The first major title of the 2022 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) presented by Monte-Carlo Casino® at the Monte-Carlo Sporting complex on the French Riviera has been awarded. Out of a field of 83 entries in Event #4: €10,200 Mystery Bounty, French entrepreneur Jean-Noel Thorel prevailed in heads-up against Spanish poker pro Sergi Reixach to win his third ever victory on the live poker circuit.

Thorel and Reixach were responsible for the lion's share of the eliminations in the money and shared the biggest portion of the €390,100 in cash and €415,000 in Mystery Bounty prizes. Reixach as well as fourth-place finisher Imad Derwiche drew the golden envelope with the highest bounty of €100,000 while Thorel and Sam Greenwood scored an instant payday of €50,000.

Only the top 11 spots earned prizes for their efforts. Among the players in the money were Belarmino De Souza, EPT regular and recent 2022 Irish Open champion Steve O'Dwyer, Rodrigo Selouan, and Timothy Adams. French poker pro Johan "YoH ViraL" Guilbert was eliminated on the bubble to let the bounty bonanza commence shortly thereafter.

The final day of the tournament got back underway with 50 players out of 71 entries remaining and another dozen entries were added in the first hour of play thanks to the extended late registration. Only one of the last minute additions eventually made it into the money as Japan's Hiroshi Nishiyama was the first player to take home a cash prize.

All other hopefuls fell by the wayside as the field raced towards the money bubble. Among the casualties were also the Day 1 big stacks Ben Heath, Luciano De Hollanda, Kayhan Mokri, Alex Kulev and Guram Andronikashvili. They all bowed out much earlier than they were hoping for with Heath falling on the final three tables during a frantic period of the tournament.

Heath first doubled his short stack through Dimitar Danchev only to then come up second-best to Iman Derwiche. For Danchev, there was no happy end either as he was knocked out soon after. On the final three tables, Sam Greenwood surged into the lead with back-to-back eliminations when he turned a straight flush to knock out Motoyoshi Okamura and then flopped the nut flush to felt Pavel Veksler.

However, the Canadian then went on a slippery slope and became the short stack close to the money bubble only to bounce back. The two German High Roller regulars Claas Segebrecht and Dietrich Fast were eliminated just shy of the cash bubble and Johan Guilbert became the bubble boy after a clash with Sergi Reixach.

Once in the money, it didn't take long to award the first two Mystery Bounties with values of €10,000 and €50,000. The loudest celebration then came from Derwiche when he drew one of the two golden €100,000 Bounty envelopes by knocking out Timothy Adams, who he had previously joked to be gunning for.

From there on, Reixach went on a rampage and scored the next three eliminations including Lukasz Szymon Grossmann (€10,000), Rodrigo Selouan (€25,000) and Greenwood (€35,000). Jean-Noel Thorel then sent Steve O'Dwyer to the rail and immediately drew a €50,000 Mystery Bounty prize on his first attempt. Reixach and Thorel split the next €15,000 bounty when their ace-kings held against the ten-eight suited of Derwiche.

Reixach suffered several setbacks and his commanding lead was cut short thanks to the emergence of Thorel and Belarmino De Souza. It was then Brazilian De Souza who had his aces cracked by the five-four suited of Reixach, who drew the second €100,000 envelope and entered heads-up with a small lead.

During one of the first hands of the duel between Reixach and Thorel, both got their chips in preflop with ace-queen and Thorel hit running hearts for a flush. Despite the large lead thereafter, a tense and fierce fight of more than an hour unfolded in which Thorel eventually emerged victoriously to win his third ever title on the live poker circuit. Reixach may have walked away as the runner-up but claimed more money thanks to the Mystery Bounty format.

Sergi Reixach Eliminated in 2nd Place (€76,260 in Cash + €177,500 in Mystery Bounties)

Jean-Noel Thorel raised it up from the button and Sergi Reixach defended the big blind to see a flop of {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}. Reixach opted to check and Thorel then splashed in a bet worth 480,000. The shove by Reixach for around 1.2 million followed and Thorel called without asking for an exact count.

Sergi Reixach: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Jean-Noel Thorel: {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}

The two live cards and flush draw of the Spaniard missed on the {a-Hearts} turn, as did on the {2-Hearts} river, to crown Thorel as the champion. Reixach earned a cash prize of €76,260 and €177,500 in Mystery Bounties along the way.

For Thorel, it was the third ever victory on the live poker circuit and it came with a cash prize of €107,290 and €77,500 in Mystery Bounties.

Mix Up Causes Confusion, Thorel Leaves Reixach Short

Nível 24 : 50,000/100,000, 100,000 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

Jean-Noel Thorel raised to 275,000 from the button and Sergi Reixach defended.

They both checked through the {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} to the {6-Hearts} on the turn. Reixach check-raised the 100,000 bet of Thorel to 600,000 and was called.

The {q-Hearts} completed the board and Thorel bet 600,000 out of turn. The floor was called and Reixach had the option. Reixach seemed uncomfortable with the situation and felt bad. He bet 600,000 for Thorel to make the call. Reixach and the floor explained to Thorel that he had the option still but Thorel insisted on calling.

Reixach showed the {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for the straight but then Thorel flipped over the {k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for the nut flush.

Reixach put his hands in his hair: "Oh no, you're supposed to raise..."

The floor explained to Thorel that he was supposed to raise when he was last to act and had the nuts as per the rules. Thorel nodded and the floor was ready to give him a penalty but Reixach objected and said he'd wouldn't play like that. In the end, no penalty was given as everyone agreed things had become confusing and they continued play.

