Antonius in Top Five After Day 1a of Main Event

Nível 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius

A long Day 1a wrapped up at 2018 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague with about 170 of 371 entries making it through, and a poker legend is among those at the top of the counts.

Finnish high-stakes veteran Patrik Antonius bagged up 209,600, good for an unofficial top-five stack, at the conclusion of 10 levels of play.

Antonius has made a triumphant return to tournament poker this year with nearly $5 million in cashes after several years of minimal tournament results. The EPT in particular has been good to him as he has two cashes in EPT Main Events already, including a sixth-place finish at EPT Monte Carlo for €139,050.

The chip lead, meanwhile, belongs to John Sarailis. The Greek player held a big lead over the final couple of levels and it only got bigger at the end when he was dealt pocket kings and busted an unfortunate opponent who grinded through the long day only to run his ace-king into the cowboys. That late hand pushed Sarailis to 297,400.

Sarailis had piles late and was dealt kings for even more.

Other notables finished with big stacks included Xixiang Luo (241,900), Niall Farrell (200,300), Parker Talbot (191,900) and Andras Nemeth (159,900).

Nemeth came over midway through the day after busting in second to Matthias Eibinger in the €50,000 Super High Roller. He experienced some huge swings late but finished on a high note when he made a flush with pocket queens in a sizable pot to recoup some losses from when he ran into queens himself with pocket nines.

Players running dry on chips included Niklas Astedt, Jean-Noel Thorel and Charlie Carrel. Provided they've only fired once, they'll still be able to take a crack at this prize pool with Day 1b or Day 2 registration, as the tournament permits two entries total per player.

Day 1b gets rolling at noon local time here at Hilton Prague once again, and a big field is expected after a solid Day 1a turnout. Tune in to PokerNews for all of your live coverage needs.

Branco Picks Off Astedt's Triple Barrel

Nível 8 : 400/800, 800 ante
Niklas Astedt
Niklas Astedt

Carlos Branco bet 5,100 from the small blind on {4-Spades}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts} and Niklas Astedt made it 13,500 in the hijack. Branco called and they took in the {a-Spades} turn. Branco check-called 18,500 this time, and the river was the {j-Diamonds}. Branco checked and Astedt moved in for 31,300.

"This isn't a slowroll," Branco assured after getting the count.

He did call, showing {q-Spades}{10-Spades} when Astedt indicated it was a bluff. The dealer turned over Astedt's {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}.

Thorel Eliminated on Bad Beat

Nível 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Jean-Noel Thorel
Jean-Noel Thorel

According to players at the table, Konstantin Farber opened under the gun, one player called and Jean-Noel Thorel put in a squeeze on the button to 8,000. Farber moved in and Thorel called off for 62,000 or so.

Konstantin Faber: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Jean-Noel Thorel: {a-Spades}{a-Diamonds}

Thorel's bullets had him in good shape for a double, as did the {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} that hit the felt. However, the {q-Spades} river had him tossing his chips into the middle in frustration as he hurried to the door.

Carrel Bluffs Off a Chunk

On a board of {2-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}, Charlie Carrel checked in the small blind and faced a bet of 4,400 into about 11,000. He opted to shove all in for 27,000 effective and his opponent paused a beat then called.

Carrel shook his head and flipped over {10-Hearts}{7-Spades} and was surprised to see {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} based on the pause.

"The sigh-call!" he exclaimed.

The dealer burned and turned a {9-Clubs} and Carrel missed his draw and had to ship a double.

"Well," Max Silver pointed out with a laugh. "He did have all the aces."

Ali Reza Fatehi has been firing away at a table on the stage, amassing a stack of about 60,000 before a recent slide. First, he paid off a river bet by a player who flopped a set and rivered a full house.

Then, Pim Gieles bet 3,000 on a board of {k-Spades}{3-Spades}{a-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} out of the small blind and Fatehi called. On the {3-Hearts} river, Gieles shoved all in for 21,000. Fatehi called fairly quickly but couldn't beat {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}.

Welcome to Day 1a of 2018 EPT Prague €5,300 Main Event

PokerStars EPT
PokerStars EPT

The time has come for the crown jewel of 2018 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague: the €5,300 Main Event. Today marks Day 1a — the first of two starting days — of seven straight days of Main Event action.

The EPT's traditional closeout event in the Czech capital has a long and fruitful history, which ended temporarily last year when PokerStars' live operations were rebranded. Past champions of the event include Roberto Romanello, Martin Finger and 2016 winner Jasper Meijer van Putten. Several prize pools over €5 million have been generated.

In the intervening year, Frenchman Kalidou Sow prevailed over Jason Wheeler after a heated heads-up match, topping a field of 855 to win €675,000.

The day's schedule calls for 10 levels of play, each lasting an hour. Players begin with 30,000 in their stacks playing blinds of 100/100 if they sit during Level 1, progressing to 600/1,200 with a 1,200 big blind ante. A dinner break of 75 minutes will be given after Level 6.

Each player is permitted one reentry, so eliminated players may find themselves back in the event.

Cards are scheduled to fly at noon local time here in Prague, so keep an eye on PokerNews for updates throughout the day.
