France Dominates EPT Grand Final as Adrien Allain Leads the Final Six

Adrien Allain
Adrien Allain

The 2016 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €5,300 Main Event got down to its final six players on Thursday, and Adrien Allain led the way with 11.815 million in chips, He was closely followed by his fellow countryman Jimmy Guerrero with 11.48 million in chips.

The story of the day was that of Kazakhstani Asan Umarov, who qualified on PokerStars in a €10 Spin & Go, but he'll be facing an uphill battle coming into the final six as the short stack.

With a massive gap between second and third place, it looks to be a tough battle to reach the podium, as the bottom four stacks combined have less than 10 million chips. Allain and Guerrero were dominating at the final table leading up to the final six, and the other four will need a lot of help to get back into it.

All remaining players are guaranteed to take home at least €170,950, and Friday's final table looks as follows:

SeatNameCountryChip CountBig Blinds
1Jimmy GuerreroFrance11,480,000115
2Pierre CalamusaFrance2,235,00022
3Adrien AllainFrance11,815,000118
4Oren RosenIsrael2,315,00023
5Jan BendikSlovakia2,625,00026
6Asan UmarovKazakhstan2,235,00022

The penultimate day started with 28 players, including PokerStars team pro Vanessa Selbst, but she got knocked out in 26th place for €26,850 after coming into the day as one the short stacks. French pros Paul Tedeschi and Benjamin Pollak were next to go in 25th and 24th, respectively, while Joao Vieira grabbed the chip lead.

Notables Erwann Pecheux (18th - €37,330) and Ariel Celestino (16th - €42,650) were knocked out short of the final table, but in a twist of events the tournament also lost Vieira shortly afterwards. Vieira ran ace-king into the aces of Jan Bendik before busting, and the final blow was delivered when his kings got cracked by Guerrero's ace-king. Vieira exited in 13th place for €53,310, and a little while later it was Guerrero who took a commanding lead after doubling through Bendik with a flush versus a straight.

Coming into the final table, Guerrero led with close to 9 million and was followed by Allain with 5.6 million.

On the ninth hand of nine-handed play it was Ben Philipps who busted out when his king-jack couldn't beat Calamusa's pocket sixes, and he took home €71,620.

Last year Dario Sammartino finished 17th in this event, and in 2013 he recorded a 19th-place finish, showing that this is truly a tournament he shines in. Sammartino did well to surpass those finishes by reaching the final table, but on the 36th hand of it the top Italian pro busted in eighth place, collecting €91,860.

One of France's more recognizable poker players, and the first-ever Frenchman to make the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, Antoine Saout, ultimately busted in seventh place to end the day's play. Saout ran fives into the jacks of Allain, and he collected €128,340 for his deep run.

The action will resume on Friday at 2 p.m. local time with a live stream with hole cards up, and hand-for-hand coverage on PokerNews.com that follows along with the stream.

While you wait for the final six to resume action on Friday, check out this Day 5 interview with the chip leader Allain:

Hand #60: Action folded around to Adrien Allain on the button and he made it 250,000 holding {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}.

Antoine Saout found {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and shoved in his 1,525,000 stack. Big blind Oren Rosen folded instantly, Allain called just as quick.

The flop came {Q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs}, not connecting Saout in any way. The {A-Clubs} on the turn however gave him some outs for a split pot, but the {9-Diamonds} on the river didn't do it for him.

Saout finished in 7th place for €128,340. The remaining 6 players started bagging and tagging, all guaranteed €170,950.

Hand #48: Jimmy Guerrero raised under the gun to 235,000 with {8-Spades}{7-Spades} and Asan Umarov looked at {A-Clubs}{10-Spades} in the big blind. Umarov called and the flop brought out {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{10-Hearts}, on which Guerrero bet 275,000 after Umarov checked. Umarov called and on the turn the {6-Diamonds} hit.

Umarov checked again, and Guerrero bet 675,000 on the turn. Umarov tanked for a bit before calling, and the river was the {6-Spades}.

Umarov checked again, and now Guerrero checked behind with his made flush against the two pair of his opponent.

