovskiy two to his right.

Troyanovskiy opened to 1,100 from the hijack in that hand (in the level before this one), and his neighbor in the cutoff made the call. Rob Strong on the button squeezed to 3,500 and just Troyanovskiy made the call, the cutoff folded.

Troyanovskiy check called a 4,400 bet on {A-}{K-}{8-} with two clubs, and check called another 8,600 on the {5-Hearts} turn. The river was an off suit {4-} and Troyanovskiy check called 14,400 from Strong.

Strong tabled pocket aces for top set, Troyanovskiy mucked {A-}{K-} for top two pair.

Five Interesting Facts About Deauville and the European Poker Tour

Nível 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Casino Barrière de Deauville
Casino Barrière de Deauville

Although one may think that the past eight editions of the European Poker Tour in Deauville taught us everything there is to know about this cold spot of Normandy, the first European leg of the circuit in 2015 has already give us several interesting stories to tell.

Sheriff Metaal Fires Three Bullets with the Bullets

Nível 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Govert Metaal
Govert Metaal

Rogue villain Thomas Butzhammer in the cutoff entered the town of Metaal coming in for a raise to 600. Action was soon on sherif Govert Metaal in the small blind. The experienced Dutch wielder, with fedora and sunglasses as per usual, glanced at his cards and reached for his holster. He grabbed his ammunition, and fired in a three bet to 1,400. Metaal's neighbor folded, Butzhammer wasn't going anywhere and looked Metaal up.

The innocent bystander in the dealer seat put out a flop of {5-Hearts}{J-Hearts}{9-Spades} and let the two duel it out again. Metaal gave another swirl on the cylinder, cocked the hammer, and fired 1,600. Butzhammer made the call.

The {Q-Spades} fell on the turn and Metaal clearly wasn't done yet. He loaded another round and fired 3,800. Butzhammer wasn't backing down and called.

The {6-Diamonds} completed the board and Metaal grabbed a second revolver to dual wield the river. Beng! Beng! Beng! and 6,600 in chips ended up in the middle. Butzhammer had already suffered so much damage, but he wasn't down just yet. Butzhammer looked physically hurt but had some energy left to toss in a single 25 chip to call. Soon enough the German villain fell down dead on the ground after Metaal showed {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}.

As Butzhammer mucked, Metaal put his revolver back in his holster and started stacking. As he looked from left to right, you could almost hear the classic cowboy tune in the background. "Nice hand" said the gunned down Butzhammer.

Miss Read for Khoroshenin

Nível 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Oleksii Khoroshenin
Oleksii Khoroshenin

Tobias Peters was kind enough to fill us in on the details of a rather big hand which was going on over at table 37.

According to Peters, a player in early position opened to 550 and his neighbor called. Aleksii Khoroshenin over called from the cut off and now Sören Ingwart Vöhrs in the big blind squeezed to 2,500. All players called to grow a sizable pot.

The flop came {3-Spades}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs} and Vöhrs bet out 5,500 to follow up on his pre flop aggression. Just Khoroshenin in position made the call.

The turn came the {2-Hearts} and Vöhrs checked to Khoroshenin. The EPT Vienna champ slid out a bet, though we're not entirely sure how much it was. Vöhrs check raised all in (for what appeared over 30,000) and Khoroshenin needed a bit of time to make up his mind. Eventually he made the call, only to find out he needed quite some help to eliminate his German foe as Vöhrs showed the goods with {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. Khoroshenin had kind of gotten out of line with his {9-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

The {2-Spades} on the river was a card as meaningless as they could come, and Khoroshenin was beaten down to about 10 big blinds.

Brummelhuis Busts

A middle positioned player opened to 500 and action folded around to 2013 World Series of Poker November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis on the button. He made it 1,300 to go and the small blind folded. Konstantinos Nanos called from the big blind and the original raiser came along as well.

The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and action checked to Brummelhuis. He continued for 1,450, Nanos called, and the original raiser folded. The {5-Spades} on the turn prompted checks from both players, allowing the {9-Hearts} to finish the board. Nanos bet 3,775 on the river and action was back on Brummelhuis. He thought for a moment before moving all in over the top for what looked to be around 8,000 total. Nanos immediately dropped calling chips past the betting line.

Brummelhuis showed {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} but was ultimately bested by Nanos' {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts} for a turned full house. Brummelhuis hit the rail and Nanos boosted his stack up to 43,000.
