16 Players Remain of Penultimate Day of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event

Ole Schemion brings a commanding stack into Day 5
Ole Schemion brings a commanding stack into Day 5

At noon local time, cards will be back in the air for Day 5 of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT €5,300 EPT Main Event. It's taken four days to whittle a field of 777 entries down to its last 16 hopefuls. Each of them is already guaranteed a slice of €31,700 of the €3,768,450 prize pool, but all eyes are locked on that first place prize of €712,000 and coveted EPT title that awaits the winner on Friday, May 4.

No fewer than three former EPT champions are still in the hunt to become a two-time EPT winner: Adrian Mateos, Patrik Antonius and Davidi Kitai. Mateos could even accomplish a rarer feat, as he won this very same event back in 2015. However, the biggest stack going into the penultimate day belongs to Tomas Jozonis. A set-fueled day on Day 4 vaulted Jozonis to the top of the leaderboard, where he sits alone with 4,075,000.

Jozonis is far from winning it outright, as he has to navigate his way through a stacked table containing the likes of Ole Schemion (2,630,000), the aforementioned Antonius (1,505,000) and Mateos (1,495,000), as well as Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari (960,000). Davor Lanini (900,000), Sadri Saleh (610,000) and Dan Abouaf (595,000) are the short stacks at the table.

The improbable run of qualifier Krisztian Gyorgyi is still going on, as the Hungarian sits in 5th place with 1,770,000. Gyorgyi has no previously recorded live cashes and qualified for this event for just €5 on PokerStars. Gyorgyi will take place at the other table and has to deal with the likes of Javier Fernandez (2,120,000), Honglin Jiang (1,890,000), David Peters (1,675,000), Stefan Huber (975,000), Kitai (825,00), Josip Simunic (690,000) and Nicolas Dumont (500,000).

There's a little over 5 minutes remaining in level 22 with blinds of 10,000/20,000 and a big blind ante of 20,000. Levels will be 90 minutes each for the remainder of the tournament and play will continue until 6 players are left, who will then return on Friday, May 4, to play for the title and the first place prize of €712,000.

Don't miss any of the action right here on PokerNews as we get one step closer to crowning the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT Main Event champion!

Dan Abouaf Eliminated in 16th Place (€31,700)

Nível 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Dan Abouaf
Dan Abouaf

Dan Abouaf open-shoved 595,000 from middle position, a shove of nearly 24 big blinds, and Saleh called in the big blind with 590,000 total.

Dan Abouaf: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Sadri Saleh: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

Abouaf went from three to four outs on the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{K-Spades} flop but neither the {A-Clubs} turn nor {2-Diamonds} river was the queen he needed. Abouaf was left with just 5,000, half a small blind, literally a chip and a chair.

The next hand, Abouaf got his final chip in with {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and Andre Akkari isolated with {A-Spades}{10-Hearts} to get it heads-up. The flop was {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Clubs} to pair up Abouaf, but after the {J-Clubs} turn and {10-Spades} river Akkari's best hand preflop was best at showdown.

Abouaf was the first player out on Day 5 and received €31,700.

Andre Akkari Eliminated in 15th Place (€35,500)

Andre Akkari
Andre Akkari

Andre Akkari raised to 55,000 from under the gun, Patrik Antonius three-bet from the cutoff, Akkari four-bet to 455,000, leaving himself with 520,000 behind. Antonius shoved and Akkari called.

Andre Akkari: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Patrik Antonius: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

Like yesterday against Ole Schemion, the Team PokerStars Pro needed to spike another two-outer if he was to survive. It wasn't in the cards this time as the board ran out {5-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{5-Spades}{K-Hearts}{4-Hearts} to send Akkari home.

After finishing 5th at last year's PokerStars Championship Barcelona, Akkari now finished in 15th place and received €35,500.

Davor Lanini
Davor Lanini

Ole Schemion raised to 50,000 from under the gun, Davor Lanini three-bet to 125,000 out of the big blind and Schemion called. The flop came down {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}{J-Spades} and Lanini checked. Schemion bet 130,000 and the Italian called.

On the {4-Spades} turn, Lanini came out leading with a bet of 250,000. Schemion pondered for a short while before shoving and Lanini snap-called it off.

Davor Lanini: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Ole Schemion: {J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Lanini needed one of the two remaining aces to survive but the river was the {9-Clubs} to seal his fate. He made his way to the rail in 14th place to collect €35,500.

Adrian Mateos was all in for 510,000 from the big blind against Schemion on the button.

Adrian Mateos: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Ole Schemion: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}

The 2015 EPT Grand Final Main Event winner saw his bid at a second title come to a halt after the board ran out {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Mateos shook hands with his tablemates and said his goodbyes in 13th place.

Stefan Huber

Stefan Huber shoved under the gun and got it through.

The next hand, action folded to Honglin Jiang in the small blind and he ripped in. Huber immediately called off for about 290,000 but his {j-Diamonds}{10-Spades} trailed {k-Spades}{7-Clubs}. The {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop did nothing but give Jiang the chance to turn Huber dead.

On the contrary, though, Huber grabbed the lead with the {j-Clubs}.

"That's an interesting one," he said with a smile.

The river: {8-Clubs}, completing a straight for Jiang and busting Huber.

Davidi Kitai: {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Javier Fernandez: {K-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

The flop fell {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Fernandez took the lead. The {3-Diamonds} turn and the {9-Clubs} river were both blanks and Kitai was sent to the rail in 11th place.

Over on the outer table Krisztian Gyorgyi had once again shown pocket aces when he three-bet big and Josip Simunic folded to drop below one million in chips.

Then, David Peters raised to 90,000 on the button and Simunic three-bet all in for what appeared to be 900,000 in the small blind. Gyorgyi reshoved all in from the big blind and Peters folded.

Josip Simunic: {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Krisztian Gyorgyi: {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The board came {K-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} and, unlike in other previous big showdowns, Gyorgyi didn't celebrate but exchanged a few words in German with Simunic. The remaining nine players will now combine to one table and tournament staff has announced that they will take the 20-minute break right now before returning to the unofficial final table action.

Gyorgyi Jams Seven Deuce and Shows the Bluff

Krisztian Gyorgyi
Krisztian Gyorgyi

Tomas Jozonis made it 125,000 on the button with the {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades} and Krisztian Gyorgyi in the small blind three-bet to 360,000 with {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}, Jozonis elected to call. Gyorgyi put on his hoodie before the flop fell {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and Gyorgyi continued for 500,000, Jozonis called with the gutshot and nut flush draw.

The {4-Clubs} appeared on the turn and Gyorgyi moved all in for 1.52 million. Jozonis folded and tapped the table, and he was then shown the bluff by the Hungarian.

Gyorgyi high-fived with Ole Schemion and Patrik Antonius, the latter said "this is good for TV." Jozonis was left grinning and Schemion burst out in laughter.

"This is respect, you have to have some balls," Antonius added and Gyorgyi replied "thank you." Antonius continued "this is balls," to which Javier Fernandez said "this is more than balls."

Last but not least, Antonius nailed it with "this is a little bit crazy, too."
