Sontheimer Leads Day 1 of Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge, ‘Recreational’ Player Fedor Holz in Second

Nível 9 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Day 1 of the 2017 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge attracted a small but high caliber field of 18 entries, including reentries by Mikita Badziakouski and David Peters. That created an A$1,764,000 (~$1.33 million USD) prize pool that will be distributed among the top three players with the eventual winner taking home AU$882,000 (~$667,744 USD).

The player best positioned to take down the top prize is Germany's Steffen Sontheimer, who leads the final seven with a stack of 451,000. Sontheimer has already cashed twice at the 2017 Aussie Millions with a 39th place in the AU$1,150 Opening Event and a 17th place finish in the AU$1,150 Six Max Event.

The six others still in contention for the title include high-stakes specialist Fedor Holz – widely regarded as one of the best online and live tournament players in the modern game – Nick Petrangelo, Sam Trickett, Mike Watson, David Peters and David Steicke.

The start of the day saw eight entrants begin play on a single table, though the arrival of Mike Watson and Alexandros Kolonias saw play pause for a redraw as the field was split over two five-handed tables. This increased to 13 players as Germans Fedor Holz, Rainer Kempe, and Steffen Sontheimer arrived shortly before Level 2, all of whom saved themselves AU$1,000 in rake for joining early.

Despite Rainer Kempe taking an early hit at the hands of Holz after a set over set cooler shortly after the first break, it would be Dan Shak who would become the first casualty. Shak got all his chips in with king-queen suited against Greece’s Alexandros Kolonias. Unfortunately for Shak, Kolonius had spiked a set of nines on a king-high board to send the US player crashing out.

Kempe followed Shak to the rail shortly afterward when his short-stacked shove with queen-jack suited ran into Fedor Holz's ace-jack on a jack-high board.

The field climbed back up to 12-strong with the late arrival of Sam Trickett. However, this was whittled down to a single eight-handed table with the eliminations of Mikita Badziakouski, Charlie Carrel, David Peters and Stephen Chidwick in quick succession shortly before the dinner break.

Both Peters and Badziakouski chose to re-enter following the break, with US player Bryn Kenney and Hong Kong-based Australian David Steicke also joining to bring the field back up to 12.

This quickly became 11 with the elimination of 2016 $100,000 Challenge runner-up Ben Tollerene after the latter's pocket jacks were out-flopped by the ace-jack of Kolonias. Nick Petrangelo thinned the field further when his pocket queens held against Sam Greenwood’s pocket nines to send the Canadian to the rail.

Mikita Badziakouski busted for a second time after moving all in with a queen-high back door flush draw on the turn over the top of a Sam Trickett double barrel on a ten-high board. Trickett time banked twice before calling with ace-ten, which held to bring play down to a single nine-handed table once more.

Trickett busted Bryn Kenney shortly afterward when his king-jack out-flopped Kenney’s ace-queen after the latter moved all in from the cutoff for his last 33,000. Alexandros Kolonias followed Kenney to the exit not long afterward when his pocket deuces lost a race to David Peters’ ace-nine off-suit to take play seven-handed. When action resumes all remaining players receive three brand new time breaker chips, though any left over from the previous day's play do not carry over.

To allow for the players to participate in the Aussie Millions Main Event, the final table will be on hiatus until Saturday, Jan. 28. On that day, the final seven will return at 2:10 p.m. local time to play down to a winner. Of course, the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action, which will also be live-streamed on Jason Somerville's runitup.tv.

Alexandros Kolonias Eliminated by David Peters

Nível 9 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Alexandros Kolonias
Alexandros Kolonias

A scant few hands after the departure of Bryn Kenney and there is another casualty. This time it is Alexandros Kolonias on the chopping block.

After David Peters opened to 9,000 from the cutoff a short-stacked Kolonias thought about his options for 15 seconds and then moved all-in for 38,000 with Peters making the call fairly swiftly.

Alexandros Kolonias: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
David Peters: {a-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Kolonius’ pocket deuces were in front of Peters’ ace-high when the flop came down {k-Hearts}{q-}{3-Diamonds}. The {k-Diamonds} turn gave Peters’ more outs and he duly hit one of them when the {9-Diamonds} landed on the river to send Kolonias to the rail and there are now seven players left. Play will either finish at the end of the level or when the next bust out occurs depending on which comes first.