Belarmino De Souza Eliminated in 3rd Place (€49,930)

Nível 23 : 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Belarmino De Souza
Belarmino De Souza

Sergi Reixach jammed his superior stack into the table short stack Belarmino De Souza, who more than happily called and had the best of it preflop.

Belarmino De Souza: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Sergi Reixach: {5-Spades}{4-Spades}

It was a potential shift in momentum with De Souza on the verge of doubling for nearly one million. However, Reixach picked up a flush draw on the {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop which he then instantly completed on the {j-Spades} turn. That made the {4-Hearts} river a formality and it was time to draw for the golden envelope once more.

Even De Souza was there and filmed with his smart phone. Two €10,000 bounties and the elusive €100,000 top prize were still up for grabs. Reixach peeled slowly and then celebrated vividly when he indeed nailed the €100,000 Mystery Bounty.

Moments later, De Souza headed to the payout desk to collect his cash prize of €49,930.

Imad Derwiche Eliminated in 4th Place (€38,420 in Cash + €100,000 Mystery Bounty)

Imad Derwiche moved all-in from under the gun with the far shortest stack and Sergi Reixach went all-in over the top in the cutoff. Belarmino De Souza went into the tank in the small blind and reluctantly folded while he was enduring some chatter by Derwiche.

Once it was on Jean-Noel Thorel in the big blind, the Frenchman called and the following three-way all-in unfolded.

Imad Derwiche: {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Jean-Noel Thorel: {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}
Sergi Reixach: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

"That's good for me," Derwiche said with a big smile. However, his two live cards found no help on the {4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{q-Spades} board and the Frenchman had to settle for a cash prize of €38,420 and previously earned Mystery Bounty of €100,000.

His bounty prize was a team work between Thorel and Reixach with the latter suggesting the golden hand in the previous draw qualified Thorel to pick the envelope. It was then Reixach who opened it as they sweated a €15,000 prize to be chopped between them.

Jean-Noel Thorel made it 125,000 to go from under the gun and Imad Derwiche went into the tank with a short stack. He used three time banks, mentioned "I am tired guys" and then folded. Sergi Reixach called on the button, Belarmino De Souza did so in the small blind.

Steve O'Dwyer had 175,000 behind in the big blind and inquired if a shove by him would re-open the action, which was not the case as he needed at least 190,000 for a full raise. O'Dwyer then flat-called and jammed the {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} flop for the last 50,000, earning three calls.

They checked through the {a-Spades} turn and {j-Clubs} river as O'Dwyer tabled the {j-Spades}{4-Spades}. De Souza had {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}, Reixach exposed the {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Thorel had the best of it with {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. As the Frenchman drew the envelope for the Mystery Bounty, he grabbed the €50,000 prize and earned applause from the remaining opponents and other players in the room.

As for O'Dwyer, his run ended in 5th place for a cash prize of €30,430.

The very next all-in showdown once more featured Sergi Reixach, who continued his rampage on the table with a massive lead over the other contenders. This time, he was up against Sam Greenwood and the following cards were revealed.

Sam Greenwood: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Sergi Reixach: {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}

Nothing changed on the {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop and the {6-Spades} turn but the dreadful ace appeared on the {a-Spades} river. Greenwood's sixth place came with a cash prize of €23,800 and he had previously collected a €50,000 Mystery Bounty.

"I am feeling good about this one, I will win it," Sergi Reixach said with a smirk on the face as he had just pushed into the initial raise of Rodrigo Selouan and was called by the Brazilian.

Rodrigo Selouan: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Sergi Reixach: {q-Spades}{j-Spades}

Both players paired up on the {k-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop with Selouan retaining his lead. Nothing changed on the {5-Diamonds} turn but the {9-Spades} river improved Reixach to a straight. Selouan's run ended in 7th place for a cash prize of €18,720 while Reixach collected his second bounty in a row, which was worth €25,000.

After returning from the break, Rodrigo Selouan raised to 100,000 on the button and Sergi Reixach pushed all-in out of the small blind to win the pot.

In the next hand, Reixach opened to 100,000 on the button and Lukasz Szymon Grossmann three-bet jammed for 520,000 in the big blind. Reixach mulled it over for a short while and called within the allocated 30 second shot clock.

Lukasz Szymon Grossmann: {a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Sergi Reixach: {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}

The Spaniard was caught on a move for the Mystery Bounty once again but this time got there on the {9-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} board. He won the next hand and then redeemed his bounty. Imad Derwiche walked by and waved his hand already, predicting it to be a €10,000 bounty only.

Reixach peeled slowly and indeed redeemed the €10,000 value bounty, while Grossmann was waiting to collect his cash prize of €14,630.

Timothy Adams Eliminated in 9th Place (€11,120)

Timothy Adams

Timothy Adams raised to 80,000 from under the gun, keeping 15,000 behind. The action folded to Imad Derwiche on the button who three-bet jammed for 335,000. Rodrigo Selouan considered it for a bit on the button but folded. Sergi Reixach called from the big blind with the biggest stack at the table. Adams put his last few chips in too for the call.

"Can we reveal the cards later and just run the board to make it for fun?" Adams asked and the cards stayed closed.

The board ran out {5-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{9-Hearts}.

Derwiche revealed the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} for the ace-king kickers with the pair on the board. Reixach showed the {j-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} for the lower jack-kicker before Adams turned over his {10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for the even lower kicker.

Derwiche was delighted to double through Reixach but was even more exited to be allowed to open the mystery bounty envelope. He walked over to the table with a little swagger, picked out an envelope, slowly revealed the paper inside to see he had won one of the two €100,000 mystery bounty prices, and celebrated loudly.

"Timothy! I love you!" he shouted while celebrating.

Adams walked over, hugged him: "I feel like I gave you that €100,000!" while the rest of the tournament room applauded.
