Australia's Michael Egan Leads Final Nine in €50,000 Super High Roller

Day 2 of the €50,000 Super High Roller has come and gone from the 2015 European Poker Tour Barcelona festival. At the start of the day, six more entries were tallied to bring the total number of buy-ins up to 99. A truly remarkable and record-breaking turnout, a prize pool of €4,753,485 was generated that will see the winner take home a hefty, jaw-dropping €1,224,000.

Fast forward to the end of the day. After 10 levels of play, just nine competitors remained. Leading the way into the third and final day was Australia's Michael Egan, as he bagged up 5,410,000 in chips. The player closest to Egan on the leaderboard was Christoph Vogelsang with 4,765,000 in chips.

Egan's climb to the top was powerfully smooth. He didn't just win one massive pot to catapult his stack to the top, but rather he raked in a high volume of larger pots to do the trick. On one such hand, Egan took out Mike McDonald in 12th place in the final level of the evening. The hand also involved Argentina's Ivan Luca that helped to contribute to the pot.

After Luca limped in from the hijack position, McDonald moved all in for 590,000 from the cutoff seat. Egan called from the small blind, and then Luca called to create a three-way affair worth about 1.8 million. The dealer fanned the {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop, and the two active players checked to see the {9-Hearts} land on the turn. Egan bet 600,000, and Luca folded. That left McDonald and the {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} up against the {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} for Egan. The river completed the board with the {9-Spades}, and Egan won the pot to send McDonald out the door in 12th place for €87,900.

Luca went on to bag up 2,580,000 in chips.

Also happening on Day 2 was the bursting of the bubble, which took place with 16 players remaining. To get down to that point, players such as Erik Seidel, Martin Jacobson, Dani Stern, Ole Schemion, Philipp Gruissem, Adrian Mateos, and John Juanda all fell, but the player most unfortunate to miss out on a payday was Russia's Viacheslav Buldygin.

Buldygin was all in on the bubble of the tournament with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds} against the {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} for Fedor Holz. The {J-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{2-Spades} board kept Holz in the lead and sent Buldygin packing as the official "bubble boy."

Holz ended up placing 11th for €99,800.

Others finishing in the money were Igor Kurganov (15th - €80,800), Stephen Chidwick (14th - €80,800), Max Altergott (13th - €87,900), and Ben Tollerene (€99,800).

Along with Egan, Vogelsang, and Luca, high-stakes talent such as Dzmitry Urbanovich, JC Alvarado, Steve O'Dwyer, Paul Newey, Sylvain Loosli, and Byron Kaverman remain. They'll all be returning for action at 12:30 p.m. local time on Monday guaranteed at least €123,600, and you can be sure to find continued coverage of it all right here on PokerNews.com. Remember that there's €1,224,000 up top and this is a final table you surely don't want to miss!

To hold you over until the finale of this one, check out an interview with another winner from the EPT Barcelona festival, former PokerNews hostess and producer, Lynn Gilmartin.

Fedor Holz, after getting knocked down to just a few big blinds, moved all in for 345,000 chips. The action folded to Ivan Luca, who tanked for quite a while before making the call.

Holz: {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Luca: {A-Spades}{6-Spades}

Ivan Luca - Mike McDonald

Ivan Luca limped in from the hijack after which Mike McDonald moved all in from the cutoff for 590,000 chips. Michael Egan made the call from the small blind, after which Luca called as well.

The flop brought out {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and both Luca and Egan checked.

On the turn the {9-Hearts} hit and Egan bet 600,000, which got Luca to fold.

McDonald was at risk with {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, and he had a flush draw, against Egan's {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}.

The river was the {9-Spades} and McDonald hit the rail in 12th place.

Max Altergott

Max Altergott shoved all in for 685,000 from the hijack. Christoph Vogelsang folded from the cutoff and Ivan Luca on the button asked for a count. He glanced over to Mike McDonald and Sylvain Loosli in the blinds, and soon found out both those players were short stacked. Luca then announced all in over the top for 2,455,000 and McDonald en Loosli both quickly folded.

