PokerStars EPT Prague Sets New Record in Final Go

Nível 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Ronald Morandini
Ronald Morandini

European Poker Tour Prague has been around since way back in Season 4 of the PokerStars EPT, but it's never been quite this big before. With a monster Day 1b turnout of 934 players added to the 244 who fired on Day 1a of the freezeout, the turnout has been pushed to 1,178, besting the 1,107 who played in 2014.

And there's still time for more. The final event in the history of the EPT will keep registration open until Day 2 kicks off Thursday at noon local time.

Day 1b saw another eight levels of play, and this time, little-known American player Ronald Morandini emerged as the chip leader with a late surge that pushing him to 237,400. That's good for the overall lead ahead of Day 1a star Henrik Hecklen. Matas Cimbolas (215,100), Anton Petrov (214,800) and Maxim Lykov (180,400) also finished with heavy bags. A pair of former EPT Prague champs, Ensan Hossein (2015) and Roberto Romanello (2010) also made it through.

Others among the 474 who punched Day 2 tickets were Ari Engel, Patrick Leonard, Mustapha Kanit, Philipp Gruissem, and PokerStars-sponsored players Felipe Ramos, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Luca Pagano, Vanessa Selbst and Gabriel Nassif.

William Kassouf, whom the ESPN TV cameras made a star or a villain at the World Series of Poker, depending on one's point of view, was among the Day 1b runners who weren't so fortunate. Kassouf tried to get his table talk game going but never seemed to be much above the starting stack. Down to just over 10,000 at 250/500/75, Kassouf got it in with {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and found himself staring at an opponent's tens.

"Nine high like a boss," was one of Kassouf's catch phrases on camera, but it did him no good in this instance when he merely paired a nine and busted out against the tens.

Other notable Day 1b eliminations included Oliver Price, Andrey Zaichenko, Antoine Saout, Max Silver, Gaelle Baumann, Sebastian Pauli and Benny Glaser.

When the Day 1a and Day 1b survivors combine at noon, there will be 591 runners remaining plus whatever players elect to enter the tournament at last call. More EPT action is on tap for Thursday, and PokerNews will again be your source for live coverage.

Kassouf Eliminated - Nine High Not Like a Boss

Nível 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
William Kassouf
William Kassouf

William Kassouf jammed for about 11 big blinds from late position and received a call. Kassouf turned over {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} and stated, "Nine high like a boss." His opponent was well ahead after he turned over {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}.

The {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{3-Spades} flop was of very little help to Kassouf other than giving him some backdoor outs. The {9-Clubs} on the turn gave Kassouf a little more hope, however, when the {2-Hearts} completed the board, he hit the rail, picked up his belongings and shared, "Today was not my day."

Last EPT Main Event Sets a New Prague Record

EPT Prague is not only the last EPT in history but also the 10 year anniversary of the event. It is only fitting that history is set. The big board is now showing 861 entrants for Day 1b. Combined with the 246 players from Day 1a, the field size has tied the EPT Prague Main Event record of 1,107 players.

Tournament organizers shared that there are at least a couple of dozen online qualifiers yet to take the seat. So now it isn't just about whether a new EPT Prague Main record will be set, but by how much it will be shattered.

Finger Doubles With Boat

A player in the small blind bet 5,000 into a pot of about 12,000 with {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} on the felt. Martin Finger called in early position, and the small blind put him all in for just under 13,000 on the {q-Clubs} river. The German snap-called with {9-Spades}{8-Spades} for a boat, and his opponent didn't even get a chance to show.

Welcome to Day 1b of the EPT13 Prague Main Event

Prague Old Town Square
Prague Old Town Square

Welcome to Day 1b of the 2016 PokerStars EPT Prague Main Event at the Hilton Hotel Prague. Today represents the final opening day in the 13-year EPT Main Event history with all future PokerStars branded tournaments to fall under the umbrella of the PokerStars Championship and PokerStars Festival.

Yesterday's Day 1a attracted a field of 246 players, just shy of last year's total of 254. Less than half of yesterday's field with 117 players survived to tomorrow's Day 2 to join those making it out of today's final opening day field.

Denmark's Henrik Hecklen ended yesterday on top of the board with 221,800 chips, followed by China's Gang Wang (second - 152,800), Austria's Thomas Muehloecker (third - 151,500), Latvia's Eduards Kudrjavcevs (fourth - 146,100) and Spain's Pedro Lamarca (140,100).

Other notable players to bag chips at the end of yesterday included Tony Dunst (129,500) and Pascal Lefrancois (114,900). Anthony Zinno (64,300), Dario Sammartino (61,000), Daniel Dvoress (58,700), Sergio Aido (55,500), Juha Helppi (48,900) and €50,000 EPT 13 Prague Super High Roller runner-up Charlie Carrel (37,800).

As is usually the case in EPT Main Events, the field size on the final starting flight is expected to be much larger compared to yesterday's first opening flight. The record attendance for an EPT Prague Main Event took place two years ago in season 11 when Stephen Graner finished on top of a field of 1,107 players to win €969,000. Last year in Prague, Hossein Ensan navigated through a slightly smaller field of 1,044 entrants to capture the tournament's top prize of €754,510.

Our coverage begins at noon CET and continues until the players bag up their chips at around midnight after the completion of eight levels of 75-minutes each. A 20-minute break is scheduled after every second level, with a 75-minute dinner break at the end of the sixth level. After today is in the books, Days 2 to 6 take place from Dec. 13 to 19 until the last EPT Main Event winner in history is crowned.

Also taking place today is the final table of the €2,200 Eureka High Roller as well as the €25,500 Single-Day High Roller, the latter of which PokerNews will be on hand today for live coverage in the addition to the EPT Prague Main Event.

With the final EPT Main Event winner to claim the champion's trophy in less than a week, PokerNews recapped the 13-year history of the tour. Part One of the retrospective focused on the early years in Seasons 1 through 5, Part Two focused on the Berlin robbery, the effects of Black Friday and the "mega-schedule" and Part Three will focus on the later years in Seasons 9 through 13 when the number of venues was reduced with each offering more events, along with some general stats about the venues and EPT winners.
