Sam Greenwood Leads EPT Malta High Roller Final Table

Nível 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante

Day 2 of the €25,000 High Roller of the PokerStars EPT12 Malta started out with some new players jumping into action. A couple of qualifiers and late registrants bumped the total amount of entries to 74 — down a bit from EPT11's 88 entrants — making for a total prize pool of €1,813,000.

World Series of Poker 2014 November Niner Jorryt van Hoof was the first to go, but it wouldn't take long before he got some company on the rail. Philip Sternheimer, Jean-Noel Thorel, Ivan Luca and many more all made their exit before the first level was done.

Many former EPT champions fell before the tournament was even close to the money. Steve O'Dwyer couldn't win the flip with tens to Juha Helppi's king-jack, and both Antonio Buonanno and Jason Mercier lost their stacks as well.

Last season's winner, Dzmitry Urbanovich, lasted a bit longer but wouldn't go back to back. He first lost a big hand to Dan Smith when the latter hit two pair while the Polish prodigy had flopped the nut flush draw. When Urbanovich failed to improve, he was left a bit short and busted not much later to Dietrich Fast with king-jack all in preflop against kings.

With Urbanovich's exit the tournament was down to 23 players, which is when EPT11 Grand Final champ Adrian Mateos busted. As the tournament halted for a redraw, just Brian Robert's table was still in action. Roberts played a remarkable hand where he three-bet preflop and bet flop, turn, and river. After his river bet he had just a single big blind behind, but he folded to Helppi's push nonetheless. Roberts did make the redraw, but he exited soon after to Jason Wheeler, who qualified for the tournament the night before in a satellite.

While Roberts didn't make a comeback from his single big blind, Wheeler had been in a similar position and made it work. At one point Wheeler was left with four big blinds instead of just one, and his comeback proved impressive. He stayed focused, didn't rush, and a couple of double ups later was right back in it.

Meanwhile, players fell left and right, but not many of them in such spectacular fashion as Charlie Carrel. Last season's Grand Final €25,000 High Roller champion four-bet preflop, and bet small on the turn to eventually ship it all in on the turn. Byron Kaverman just called him down with aces and Carrel couldn't show more than a turned gutshot with jack-nine. He didn't hit and Carrel's punishment for the failed bluff was a place on the rail.

After Chris Hunichen four-bet shoved ace-seven into Mike "Timex" McDonald's jacks, the tournament was getting closer to the money. Start-of-day chip leader Quan Zhou didn't have the best day and soft bubbled. The unfortunate bubble boy was Mikita Badziakouski, who couldn't beat out Christopher Frank's ace-king with his queens. Frank rivered a wheel and the high roller from Belarus was the last player to leave empty handed.

Andrew Chen was the first to go to the payout desk, receiving €45,325 for his 11th-place finish after his ace-queen failed to improve against Sam Greenwood's nines.

Fast, who started out the day second in chips, received the same amount for his 10th-place finish. Just before the bubble he had turned second pair into a bluff in a big pot, but his opponent had the seconds nuts and wasn't folding. Fast was short after the bubble and gifted his last chips to Greenwood with king-ten against pocket deuces.

Before the tournament could be paused for the final redraw, another player busted on the other table. Wheeler knocked out the very short Frank, and just like that the tournament was down to eight players. Interestingly, three of the remaining eight players didn't play on Day 1 as Wheeler qualified via the aforementioned satellite and both Benjamin Pollak and Sylvain Loosli just bought in on Day 2.

The eight finalists return tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. local time for the final. All eight of them are guaranteed €67,990 at this point, but they're gunning for that first place prize of €498,575. Here's how things stack up:

Christopher Frank Eliminated in 9th Place (€51,670)

Nível 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Christopher Frank

As Dietrich Fast was eliminated over on the other table, the dealer was gathering the antes over on table 1. "Do we redraw now?" Christopher Frank asked the floor. "Did you start the riffle?" the floor asked the dealer who confirmed. "Than you play one more hand" the floor answered Frank.

"Is it the same hand? Do I get the same money if I bust now?" Frank inquired. The floor told him that would not be the case as he would bust later than his buddy Fast.

The next hand was dealt and Jason Wheeler moved all in under the gun. Action folded around to Frank in the big blind. He had just 170,000 left at this point and snap called.

Christopher Frank: {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}
Jason Wheeler: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}

While Frank got up from the table to tell his friends on the rail what the showdown was, the dealer didn't make a big show out of it and just put the board out there: {K-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{3-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}. Frank was eliminated in 9th place for €51.670, and just like that the day was done.

With still 51 minutes and 58 seconds left on the clock, the redraw was done and the players started the bagging and tagging proces. Final table draw and exact chip counts to follow.

Dietrich Fast Eliminated in 10th Place (€45,325)

Nível 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Dietrich Fast - 10th Place
Dietrich Fast - 10th Place

Sam Greenwood opened for 125,000 from the cutoff only to have Dietrich Fast, who won a World Series of Poker Europe bracelet a couple weeks back, three-bet all in for roughly 750,000 from the small blind. Nearly 90 second ticked off the clock before Greenwood suddenly grabbed a stack of chips and put them in the middle.

Fast: {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Greenwood: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}

It was a flip, but not after the flop came down {2-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} to give Greenwood a set. Fast began to stand up, but paused when the {A-Spades} turn delivered him some hope to a gutshot Broadway draw. Unfortunately for him, the {5-Clubs} river was not what he needed and he took his leave from the tournament in 10th place.

