Welcome to the 2019 PokerStars.es EPT Barcelona €5,300 Main Event

Piotr Nurzynski
Piotr Nurzynski

The European Poker Tour returns to Casino Barcelona for the 15th year running and the success story kicked off back in 2004 when Alexander Stevic became the inaugural EPT Main Event champion. Ever since the stop at the Spanish Riviera has cemented the status as the most popular stop of the year and a record field of 1,931 entries emerged in 2018.

Players from 10 different countries lifted the EPT Main Event trophy in Barcelona with Sweden and Germany providing three champions while two players from Poland came out on top twice.

The defending champion of the record-breaking event is Piotr Nurzynski, who took two years off to travel and played a €250 satellite on PokerStars while in South America to win his Main Event package, which he turned into a payday of €1,037,109.

The biggest and busiest stop of the calendar year has already set the bar of expectations very high with record fields in the Campeonato de España de Poker and the €1,100 EPT National, which attracted a field of 4,682 entries and concluded last night with the victory of Markku Koplimaa. All other side events are also up in numbers and that promises big things for the flagship tournament of the festival in the days to come.

Oscar Hilario Quijada
Oscar Hilario Quijada

The first player to bust on Day 1a was Marco Caza, who ran out of chips some eight minutes into play and it happened during a three-way pot that also involved Jovan Jojic and Oscar Hilario Quijada. The details for the hand were provided by floor staff and Jojic, as well as Andres Korn.

In a three-bet pot for 1,100, the flop came {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and the action checked to Jojic, who bet 1,700. Both Quijada and Caza called to see the {a-Hearts} turn, on which Quijada bet 3,500 and was called twice. Quijada then shoved the {5-Diamonds} river and Caza eventually called, Jojic folded.

Quijada turned over {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for the nut flush and Caza hit the rail with {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

Mark Teltscher
Mark Teltscher

The flop showed {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{7-Spades} and Mark Teltscher bet 2,000 from early position. Florian Duta called in the hijack and Jelle Moene on the button raised to 6,300.

"Where are you from?" Teltscher asked and Moene replied "Netherlands." A few seconds passed and Teltscher then reraised to 17,100, which forced an instant fold from Duta. Moene quickly moved all in and Teltscher called after brief consideration.

Mark Teltscher: {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Jelle Moene: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

The {2-Clubs} turn and {3-Clubs} river run out failed to improve Teltscher and the stacks were counted, Moene had more than 38,000 and that covered Teltscher.

"Guess I will try again," he immediately said and may very well re-enter shortly.

Fatehi and Prendiville Among Big Stacks; Re-Entry for Labat

Nível 6 : 200/500, 500 ante
Sean Prendiville
Sean Prendiville

Antoine Labat is on his second bullet for the day as his first attempt ended with pocket aces. According to Orpen Kisacikoglu, he was down to 5,000 and Ali Reza Fatehi called with ten-eight suited to get there.

The action on Labat's former table didn't slow down as Anton Yakuba took a pot off Enrico Coppola when he called a bet of 7,000 on the {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{k-Clubs} river. Coppola was bluffing with {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, and Yakuba won the pot with the {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}. A few minutes later, Coppola vanished.

Labat's new table features €1,100 National runner-up Adam Hendrix, among others, and one table over a new big stack has emerged as Sean Prendiville leads the table line-up while Chris Hunichen is down by a lot of chips.