Bryn Kenney Eliminated by Sam Trickett

Nível 9 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Bryn Kenney

Bryn Kenney was one of the last players to enter this event in a batch of four players that signed up in the dinner break, but now he's out.

He got his last 33,000 in with {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} in from the cutoff versus Sam Trickett in early position.

Bryn Kenney: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Sam Trickett: {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades}

Kenney was ahead but, as these things go sometimes, that didn't last long. The {J-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop helped Trickett in front and he remained there with the {5-Diamonds} on the turn and {4-Hearts} on the river. Eight players left.

Sam Greenwood got the last of his chips in with {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} up against the {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} of Nick Petrangelo. The {3-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Clubs} runout wasn't all too exciting and Greenwood exited the tournament area.

With now just 10 players remaining, Mike Watson has moved tables to balance.

Ben Tollerene Eliminated by Alexandros Kolonias

Ben Tollerene
Ben Tollerene

Ben Tollerene got his last 58,700 in before the flop from the hijack up against big blind Alexandros Kolonias.

Tollerene was in excellent position to double up as he dominated with {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} against the {A-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} of Kolonias.

The {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Spades} flop, however, wasn't the flop Tollerene was hoping for and the {5-Clubs} on the turn and {9-Spades} on the river denied him a comeback.

Stephen Chidwick Eliminated by Mike Watson

Stephen Chidwick raised to 4,500 and Mike Watson called from the cutoff. Ben Tollerene over called from the big blind and checked on {Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Chidwick checked as well and Watson bet 8,000. Tollerene called before Chidwick shoved all in for about 60,000 or so. Watson used his 30 seconds to decide to shove all in over the top. Tollerene folded.

Stephen Chidwick: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Mike Watson: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}

The {10-Hearts} on the turn and {6-Hearts} on the river were blanks and Chidwick departed already well into the break.

David Peters Eliminated by Fedor Holz

Mike Watson raised his cutoff and one position over, on the button, it was Fedor Holz three-betting to 17,500. Small blind David Peters shoved for 56,700 and the big blind and Watson folded. Holz thought about it for maybe 20 seconds before he called.

David Peters: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Fedor Holz: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}

Peters was in good position to double to starting stack, but it wasn't going to be. Holz flopped a set on {3-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and did not get in trouble after that with the {A-Clubs} on the turn and {8-Clubs} on the river.

Down to just 22,900 in chips, small blind Charlie Carrel shoved all in over the top of the button raise of Mike Watson. Fedor Holz folded his big blind but Watson, somewhat reluctantly, called.

Charlie Carrel: {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Mike Watson: {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Watson did not immediately hit the flop, but the {6-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{K-Spades} flop did give him a lot of extra outs. The {5-Diamonds} on the turn was one of his initial ones and the {9-Diamonds} on the river was so too. Carrel eliminated, Watson a bit richer.

Mikita Badziakouski Eliminated by Steffen Sontheimer

Action folded to Steffen Sontheimer in the small blind and he open-raised. Big blind Mikita Badziakouski shoved for a little over 60,000 and Sontheimer called.

Mikita Badziakouski: {5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}
Steffen Sontheimer: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

The board brought nothing for Badziakouski with {4-Clubs}{J-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

Badziaksouski jokingly gave his three remaining time breaker chips to Petrangelo and got up and made his exit.

Rainer Kempe Eliminated

The hand right after Dan Shak's departure saw three players take a flop of {J-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. As all of them decided to check, the {5-Diamonds} hit the turn. Holz (hijack) checked again and Kempe (cutoff) bet 4,100. Tollerene (ghost button) folded, Holz called.

The {8-Spades} completed the board and Holz checked again. Kempe shoved all in for the few remaining chips he had left and Holz called so quick we couldn't count how much Kempe was all in for.

Kempe showed {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} but was beat as Holz tabled {A-Clubs}{J-Spades} for the same pair of jacks but with the better kicker.
