Previous Records Demolished as Stephen Chidwick Leads Largest EPT High Roller Ever

Day 1 of the €10,300 High Roller from the European Poker Tour stop in Barcelona shocked everyone, but in one of the best ways possible.

The turnout for the event proved to be record-breaking. In fact, "record-breaking" might even be an understatement. The event absolutely demolished all previous records for a high roller event on the EPT, and there's still time for players to enter for the first time or fire off a second bullet if they lost out on the first — registration and reentry will be open until 15 minutes before the start of Day 2, which happens Tuesday at 12 p.m. local time.

At the end of play for the night, the tournament board read that there were 378 total entries. We'll have more information on the breakdown of the field in terms of unique players and number of reentries when registration closes tomorrow, but know that just under 200 players emerged from the wreckage on Day 1, and the field did nothing but deliver all day long.

The previous record for a €10,300 high roller on the EPT was 181 entries, coming from last season's Vienna stop that attracted 141 unique players and 40 reentries. At last season's PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, which was held back in January, the $25,500 High Roller drew 198 unique players with 49 reentries for a total of 247. That should help put into perspective just how big this event truly is.

Leading the way into Day 2 was Stephen Chidwick. He bagged up 299,000 in chips, but he's not alone with a big stack moving into the second day of play. Dan Smith (292,600) and Jason Mercier (291,400) are nipping at his heels, and then Alexander Roumeliotis (266,300), Niall Farrell (235,800), Fedor Holz (216,300), Steve O'Dwyer (213,400), and Vanessa Selbst (205,000) are all over 200,000 as well. If that's not an audience-grabbing list of notables topping the pack, then we don't know what is.

Thomas Muehloecker, the defending champion of this event, got off to an impressive start and bagged up 225,500. The man he had to beat heads up, Daniel Negreanu, didn't show up today and doesn't plan to, stating on EPT Live that he wasn't going to play and has other plans for tomorrow.

Needless to say, it was a very exciting day of poker, and there will be plenty more tomorrow on Day 2.

The action begins at 12 p.m. local time, and you can bet every last chip that PokerNews will be here grinding just as hard as the players on the felt in order to bring the coverage straight to your screens. Official chip counts will be posted once received from the tournament staff, and while you wait for Day 2, enjoy the following Ivey Stories video with a great tale from Joe Stapleton:

Selbst Wins Three-Way All In

Nível 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Mark Teltscher opened the cutoff for 3,200, and his next door neighbor Jeff Rossiter shoved from the button for what we believe was 27,200. Vanessa Selbst in the small blind over shoved for 67,000, and Teltscher had the decision after Metaal folded his big blind. Teltscher thought for some time, and called in the end.

Mark Teltscher: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Vanessa Selbst: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Jeff Rossiter: {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Selbst and Teltscher were already talking about the situation, with Selbst complimenting Teltscher sincerely on the good call he had made.

"Well, that's a good flop for you" said Teltscher after the first three community cards appeared: {8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}. The {3-Clubs} on the turn was a blank, and the {A-Diamonds} didn't do much of anything for anyone either.

Jeff Rossiter made his exit, Teltscher still has some chips left but is short now.

Flush over Flush for Polk, Out (Again)

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Doug Polk
Doug Polk

It isn't Doug Polk's day so far. At the beginning of the day, he and Scott Seiver were talking about a side bet Polk made with Dan Smith about Smith not winning the €2,000 side event. Well Dan Smith díd win, and that supposedly costed Polk a good bundle of money. Today isn't a cheap day so far either, he just busted for the second time.

The biggest hit to his stack he took in a flush over flush situation. With a board of {A-Spades}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} Polk bet out 15,600 with about 34,000 behind. His opponent was Anatoly Filatov who took his time to make his decision. Eventually he pushed a 48,000 stack forward, and now the real tanking began. Polk thought for a long time, and eventually couldn't get himself to fold.

Polk made the call and was immediately shown the ace-high flush: {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. Polk had {7-Hearts}{8-Hearts} but that hand was clearly no good.

With just 1,475 left, he found himself all in the next hand. He pushed, found a caller in Candido Goncalves, and Filatov isolated to 5,500. One player made the call, and action was back on Goncalves who resqueezed to 26,100. Filatov folded, and so did the other player (showing {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}).

Polk showed his {A-Clubs}{3-Spades} and was up against {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. "Oh so nice!" Polk said after the {A-Hearts}{4-Spades}{9-Diamonds} on the flop. He spoke too soon though, the {K-Spades} hit the turn and he was out of the tournament indefinitely. The {Q-Clubs} completed the board, and Polk left the table, somehow still with a big smile on his face.