Andrew Chen Eliminated in 11th Place (€45,325)

Nível 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Andrew Chen
Andrew Chen

Andrew Chen had a big hand on the bubble where he check folded the river to Byron Kaverman. He found a way to sneak into the money, but didn't last long after it burst.

Chen got his chips in before the flop with {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and found a challenger in his neighbor Sam Greenwood who had {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}.

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades} and Chen hit the rail in 11th place, netting him €45,325. That same amount will be taken home by the next player to go, the first money bubble is with 9 players (€51,670).

"I can't, sorry man!" Byron Kaverman said as Chen wanted to know what he had in the hand on the bubble. "That situation will never come up again" Chen added but Kaverman didn't budge.

Mikita Badziakouski Bubbles EPT12 Malta €25K High Roller

Mikita Badziakouski bubbles the €25,000 EPT Malta High Roller 2015
Mikita Badziakouski bubbles the €25,000 EPT Malta High Roller 2015

Mikita Badziakouski has been clinging to a short stack, and after Nick Petrangelo's double, the pressure was on the Belarusian.

After Mike McDonald, who has been very active on the bubble, opened for 90,000 from the cutoff, Badziakouski moved all in for 320,000 from the button. Sylvain Loosli folded from the small blind, and then Christopher Frank four-bet all in over the top for 1.1 million. McDonald folded and it was off to the race.

Badziakouski: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Frank: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

Badziakouski was looking to hold, which he did on the {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop. The {3-Diamonds} turn gave Frank a wheel draw to go with his overs, and much to the dismay of Badziakouski, it came in when the {5-Diamonds} spiked on the river.

With that, Badziakouski left empty handed and guaranteed the remaining 11 players — three of which didn't even play on Day 1 as they late registered before the start of play today — a minimum €45,325 payday.

Rossiter Bad Beated Out of the Tournament

Nível 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Jeff Rossiter
Jeff Rossiter

On a flop of {3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} we witnessed Sam Greenwood in the big blind check call a bet of 85,000 from his opponent Jeff Rossiter who was seated on the button.

The {4-Clubs} fell on the turn and Greenwood checked again. Rossiter moved all in and Greenwood instantly called by tossing in a single 5,000-chip.

Jeff Rossiter: {K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Sam Greenwood: {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

Things were looking good for Rossiter as he just needed to fade an eight on the river to double up. We didn't have time to check for how much Rossiter was all in as the dealer quickly burned and placed the {8-Spades} on the river.

You could feel people shivering and Pollak even let out a small sigh. Rossiter stayed calm though, and wished Greenwood good luck. 13 players left, two from the money.

Frederik Jensen Eliminated

Nível 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Frederik Jensen
Frederik Jensen

Action folded to Frederik Jensen and the EPT champion moved in for 322,000 from the button. Jason Wheeler in the small blind peeked at his cards and announced all in as well. Juha Helppi folded his big blind.

Frederik Jensen: {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs}
Jason Wheeler: {A-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

Wheeler's position was great and it only got better on the flop: {A-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. Jensen already got up from the table, and despite getting a glimmer of hope on the {K-Spades} turn, the {10-Hearts} on the river blanked and the Dane made his exit.

Wheeler still below average, but with 920,000 (31 big blinds) he has a very much workable stack.

Carrel Bluffs It All Off with Jack-Nine

Nível 14 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

Charlie Carrel made it 50,000 from the cutoff and Byron kaverman on the button three bet to 125,000. Both blinds quickly released and action was back on Carrel. The Brit four bet to 325,000 with around 475,000 behind. Kaverman thought about it for just a bit before making the call.

The flop came {K-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Carrel bet a modest 175,000. Kaverman called. The {Q-Hearts} fell on the turn and Carrel tanked for just a bit before moving all in. Kaverman snap called. Carrel let out a big sigh of disappointment and slammed his {J-Spades}{9-Diamonds} on the table. Kaverman gave him the bad news by showing {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}.

Carrel needed a ten but didn't get it: {Q-Diamonds} on the river. "Nice hand" Carrel said before making his way to the exit.

Defending Champ Dzmitry Urbanovich Eliminated

Nível 13 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Dzmitry Urbanovich
Dzmitry Urbanovich

While Adrian Mateos was busting at one table, the defending champ, Dzmitry Urbanovich, fell at another.

It happened when Urbanovich, who had been nursing a short stack, moved all in for his last 151,000 from early position and recent WSOPE bracelet winner Dietrich Fast called from the small blind.

Urbanovich: {k-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Fast: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Urbanovich was in big trouble, and while he received a little help on the {j-Hearts}{a-Spades}{4-Spades} flop, he needed more to stay alive. The {8-Clubs} turn wasn't it, and neither was the {Q-Spades} river. Urbanovich missed and saw his title defense come to an end in 24th place.

Chen Dispatches Smain and Mercier in Back-to-Back Hands

Nível 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Jason Mercier

Mamouni Smain, who qualified for this event via a €3,000 satellite, got his chips all in preflop holding {a-}{q-} and was up against the {6-}{6-} of Andrew Chen. A six on the flop all but sealed the deal for Chen, and Smain hit the rail.

In the very next hand, Brian Roberts raised to 30,000 and Chen called from the cutoff. Frederik Jensen called from the small blind, and Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier three-bet all in for roughly 280,000 from the big. Roberts folded, Chan called, and Jensen got out of the way.

Chen: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Mercier: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Roberts informed Mercier that he had folded the same hand, which obviously was not what Mercier wanted to hear. The board ran out {7-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and that was all she wrote for Mercier.

"Ok, good luck," he offered before collecting his things and exiting the tournament floor.
