Tony Mladenovski Grabs 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1c Lead

Nível 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Tony Mladenovski

With a stack of 187,400 in chips, Tony Mladenovski finished atop the final starting day's leaderboard at the 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event in Crown Casino Melbourne. He isn't the player to catch heading into Wednesday's Day 2 of the Southern Hemisphere's most prestigious poker tournament as that position belongs to Mustapha Kanit, who bagged up 215,000 on Day 1b.

Day 1c was a day that saw the largest group of competitors take to the felt. A total of 322 players signed up, pushing the total number of entries up to over 700 again.

After seven levels of action, the final starting flight came to a close in the very early hours of Wednesday morning at Crown Melbourne. It was a day that saw poker stars David Peters, Alex Keating, Connor Drinan, Fatima Moreira de Melo and Winfred Yu hit the rail.

Meanwhile, players like Jay Tan (136,300) Sam Grafton (111,400) Joel Douaglin (110,900) Artur Koren (83,600), Craig McCorkell (82,300), Charlie Carrel (34,300 - who was down to under one big blind) and Mike Watson (16,600) advanced.

High Roll Crusher Connor Drinan was eliminated in Level 5 by Tony Dunst when he committed all his chips in pre-flop holding pocket kings and found himself in front against Dunst’s ace-king. However, an ace would flop sending the American pro to the rail. Tony Dunst, last year's runner-up, advanced with 71,300 in chips. The sole player that beat him, 2016 Aussie Millions champion Ari Engel, also made it through and will commence Day 2 with 60,000 in chips.

2014 Aussie Millions champion Ami Barer played his last hand when he called off his short stack pre-flop with pocket queens and found himself up against ace-queen. Two aces would flop and that would be the end of Barer’s day and he had to give up all hope of becoming the first ever two-time champion.

Of the 337 that entered on Day 1c, around 177 survived the day. Those survivors will combine with the 195 total remaining entrants from Day 1a and Day 1b to form the complete Day 2 field for Wednesday, but more names could be added to the mix because late registration will remain open until the end of the first level of play on Day 2.

Day 2 will begin at 12:30 p.m. local time, and we here at PokerNews will happily see you then.

Just before the break Ami Barer was eliminated from the tournament. Tony Hachem was more than happy to fill us in on the details.

The action started with the 2014 champion raising to 3,000 from under the gun before the player in middle position moved all in over the top. The decision folded back around to Barer who called for his remaining 9,000.

Barer had the best hand until the board ran out {j-}{a-}{a-}{q-}{2-} giving his opponent the more dominant full house and therefore winning hand.

Tollerene Shoots Down Sluiter

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Raemon Sluiter
Raemon Sluiter

We caught the action on a flop of {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} in a heads-up pot between Dutchman Raemon Sluiter and Ben Tollerene just as Sluiter led out for a bet of 2,300. Tollerene looked on impassively before counting out the call and carefully placing it in out on the baize.

The {a-Clubs} turn completed a possible club flush and Sluiter bet out 6,600 leaving himself 7,000 behind. Tollerene did not miss this fact and after thinking it over, smooth called once again taking play to the {6-Clubs} river.

Sluiter shoved for his remaining 7,000 and Tollerene beat him into the pot. The Dutchman showed {j-Clubs}{5-Spades} for a flush but this was not enough to beat Tollerene’s turned full house and the US pro flipped over {a-Hearts}{a-Spades} to send Sluiter to the exit.

Sluiter's girlfriend Fatima Moreira de Melo has also been eliminated from the event. She was down to about 25 big blinds or so and got it in with queens to ace-king. She did not survive the encounter and had headed to the rail just before Sluiter.

Douaglin Eliminates Another to Take the Chip Lead

Nível 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Joel Douaglin
Joel Douaglin

After earlier eliminating a player from the tournament with pocket aces and doubling-up, Joel Douaglin has repeated the same punishment on yet another player.

Arriving at the table we found both Douaglin and his opponent trade raises until both had committed all their stacks.

Douaglin: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}
Opponent: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

The all in player was in for 65,700 and was at risk against Douaglin's over pair who had him covered.

Douaglin stepped up from the table and even turned around as the river card was exposed on the {j-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Clubs} board before taking down the pot and storming into the chip lead.

Douaglin is no stranger to the Aussie Millions main event after finishing in 3rd place in 2015 (eventually won by Manny Stavropoulos) and has put himself in a great position for another potentially deep run.

Alex Keating Eliminated

Alex Keating, who you might remember from his deep run in the WSOP Main Event last year (and his incredible beard and table talk), has just been eliminated. He got up from the table wishing his former table mates good luck, and was kind enough to fill us in on some details of his bust out hand.

Keating was down to just 7,000 and reshoved with {A-}{J-} in a button versus cutoff situation. His opponent called with {A-}{K-} and the board brought no help to Keating.

"See you next time!" Keating said.

Chidwick Hooks One

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Stephen Chidwick
Stephen Chidwick

We caught the high-rolling Stephen Chidwick involved in a hand against a tablemate on a fairly wet flop of {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. There had obviously been some preflop action as the pot was already quite sizable.

As the out of position player in the hand Chidwick had led out for a bet of what looked to be 1,400 or so and his opponent, sitting on the button, had three-bet to 4,000.

Chidwick mulled it over for a minute or so before tossing in the call and the dealer burned and turned {k-Spades} which brought checks from both players.

The {8-Hearts} river brought a 2,500 bet from Chidwick and a call from the button and the cards were turned over, Chidwick’s {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs} in front of his opponent’s {10-}{10-} and the Brit climbed to over 50,000 after the hand.

Reigning Champ Makes Broadway

Nível 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Ari Engel
Ari Engel

Last year’s Aussie Millions Main Event champion Ari Engel is in the building and chipping up after making a Broadway straight against an unfortunate tablemate.

It went three-way to the flop of {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and after the big blind checked, Engel bet 750. The third player called and with the big blind out of the way the dealer presented the {k-Diamonds} turn.

Engel kept up the aggression with another barrel for 2,000 and was called again before the {9-Diamonds} river completed the board. Engel opted for a bet of 4,000 on the end and was paid off with his {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for Broadway.

His opponent let out a sigh of disbelief and muttered about having two pair as the pot was pushed to Engel.