Max Altergott: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Ivan Luca: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

The {6-Diamonds} in the window just about ended it for Altergott and the {4-Spades} and {K-Clubs} that accompanied the six on the flop didn't help too much. By the time the {K-Hearts} hit the turn, Altergott was done for and he got up from the table. The {5-Hearts} completed the board and Altergott said "Good game guys!"

Altergott hit the rail in 13th place, taking home €87,900. The remaining 12 players are guaranteed €99,800.

Igor Kurganov has just been knocked out in 15th place, and his chips were pushed towards Australia's Michael Egan who now holds the chip lead.

Kurganov raised from the hijack to 90,000a and Egan called from the cutoff, followed by two calls from Max Altergott and Christoph Vogelsang in the blinds.

The flop brought out {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and both blinds checked to Kurganov who bet 250,000, only Egan called.

On the turn the {5-Diamonds} hit and Kurganov moved all in for 800,000 chips and Egan called.

Egan: {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Kurganov: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The river brought the {Q-Clubs} and Kurganov hit the rail in 15th place after having re-entered into this event. After this hand Sylvain Loosli was moved to Table 2 in order to balance the remaining two tables.

Egan check-called a bet of 265,000 on the flop, and the turn brought the {J-Spades}.

Once more Egan checked, and Holz continued with another bet of 440,000. Egan responded by moving all in for 1,540,000 total, and Holz went into the tank for several minutes.

Ultimately Holz folded, leaving himself with 1,950,000 while Egan is now among the chip leaders.

Viacheslav Buldygin open pushed his last 715,000 from early position and action folded to Fedor Holz who called instantly. They had to wait till the action was done on the other table, and then they finally tabled their hands.

Holz had the better hand holding {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, Buldygin was trailing with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

The flop came {J-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Buldygin needed some help, and he needed it quick.

The {K-Clubs} on the turn paired up Holz but it gave Buldygin a gutshot. The {2-Spades} on the river wasn't one of the cards Buldygin was looking for and the Russian player exited in 16th place.

With Buldygin's departure, the remaining 15 players are now in the money, guaranteed €80,800.

Wow, Wow, Wow! Full Double for Urbanovich to 3.6 Million

Nível 15 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Jason Les - Dzmitry Urbanovich
Jason Les - Dzmitry Urbanovich

"Sometimes you eat the bear... and sometimes the bear eats you." — The Big Lebowski

Tournament poker can be a cruel, unruly endeavor. At times, the little bit of luck involved in the game can get the best of you despite how well you may play. Just ask Phil Hellmuth how that goes. Other times, it's just the unfortunate situation of running a very big hand into another very big hand when there's not much that could've be done to avoid it. For Jason Les, he fell victim to the latter after a crazy cooler of a hand against Dzmitry Urbanovich.

The action started with pay folding to JC Alvarado on the button. He raised to 60,000, and then Les opted to three-bet to 180,000. In the big blind was Urbanovich, and he took his time before placing out a four-bet to 399,000. Alvarado quickly ducked out of the way, but then Les went into the tank. After a minute or two, Les announced that he was all in for around 1.9 million total. Urbanovich quickly looked back at his cards, then called, creating a massive pot of over 3.6 million in chips.

When the cards were revealed, Urbanovich tabled the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} to do one better than Les' {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. Following a runout of {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{10-Clubs}, Urbanovich had won the hand and the counting of the stacks began.

Urbanovich's stack was counted down to 1.793 million — a massive amount for a full double. Les had just over 100,000 more than that and sent over the chips to award the young Polish star his due. Then on the next hand, the rest of his stack was passed Max Altergott's way.

Altergott had opened with a raise and Les went all in. Altergott made the call for the extra bit of chips and displayed the {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}. Les had the {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs}. The board came {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, and Les was eliminated.
