After a successful stop in Season 11, the European Poker Tour was back at the Mediterranean island of Malta for a 76-event series hosted in conjunction with the Italian Poker Tour.

"We’re thrilled to be heading back to Malta for the second time this year," said Edgar Stuchly, PokerStars Director of Live Events. "The debut EPT here in March was a big success and our players relished the opportunity to experience high quality poker in a great tourist location. We have a great tournament schedule planned, as well as a fantastic cash game offering, so it’s truly appealing for every kind of player."

On Friday, Day 1 of the €25,000 High Roller kicked off inside Portomaso Casino. The tournament saw 57 unique players take to the felt and account for 10 reentires, which brought the total field to 67. That's down a bit from last season's field of 88 entrants (Dzmitry Urbanovich won that event for €572,300), but registration is open until the start of Day 2, meaning there's a strong chance it'll go up.

After eight one-hours levels, 49 players bagged and tagged with China's Quan Zhou and his stack of 952,000 leading the way.

In Level 7 (2,000/4,000/500), in a blind-versus-blind hand, Mike "Timex" McDonald and Zhou each invested 26,000 from the small and big blind respectively. The {3-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop saw McDonald check-call a bet of 32,000, and then he check-called one of 46,000 on the {6-Diamonds} turn.

When the {Q-Spades} completed the board on the river, both players checked and McDonald tabled the {k-Spades}{9-Spades}. It was no good though as Zhou had him out kicked with the {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

"River nine," Zhou joked.

"You probably win all my chips," McDonald said with a laugh.

Of course not everyone was as fortunate as Zhou. Martin Finger, who won the EPT12 Barcelona High Roller a few months back, was the first to go, which happened after Anton Astapau opened for 2,400 from the hijack and four players called to see a flop of {j-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Action checked to Astapau, who bet 5,600, and Smain Mamouni called before Brian Roberts squeezed from the button for 28,000.

Finger cold-called from the small blind, and all other players folded to make it heads-up action to the {5-Clubs} turn. Finger checked, Roberts bet 55,000, and Finger shoved. Roberts called and Finger discovered the bad news.

Finger: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}
Roberts: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

It was a brutal set over set, and Finger was drawing to one out. The {2-Clubs} river wasn't it, and Finger hit the rail. He soon exercised his single reentry option, but it did him little good as he was eliminated for a second time in Level 6.

Others who fell on Day 1 were Rasmus Vogt, Berthold Winz, Yingui Li, Mohsin Charania, Justin Liberto, and Patrik Antonius. All of those players will have the opportunity to reenter on Day 2 if they choose, but one man who will not is Scott Seiver, who exhausted his single reentry.

Among those who will be back are recent World Series of Poker Europe bracelet winner Dietrich Fast (931,000); Germans Christopher Frank (704,000) and Marvin Rettenmaier (670,000); last year's runner-up Connor Drinan (510,000); EPT11 Grand Final High Roller victor Charlie Carrel (453,500); EPT11 Grand Final champ Adrian Mateos (352,000); and reigning World Poker Tour Player of the Year Anthony Zinno (305,000).

Day 2 will kick off at 12:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. As always, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action, which you can read about in our live blog. Until then, check out PokerStars' premiere of live Spin & Go's at the EPT12 Malta:

"Nitty Newey Never Would Have Played That"

Nível 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Brian Roberts - Justin Bonomo - Paul Newey
Brian Roberts - Justin Bonomo - Paul Newey

In the last hand of the night, Brian Roberts opened for 12,500 and Justin Bonomo called from the hijack. A short-stacked Paul Newey then moved all in blind from the cutoff for 82,500. The button and blinds all folded, and then both Roberts and Bonomo called.

The {9-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop saw Roberts bet 40,000, Bonomo called, and then both players checked the {Q-Spades} turn as well as the {6-Clubs} river. Bonomo showed the {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}, which was behind the {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} of Roberts. Newey then revealed the {k-Spades}{9-Spades} for two pair.

"Saved myself €25,000," a joyful Newey said after discovering he tripled up.

