Who Will Take the $1.8 Million First Place Prize?

The best players in the world, no exception, came to Monaco for the 2014 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino EPT Grand Final €100,000 Super High Roller. The cash game guys that battle each other online for the highest stakes, and the players that won the most money in tournaments all over the world, everybody came to the sovereign city-state on the French Riviera.

Phil Ivey was talking to Patrik Antonius, Daniel Negreanu chatted it up with Jonathan Duhamel. Antonio Esfandiari squared off with Vanessa Selbst and Isaac Haxton went to battle with the German High Rollers Tobias Reinkemeier, Fabian Quoss and Philipp Gruissem.

All those guys didn't make it to the final table though. The 62 entries (50 unique, 12 reentries) made for a €6,015,240 prize pool and just eight players remain right now. They're in the money but not all are guaranteed to make a profit just yet. Though they take home a minimum of €241,000, that would still leave Daniel Colman €59,000 short as he bought back in twice after busting his first €100,000 bullet on Day 1.

The final table is dominated by the group of Asian business men who made their way to the Super High Roller on European soil for the first time. Paul Phua, Lo Shing Fung and Richard Yong proved they can play with the best here in the Principality of Monaco. Flanking the Asian business men are the Americans with Cates, Colman and Busquet all still in contention. To complete the final table there's short stack Igor Kurganov and of course Ole Schemion. We say 'of course' as he's in the form of his life and he might just be the best no-limit hold'em tournament player in the world at the moment. Schemion is on fire with huge cashes everywhere. He won the €10,000 High Roller in Sanremo just two weeks ago, and won the €10,000 satellite to this very €100,000 event to keep himself in form.

Kurganov Doubles Through Phua

Hand #22: Igor Kurganov open shoved for 164,000 under the gun with {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. Under the gun plus two it was Paul Phua who showed interest. Phua had {A-Spades}{K-Spades} and isolated to 364,000. All other players folded and the first all in show down was at hand.

"I am confident my short stack will go on forever" Kurganov laughed.

And well, so far he's right. The {2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} on the flop didn't help him, but the {Q-Clubs} on the turn did. The river was a blank with an eight and Kurganov doubled up.

He's still the short stack, but he has some breathing room.

Kurganov Grabs the Chip Lead!

Hand #62: Lo completed from the small blind with {Q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and Colman in the big blind checked his {6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}{5-Spades} on the flop and Lo bet out 80,000. Colman, having flopped nothing really, folded after some thinking.

Hand #63: Action folded again to Lo on the button. Lo with {5-Hearts}{2-Hearts} raised to 130,000. Kurganov in the big blind with {A-Clubs}{6-Clubs} made the call.

{6-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{K-Hearts} and Kurganov checked. Lo continued for 130,000 and Kurganov made the call. After the dealer burned, the turn came the {6-Hearts} giving Kurganov trips and Lo the flush draw. Kurganov checked again and Lo bet out a hefty 400,000. Kurganov made the call to grow the pot to 1,385,000.

The river was a brick with the {4-Spades} and Kurganov checked for the third time. Lo thought about it for some time. He contemplated his action for a good three minutes, and then bet out 600,000. Kurganov took his time as well. After two minutes he raised all in. Lo didn't make too much show and folded rather quickly.

Kurganov started out as by far the shortest stack with not much more than 10 big blinds, but he's now the chip leader!

Hand #69: In the first hand back from the break, Igor Kurganov opened for 125,000 holding the {a-Spades}{k-Clubs} and Dan Cates just flatted from the cutoff with the {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}. Olivier Busquet got his extreme short stack all in from the small blind with the {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, and after the big folded, the three players saw a flop of {j-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}.

Kurganov check-called a bet of 135,000, and then both players checked the {7-Spades} turn. When the {10-Clubs} completed the board on the river, Kurganov checked and then folded to a bet from Cates.

"Do you have a full house?" Busquet immediately asked. Indeed Cates did, and that was the end of Busquet.