Hand #49: Adrien Allain raised under the gun plus one with {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} to 225,000 and Oren Rosen looked at {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} in the cutoff. Rosen went into the tank for quite some time before folding his hand.

Jan Bendik called with {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} on the button and two players saw a flop of {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades}. After unknown action the turn brought out {9-Clubs} and both players checked.

The river was the {7-Hearts} and again the action was checked. Bendik showed his pocket pair and he won the pot.

Hand #50: Pierre Calamusa received a walk.

Hand #51: Pierre Calamusa limped with {A-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Adrien Allain checked with {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. The flop brought out {5-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and and Calamusa bet 125,000 and Allain called.

The turn brought out the {A-Diamonds} and Calamusa bet 300,000 into Allain's turned straight. Allain raised it up to 800,000 and Calamusa called rather quickly.

On the river the {K-Diamonds} hit and Calamusa checked to Allain who looked down at his cards before betting 1.5 million and Calamusa snap-called.

Ben Philipps on the button shoved all in for 1,070,000 with {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}. Calamusa asked how much it was, and called after thinking about it for a bit.

The {4-Clubs} fell on the river and Philipps bubbled the final table, going out in 9th for €71,620. The remaining 8 finalists are guaranteed €91,860 from here on out.

Asan Umarov: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, doing nothing for Abduraimov. The {6-Hearts} on the turn even made things worse as he lost some of his outs. The {8-Hearts} on the river made Umarov a flush and Abduraimov made his exit in 10th place.

Adrien Allain in the hijack made it 135,000 and his neighbor Enver Abduraimov in the cutoff three-bet to 300,000. Action folded back to Allain and the Frenchman made it 775,000. Abduraimov just about instantly called upon learning how much it was.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and Allain continued for 500,000. Abduraimov didn't waste any time raising to 1.2 million and Allain answered with an all in for 2,065,000. Abduraimov asked for an exact count, and called.

Adrien Allain: {A-Hearts}{A-Spades}
Enver Abduraimov: {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

The {4-Clubs} on the turn gave Abduraimov some new outs, but the {A-Diamonds} on the river wasn't one of them. Double up for Allain.

Bendik Loses Huge Pot, Doubles Right After

Nível 27 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Jan Bendik
Jan Bendik

We caught the tail end of a very big pot between Jimmy Guerrero and Jan Bendik. On a board of {6-Spades}{10-Spades}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs} we saw small blind Oren Rosen bet out 180,000. Big blind Jan Bendik made the call before Jimmy Guerrero squeezed to 750,000. Rosen folded, Bendik made the call.

The river came the {Q-Spades} and Bendik checked. Guerrero carefully cut out 1.5 million and slid them forward. Bendik instantly called, but angrily mucked his {7-Spades}{3-Spades} upon being shown Guerrero's {K-Spades}{5-Spades}.

Bendik was a bit on tilt after that, motioning the camera's to go away. The next hand though, the sky would clear up for him again.

Mohamed Aissani made it 110,000 to go from first position and his neighbor Jimmy Guerrero made the call. Small blind Jan Bendik still seemed agitated and shoved all in for 1,845,000. Aissani moved in over the top and Guerrero folded.

Mohamed Aissani: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Jan Bendik: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The board ran out {A-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Bendik doubled up.

Loc Tu

From the cutoff, Oren Rosen raised to 120,000. His neighbor on the button Jan Bendik folded but small blind Loc Tu three-bet to 290,000. Antoine Saout folded his big blind and Rosen made the call.

The flop came {A-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Rosen made a bet of 360,000, leaving himself exactly 500,000 behind. Rosen didn't waste much time shoving all in and Tu went into the tank.

"Will you show if I fold?" asked Tu.

When Rosen didn't respond, Tu eventually slid forward his single tower of chips.

Oren Rosen: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Loc Tu: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

Tu was in trouble and needed help fast. The {7-Spades} on the turn and {8-Diamonds} on the river weren't the cards he was looking for though, and he made his exit in 12th place.

The €10 Spin & Go qualifier took home €53,310 for his performance, guaranteeing the remaining 11 players €59,500.