"Best poker I've ever seen you play," Senh Ung, one of Newey's best friends, said from the rail.

"Nitty Newey never would have played that," Rob Schiffbauer added.

Carrel, De Meulder & Chattha Among Early EPT12 Malta Side Event Winners

Nível 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

The European Poker Tour Malta is comprised of 76 events, and already some notables have been winning "Spadies."

For instance, the first event, a €5,000 Win the Button tournament, attracted just five players, though all of them — Ben Heath, Martin Finger, Patrick Leonard, Charlie Carrel and IPT7 Malta champion Georgios Zisimopoulos – were accomplished.

In the end, the 22-year-old Carrel defeated his best friend, Ben Heath, in heads-up play to walk away with the €15,760 top prize and the first trophy of the festival. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Heath earned €8,490 for his efforts.

According to PokerStars, Carrel, known as "Epiphany77" online, started his poker career online with a deposit of just $15 and now has online earnings of nearly $900k including chopping the Sunday Million last year.

His first big score on the EPT came here in Malta in March when he made the final of the €10k High Roller, finishing fifth for €183,800; and then just two months later he won the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo Casino EPT Grand Final Grand Final High Roller for €1,114,000.

In other news, Team PokerStars Pro Matthias De Meulder took down the €500 NL Deepstack Turbo event on Thursday night for €9,842., which came after cutting a three-way deal with runner-up Georgios Zisimopoulos, the reigning IPT Malta champ, and British player Patrick Leonard. There were 82 entries in total, creating a €39,770 prize pool with 11 players making the money.

Meanwhile, Eric Lescot took down the €500 PLO Turbo – a tournament that attracted 56 entries and created a prize pool of €27,160 — for €7,315 after cutting a heads-up deal with Finland’s Olli Kokko.

Finally, Britain’s Chaz Chattha won the €200 NL Hyper Turbo – a tournament that attracted 108 players with 15 being paid — for €4,540 after a three-way deal that saw runner-up Istvan Magyar and third-place finisher Giorgio Bellanca both take home €3,500 each.

Vogt & Winz Eliminated

Rasmus Vogt
Rasmus Vogt

With approximately 30,000 in the pot and a flop of {k-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, two checks saw Huidong Gu bet 21,000. Jean-Noel Thorel called, and then Rasmus Vogt check-raised all in for roughly 50,000. Gu proceeded to move all in over the top, and Thorel folded {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} face up.

Gu: {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Vogt: {2-Clubs}{2-Spades}

Vogt, who qualified for the event in a Thursday night €3,000 satellite, got it in good, but he fell behind when the {9-Diamonds} spiked on the turn. The {6-Clubs} river failed to pair the board, and Vogt took his leave from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Berthold Winz was also eliminated from the tournament.

Mateos With the Six-Bet Bluff

Nível 5 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Action folded around to Adrian Mateos and he made it 6,000 from the button. The small blind folded but Quan Zhou in the big blind three-bet to 16,400. Mateos four-bet to 44,000 and Zhou five-bet to 85,000. Mateos shoved for 244,300 and Zhou folded after some tanking.

Mateos peeked at his cards one more time, and revealed the {6-Spades} while gathering the chips in the pot.

"Adrian you beast!" table mate Charlie Carrel commented with a big smile. "On the second bullet as well" continued Carrel who himself is also on his second bullet.

Carrel Second to Fall

Nível 3 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Charlie Carrel

Action folded to Nick Petrangelo in the cutoff and he opened for 4,000. EPT11 Grand Final €25,000 High Roller champ Charlie Carrel then three-bet to 10,000 from the button, which inspired both blinds to fold.

With action back on Petrangelo, he four-bet to 27,000 and wasted little time in calling when Carrel shipped for approximately 95,000. Carrel tabled {a-}{9-} offsuit, but it was no good as Petrangelo held the {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. The board ran out clean, and Carrel quickly collected his things before making a beeline for the exit.

Finger First to Bust

Nível 2 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Martin Finger
Martin Finger

As we arrived we saw Finger and Roberts committing their stacks. We asked Finger after he busted what had happened, and he filled us in on the details.