Hand #72: Colman on the button with {J-Spades}{J-Hearts} made it 125,000. Ole Schemion in the big blind with {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} raised it up to 335,000. Colman shoved allin and Schemion made the call for his tournament life.

Schemion wasn't happy calling, and wasn't happy when he saw the hands. He did point out he still had two live flush draws, but it wasn't meant to be.

The {J-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{Q-Spades} on the flop gave Colman a set, but Schemion the open ended. The {7-Diamonds} looked like something, but changed nothing. Schemion still needed an eight or king but wouldn't get it; {7-Clubs} on the river.

Ole Schemion eliminated in seventh place for €307,000.

PokerNews GPI Update Episode #16: Negreanu Plummets

Daniel Negreanu plummets in the GPI
Daniel Negreanu plummets in the GPI

Daniel Negreanu plummeted out of the top 10 of the Global Poker Index this week, and Rich and Eric discuss that along with a bit of shakeup in the 2014 GPI Player of the Year race.

The two also offer a little advice for the Fantasy Poker Manager game on Facebook. This week's "buy low" candidate is a very familiar face, and the "sell high" is a favorite of the duo with a very big price tag.

Paul Phua Eliminated in 6th Place (€385,000)

Nível 21 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Paul Phua
Paul Phua

Hand #113: The first hand after the break it was Igor Kurganov who raised it up to 210,000 with {A-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} under the gun. He took down the blinds and antes as everyone folded.

Hand #114: The second hand after the break saw Phua shove all in for 1,280,000 under the gun. Action folded to Daniel Colman in the small blind who asked how much it exactly was. He then called and Korganov folded his big blind.

Phua showed {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and had to battle it out with Colman's {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}. He still had 42% but wouldn't make his hand. The {10-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop improved Colman but Phua did now have a gutshot. The {7-Clubs} on the turn gave him an extra card to hit, but the {K-Diamonds} on the river wasn't the one he needed.

Paul Phua was eliminated in sixth place, taking home €385,000. The remaining players are now guaranteed €493,340.

Hand #124: Cates opened for 200,000 under the gun with {10-Spades}{7-Spades}. Lo shoved 1,260,000 from the button with {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Kurganov in the big blind had {A-Spades}{J-Hearts} and made the call, Cates folded.

The flop brought a bit for both: {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. Igor Kurganov hit top pair but Lo flopped the flush draw. The {4-Diamonds} on the turn was a red card, but not a heart. "Kurganov has just one more card to fade" said commentator Joe Stapleton.

Kurganov succeeded in that mission: {Q-Spades} on the river.

With that final card Rono Lo exited in 5th place for €493,340. The remaining four players are now guaranteed €637,600.

Hand #133: Daniel Colman raised to 240,000 from the button with the {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Dan Cates defended from the big with the {k-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. The {9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop gave Cates the lead, but both players checked. The {2-Diamonds} turn saw Cates fire out 340,000, Colman called, and the {6-Hearts} completed the board on the river. Cates checked, as did Coleman, and "Jungleman" won with the better two pair.

Hand #134: Dan Coleman raised to 200,000 under the gun with the {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Richard Yong defended the big blind with the {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. The {7-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop saw Yong check and Colman bet 200,000 with his set. Yong then moved all in for 1.2 million drawing dead and Coleman snap-called. There was a 2% chance of a chop, but that didn't happen as the {9-Hearts} appeared on the turn followed by the {3-Spades} on the river.

Yong took his leave in fourth place for €637,600, while the remaining three players are guaranteed at least a €842,300.

Hand #179: Daniel COlman moved all in from the small blind and Igor Kurganov snap-called off for 1.715 million from the big blind.

Colman: {q-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Kurganov: {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}

Kurganov got it in good and had a 58% chance of doubling on the hand, and that jumped to a 3-1 lead when the flop came down {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. The {9-Clubs} turn have Colman some more outs, and much to Kurganov's dismay the {8-Spades} river was one of them.

Thanks to the deal, Kurganov, who was all smiles as he made his way over to Liv Boeree on the rail, walked away with €1,128,300. Not too shabby considering he was the extreme short stack at the start of the day.