He walked to a nearby table with Ryan Fee on it; "What? You're out? Again?" Fee said. "Yeah I suck", Polk replied, "Yeah you suck!" Fee laughed, "And you can quote me on that" said Fee to us. Do with that what you want, but Polk can go home, he's not able to re enter another time.

Govert Metaal limped in from early position, and Vitaly Lunkin isolated right behind him from middle position. All other players folded, but Metaal wasn't calling or folding, he had a different trick up his sleeve. Metaal limp reraised and Lunkin called in position.

The flop came {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and Metaal bet out 3,500. Lunkin raised it up to 8,225 and Metaal made the call. Metaal check called another 10,400 on the {K-Clubs}-turn, and the {Q-Diamonds} completed the board. Metaal pushed all in and Lunkin snap called for his remaining 25,200.

Metaal was pretty confident with his {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}, but those two beautiful cards would soon be put face down into the muck as Lunkin showed {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}.

"Back to back? He's starting good"

Nível 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Thomas Muhlocker in the Super High Roller earlier this festival

Dan Shak opened the button for 800, and Sven Reichardt three bet to 2,400 from the small blind. Thomas Muehloecker in the big blind cold four bet to 4,500 and action was back on Shak. The American High Roller, who cashed €138,600 for his 8th place finish in the €50,000 Super High Roller earlier this festival, five bet to 15,000. Reichardt folded, but Muehloecker made the call after some thinking.

The flop came {K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{K-Hearts} and Muehloecker checked to Shak. The dealer thought Shak checked behind and was ready to burn and turn, but Shak had announced all in and reminded the dealer of that. Muehloecker called instantly by putting in some 100 chips. "Ace king?" he asked while turning over {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}. It was no ace king for Shak, he had just {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} and needed to improve.

The {7-Clubs} on the turn and {J-Hearts} on the river were blanks, and after a little bit of counting, it was clear that Muehloecker had Shak covered.

"You didn't like the flop huh?" said Shak, "No, not too much" answered Muehloecker with a small smile.

"Back to back?" laughed table mate Govert Metaal, "He's starting good!"

"You Gotta Report This Hand" - Full House Versus Quads

Nível 2 : 100/200, 25 ante
Niall Farrell
Niall Farrell

Jason Les called us over and told us about a hand he thought was worth reporting on. Well we agree, as pots where a top full house is no good, don't come around all that often.

Niall Farrell opened, and received a call from Paul Vas Nunes before Denis Kipnis squeezed. Both Farrell and Vas Nunes made the call and it was three-way to the flop.

Farrell and Vas Nunes checked to Kipnis who made his continuation bet on {6-}{6-}{Q-}. They would go three-way to the turn as both Farrell and Vas Nunes called yet again.

All three of them checked the {8-} on the turn, and the {Q-} fell on the river to complete the board. Farrell checked again, and Vas Nunes bet out. Kipnis folded, but Farrell had other plans. The FTOPS winner squeezed all in and Vas Nunes made the call.

Vas Nunes had not too bad a hand with {Q-}{10-}, but it would soon go into the muck as Farrell showed {6-}{6-}.

Will We See a Record-Breaking High Roller?

The high-stakes action from Barcelona isn't over just yet. The €5,300 Main Event may be moving on to Day 4 with 103 players left from a record-breaking field, but today marks the start of the always impressive €10,300 High Roller.

After the €50,000 Super High Roller and €5,300 Main Event both smashed records, there are high hopes for this event. Last year's installment attracted a total of 180 entries — 138 unique players with 42 reentries. The event was won by Thomas Muehloecker, who walked away with a big, bad €390,700 first-place prize. One shouldn't doubt that this event could easily surpass 200 entries this year.

Muehloecker's win was especially remarkable after he came back from a 6-1 chip deficit at the start of heads-up play against none other than Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu. Where many people would've simply gambled a lot and essentially give up, Muehloecker stayed on the grind and slowly worked his way back into the match before eventually claiming victory. To relive Muehlloecker's win, you can read through last year's live reporting coverage of the event.

Day 1 will begin at 1 p.m. local time, with each player allowed one reentry. Registration will remain open until 15 minutes before the start of play on Day 2, and players will each start with 50,000 in tournament chips.

The coverage starts soon, so stay tuned.

While you wait, check out this little fun video with last year's runner-up. In it, Negreanu addresses the challenge issued to him by Doug Polk about playing $25/$50 online cash:
