Day 2 of the 2016 Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge – a tournament that attracted 122 entries (100 unique + 22 reentries) and created a AUD$2.928 million prize pool – saw 26 players return to action, but by the end of the night just one remained as Chance Kornuth vanquished all others to capture the AU$790,560 first-place prize, the second-biggest score of his career.

It marked the third 2016 Aussie Millions cash for Kornuth, who finished ninth in Event #6: No-Limit Hold'em Six Max for AU$9,415 and eighth in Event #3: No-Limit Hold'em Shot Clock Shootout for AU$4,520. Kornuth, who won a World Series of Poker bracelet back in 2010, was also less than two weeks away from finishing seventh in the PCA $25,000 High Roller for $192,780.

The win was made all the more special for Kornuth as he was down to just 5,100 at the 800/1,600 blind level on Day 1. He found himself all in in six of the next seven hands, winning each time to put himself back in contention. Kornuth said he was 50/50 to play the $100,000 Challenge, which is slated to start in a mere 10 hours.

When action resumed on Saturday afternoon, a dozen players needed to hit the rail before the money, and among those to leave empty handed were 2015 GPI Player of the Year Byron Kaverman, online star Daniel "Jungle Man" Cates, EPT12 Malta champ Niall Farrell, and Australia's Dean Spagnuolo, who finished as the bubble boy when his pocket sixes failed to hold in a standard race situation.

From there, the in-the-money finishes began to mount on the way to the final table of seven. Those who fell short were Team PokerStars Pros Yaxi Zhu (14th – AU$58,560) and Eugene Katchalov (10th – AU$87,840), as well as German pros Dominik Nitsche (9th – AU$87,840) and Benny Spindler (8th – AU$109,800).

It took several hours for the next player to fall, but it happened when Michael Egan, the last Australian left in the field, ran pocket jacks into aces. After Phanlert Sukonthachartnant and Oliver Price were eliminated in sixth and fifth place respectively, Steve O'Dwyer, just over a week removed from winning the 2016 PCA $50K Single-Day High Roller for $945,495, followed them out the door in fourth.

Not long after, Jason Les hit the rail after running two pair into Kornuth's set, which set up a near even heads-up match between Kornuth and Igor Kurganov, who was looking to win the title for the second time in four years after taking it down in 2013, albeit in a field of just 30 runners for a top prize of AU$275,000.

The two jostled back and forth for a bit, but before long Kurganov pulled out to a healthy lead only to have Kornuth battle back. Eventually Kornuth had Russia's all-time money leader on the ropes, and he delivered the knockout blow after both players flopped a pair.

Igor Kurganov - 2nd Place
Igor Kurganov - 2nd Place

In what would be the final hand of the tournament, Igor Kurganov raised to 100,000 from the button and Chance Kornuth called to see a {6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds} flop. Kornuth checked, Kurganov bet 170,000, and Kornuth check-raised all in. Kurganov thought about it for 30 seconds or so and then called off his remaining 900,000.

Kornuth: {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Kurganov: {6-Hearts}{a-Hearts}

Kurganov needed some help to stay alive, but it never came as the {9-Diamonds} blanked on the turn followed by the {4-Diamonds} on the river.

Jason Les Eliminated in 3rd Place (AU$351,360)

Nível 22 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Jason Les
Jason Les

Igor Kurganov raised to 90,000 from the button and Chance Kornuth calmly called from the small blind. This made Jason Les add the needed chips as well and the three of them took a flop.

All three checked on {9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} and the {2-Diamonds} was seen for free. Kornuth bet out 150,000 and Les made the call, leaving himself about 410,000 behind. Igor Kurganov folded.

The {K-Hearts} fell on the river and Kornuth moved 700,000 forward, more than enough to put Les to the decision for all of his chips. Les frowned, and put a couple of 25,000 chips in to indicate he was calling.

Kornuth instantly showed {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} for the rivered set, giving Les the bad news. Les mucked but the dealer turned over his {9-Hearts}{2-Hearts} anyway.

Jason Les takes home AU$351,360. Igor Kurganov (80 big blinds) and Chance Kornuth (73 big blinds) now head to head for the title. The winner takes home AU$790,560, the runner up gets AU$541,680.

Steve O'Dwyer Eliminated in 4th Place (AU$263,520)

Nível 22 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Steve O'Dwyer - 4th Place
Steve O'Dwyer - 4th Place

Steve O'Dwyer, who just over a week ago won the 2016 PCA $50K Single-Day High Roller for $945,495, moved all in under the gun for his last 121,000 and Igor Kurganov three-bet to 252,000 from the button, which inspired both blinds to fold.

O'Dwyer: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}
Kurganov: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

It was a bad spot for O'Dwyer, and the {5-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Diamonds} flop didn't do him any favors. The {10-Diamonds} turn left him drawing dead, and his elimination became official when the {8-Hearts} was run out on the river for good measure.

Oliver Price Eliminated in 5th Place (AU$190,320)

Nível 21 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Oliver Price - 5th Place
Oliver Price - 5th Place

Chance Kornuth raised from the button and Oliver Price defended his big blind. Price proceeded to check-call a bet of 75,000 on the {8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} flop, and then he checked after the dealer burned and turned the {6-Spades}. Kornuth moved all in, and Price used two hands to slide in his stack of 380,000.

Price: {q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}
Kornuth: {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}

Price held top pair with a gutshot, and he needed to improve as he was behind the pocket rockets of Kornuth. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {K-Clubs}. Price missed and was felled in fifth place for AU$190,320.

Phanlert Sukonthachartnant
Phanlert Sukonthachartnant

Igor Kurganov opened for 70,000 from first position and action folded to Phanlert Sukonthachartnant in the small blind. The APPT 2015 ACOP High Roller champion moved all in for 228,000 and Steve O'Dwyer in the big blind asked for a count. As soon as he got it, he flat called. Kurganov knew enough and folded his hand to leave the two of them to it.

Phanlert Sukonthachartnant: {9-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Steve O'Dwyer: {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

The {J-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{5-Spades} flop favored O'Dwyer but Sukonthachartnant had a live draw. The {10-Clubs} on the turn gave him some additional outs but the {K-Diamonds} on the river wasn't one of them.

Sukonthachartnant, truly one of the biggest names in poker, made his exit in 6th place for AU$131,760. The remaining 5 players are now guaranteed a pay day of AU$190,320.

Michael Egan Eliminated in 7th Place (AU$109,800)

Michael Egan

Michael Egan made it 50,000 from middle position and action folded to Jason Les in the small blind. Les three-bet to 122,000 and Oliver Price immediately folded from the big blind.

While the dealer was still busy counting how much the three-bet was, Egan had already moved all in for 431,000. Les, who had Egan just barely covered, called.

Jason Les: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}
Michael Egan: {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The board ran out and uneventful {K-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Egan made his exit in 7th place, taking home AU$109,800.

The remaining 6 players are now guaranteed AU$131,760.

Benny Spindler Eliminated in 8th Place (AU$109,800)

Nível 18 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Benny Spindler
Benny Spindler

Benny Spindler just lost a big pot with pocket jacks where he suffered a bad beat as his opponent hit a set. Pocket jacks proved no good again just now.

Chance Kornuth shoved all in under the gun for his last 193,000. Action folded to Benny Spindler in the big blind who had just under that and he wasted no time calling.

Chance Kornuth: {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}
Benny Spindler: {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}

The {10-Spades}{Q-Spades}{5-Spades} was flop was already looking bad for Spindler, though he still had the best hand for now. The {6-Hearts} on the turn was a complete blank but the {9-Spades} on the river was one of the cards Spindler didn't want to see. Kornuth hit his flush and Spindler was eliminated.

Benny Spindler made his exit in 8th place, taking home AU$109,800. The remaining 7 players are now merged to one table.

Dominik Nitsche - 9th Place
Dominik Nitsche - 9th Place

In the very next hand after Eugene Katchalov was eliminated, Steve O'Dwyer raised to 37,000 under the gun and when action reached Dominik Nitsche in the small blind, he three-bet all in for approximately 200,000 total. Chance Kornuth folded from the big blind and O'Dwyer snap-called.

O'Dwyer: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}
Nitsche: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Nitsche was on the wrong end of the cooler, and he paid for it with his tournament life after the board ran out a dry {j-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}.

Just one more player needs to fall before the final table of seven is established.

Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Eugene Katchalov opened to 35,000 from the button with 457,000 behind. Igor Kurganov in the small blind carefully cut out 95,000 and slid his three-bet forward. Dominik Nitsche instantly folded and the action was back on Katchalov. He moved all in and Kurganov called.

Eugene Katchalov: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}
Igor Kurganov: {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The flop came {J-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Katchalov and Kurganov shook hands. "Good game man" Kurganov said to Katchalov.

Katchalov still had a small chance of doubling up but as soon as the {4-Spades} hit the turn, it really was all over. The {8-Hearts} on the river was of no importance to anyone anymore, and Katchalov headed for the exit just before the start of the (45-minute) dinner break.