Anton Astapau opened for 2,400 from the hijack and he received calls from Smain Mamouni (cutoff), Brian Roberts (button), Martin Finger (small blind) and Berthold Winz (big blind).

The flop came {J-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and action checked to the initial raiser. Astapau made a continuation bet of 5,600 and Mamouni called. Roberts squeezed from the button to 28,000 and Finger cold called from the small blind. All other players folded and it was heads up to the turn.

The {5-Clubs} made Finger check and Roberts bet 55,000. Finger pushed all in and was called by Roberts.

Martin Finger: {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}
Brian Roberts: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Finger had just one out left and didn't hit it with the {2-Clubs} on the river. The dealer started counting the stacks and Roberts turned out to have 215,700. Finger had 1,800 more and would commit those the next hand with {A-Clubs}{2-Spades}, but was busted by his neighbor Winz who had {A-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and hit his six.

Welcome to Day 1 of the EPT12 €25,000 High Roller!

Portomaso Casino EPT Malta
Portomaso Casino EPT Malta

Welcome to the European Poker Tour's second-ever stop in Malta! After a resounding success in Season 11, the EPT returns to the Mediterranean island in conjunction with the Italian Poker Tour, which has been hosting its IPT Malta Main Event – a tournament that attracted 947 players and created a €918,590 prize pool. All told, a hefty 76 events will be held during the festival.

While that IPT Main Event will be playing out across the room here at the Portomaso Casino, our focus today will be on the €25,000 High Roller. The tournament, which kicks off at 12:30 p.m. local time, will feature 60-minute levels and start players with 250,000 in chips.

The three-day single reentry tournament will see players knock out eight levels on Day 1 (which means they should bag and tag at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time), though anyone looking to late register will have until the start of Day 2 (12:15 p.m. local time to be exact) to do so.

Last year, the inaugural event attracted 68 unique entries that accounted for 20 reentries, which created a prize pool of €2.156 million. Among those to cash in the event were Martin Finger (8th - €79,800), Dani Stern (5th - €166,000), Nick Petrangelo (4th - €205,900), Daniel Dvoress (3rd - €263,000), and Connor Drinan (2nd - €297,800). However, in the end it was Dzmitry Urbanovich who emerged victorious to capture the title (one of four he'd win at the EPT11 Malta) and €572,300 first-place prize. Fittingly, Urbanovich, who just finished 15th in the 2015 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event for €28,700, went on to capture EPT11 Player of the Year honors.

The latest High Roller is expected to draw some big names, but three players are already confirmed after winning their way in via a €3,000 satellite on Thursday night. That event attracted 32 players and two rebuys, meaning €98,940 was in the prize pools. Three seats were awarded to Justin Liberto, Smain Mamouni and Rasmus Vogt, while Bryn Kenney took €21,690 in cash for a fourth-place finish.

According to PokerStars, here are a total of 10 tourneys taking place at EPT Malta today, making it by far the busiest day so far. In addition to Day 2 of the €1,100 IPT Malta Main Event and the start of the €25k High Roller, there is also a €500 NL Turbo at noon, €200 PLO Hi/Lo Turbo at 2 p.m., three €100 Flipout events, and Day 1c of the €300 Malta Cup. A super satellite to the IPT High Roller starts at 11 a.m. and there is a €2,500 Hyper Turbo single rebuy Hyper Turbo super satellite for the €25k at 10 p.m. In addition, there are also 45 cash game tables running 24/7 now through October 31.

Also making a first appearance at the EPT Malta festival is a live version of PokerStars Spin & Go tournaments – hyper-turbo Sit & Go’s that feature a lottery-style prize pool multiplier. Each three-handed super-turbo tournament will feature a €50 buy-in and offer up to 20x the buy-in with a €1,000 top prize. In addition, live Flipout events, as seen on Full Tilt, will be offered.

Stay tuned as PokerNews brings you all the latest and greatest from the EPT12 Malta €25,000 High Roller!
