Ping San Chan Leads After Day 1 of Record-Breaking EPT High Roller

On Friday, Season 12 of the European Poker Tour continued from Casino Barcelona with the €10,300 High Roller event. Players turned out for 10 60-minute levels of play, and at the end of the day it was Ping San Chan who bagged the chip lead with 367,500.

By choosing to participate in this tournament, each player helped to form EPT history. With the massive player turnout, this event became the largest of its kind. At the end of the night, the clock read that there were a total of 479 entires over the course of the first day. This smashed the previous record of 393 entries, which was set by this very event in Barcelona last year. What's more is that the field size is expected to increases even further, as registration and reentry remain open until the start of Day 2.

While Chan bagged the top stack in the room, others are hot on his heels heading into the second day of play. France's Nathan Gozlan finished in second place overall, and rounding out the top three was Wilfried Harig.

The field remains stacked with familiar faces and notable professionals, plus we could see a few more enter tomorrow after skipping out on Day 1. Those who had a successful first day included Adrian Mateos (237,800), Aleksandr Denisov (223,000), Fedor Holz (211,800), Leo Fernandez (189,500), Vanessa Selbst (182,400), Nicholas Rampone (174,000), 2014 WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson (161,500), Vitaly Lunkin (141,100), Benny Spindler (138,500), and Christoph Vogelsang (125,900).

While these players thrived throughout the day, others were not as fortunate. Some of those sent to the rail throughout the course of the day included 2013 WSOP Main Event champion Ryan Riess, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Farid Jattin, Simon Ravnsbaek, Max Silver, and David Vamplew. If those players haven't already done so, they will have the option to reenter, but the event only allows for a single reentry.

Play will resume on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. local time, when the returning 214 players will be joined on the felt by any late registrants. The tournament is schedule to play another full 10 levels, with an early stop coming only if an official final table of eight is reached.

Be sure to return to PokerNews for all of the latest from this record-breaking tournament.

Ben Tollerene and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst were heads up with the completed board reading {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Tollerene checked the river, prompting Selbst to slide out a bet of 6,200.

Tollerene thought for a moment before cutting out a check-raise to 25,000. This was enough to put Selbst all in, and she called for her own tournament life of roughly 24,000. Tollerene tabled {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for quad deuces and the nuts. Selbst let out a laugh as she showed {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} to the table for a turned full house of queens full. She made her exit from the tournament area while Tollerene brought his stack to approximately 60,500.

Will the €10,300 High Roller See 400+ Entries? We'll Find Out Today

Today marks the start of the €10,300 High Roller from the 2015 PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona. Kicking off at 12:30 p.m. local time, Day 1 action will see the first 10 levels on the structure sheet played out, starting with the 100/200/25 level and finishing with the 800/1,600/200 level. Players will begin with 50,000 in chips and levels will last one hour each. If all goes according to the schedule, play should end at 12:45 a.m.

Over the years, this event has proven to be quite the attraction. Last year, it drew a whopping 393 entries to the felt. That event was won by Belarus' Ihar Soika for a huge €747,200. Soika defeated Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier heads up to take the title.

Given all that's happened at this season's EPT Barcelona festival, it is highly expected that the €10,300 High Roller will attract another large field. Plus with the single reentry option, players will have the chance to fire more than one bullet and juice up the prize pool.

Every year this event has grown, and a field size of over 400 total entries wouldn't come of a surprise. According to statistics from HendonMob.com, here's how this event has looked throughout history since its inception in 2010:

One should expect all of the well-known high-stakes players to be in the mix, including Mercier, Isaac Haxton, Steve O'Dwyer, Tobias Reinkemeier, Ankush Mandavia, Philipp Gruissem, and many more. Martin Finger is also expected to play, fresh off his victory in the €25,500 Single-Day High Roller last night where he won €865,900.

We'll also likely see Liv Boeree and Igor Kurganov in the field. Both of whom were featured in the following PokerNews video with Sarah Herring where the duo goes flyboarding.

Also of note, the registration and reentry period will remain open until the start of Day 2, allowing for plenty of time for additional entries to grow the field. With that, stay tuned for all of the action coming your way right on these pages from the 2015 EPT Barcelona €10,300 High Roller.
