On Saturday, after four-day hiatus so players could participate in the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event, the six finalists remaining in the $100,000 Challenge – a tournament that began with 41 entries (30 unique + 11 reentries) and featured a AU$4,018,000 prize pool — returned to the Crown Casino in Melbourne to play down to a winner.

After a short four hours of play, it was German high roller Fabian Quoss who defeated all others to capture the AU$1,446,480 (just over $1 million) top prize.

It marked the second-largest score of Quoss' career behind the $1.6 million he won for taking down the 2014 PCA $100,000 Super High Roller.

Quoss had come close to winning an Aussie Millions Challenge title twice before, albeit in the $250,000 Challenge. The first time he flirted with the title in that tournament was in 2013 when he finished third for AU$750,000, and then a year later he took fifth for AU$800,000. Quoss also final table the 2013 $25,000 Challenge, finishing fifth for AU$51,000.

The first hand of the day saw Fabian Quoss double through Connor Drinan, and that set the fast pace of play. Just five hands later, Fedor Holz fell when he called off his short stack with king-queen and failed to get there against Drinan's pocket fours. Then, on Hand #12, Sam Greenwood followed him out the door after his ace-deuce fell to Drinan's queen-nine after a nine spiked on the river.

On Hand #26 of the final table, it was Drinan who fell in fourth place after getting involved in a big hand with Quoss. Holding a queen-high flush, Drinan was faced with a decision for all his chips. He used both his time extensions to contemplate the decision, and with literally a second left on the clock he called off to discover his queen-high flush was no good against Quoss' ace-high.

Three-handed play last for awhile, but eventually Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier bowed out in third place when his ace-eight failed to hold against the king-queen of Quoss, who in turn took a big chip lead into heads-up play against start-of-the-day chip leader Ben "Ben86" Tollerene.

The two jostled back and forth, with Tollerene even receiving a double. However, Quoss' chip lead proved too big to overcome and on Hand #125 of the final table, Tollerene was eliminated after his jack-ten failed to overcome the king-jack of
Quoss.

Tollerene had to settle for runner-up and a AU$924,140 (USD$654,634) consolation prize, which may have paled to the countless millions he's won online, but still marked the largest live score of his career.

Congratulations to Fabian Quoss, the 2016 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge champion!

Ben Tollerene Eliminated in 2nd Place (AU$924,140)

Hand #124: With the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}, Fabian Quoss moved all in from the button. Ben Tollerene had the {J-Spades}{10-Diamonds} in the big blind and only a little over 200,000 in chips left. Tollerene decided to make the call and put himself at risk, but he saw the bad news that he was dominated when Quoss turned over his hand.

The {6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop kept Quoss in the lead, and the {5-Hearts} on the turn only took away an out from Tollerene because it gave Quoss a flush draw.

The river was the {5-Diamonds}, and that was that. Tollerene was eliminated in second place, and for that he earned AU$924,140.

Hand #79: Ben Tollerene limped in with {9-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and Quoss checked with {9-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. {K-}{Q-}{J-} and Quoss check folded to Tollerene's bet.

Hand #80: Fabian Quoss raised on the button with {Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and he picked up the pot.

Hand #81: Ben Tollerene raised from the the button with {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and Fabian Quoss called from the big blind with {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. The flop brought out {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} and Quoss checked to Tollerene who bet 80,00. Quoss made the call and on the turn the {3-Spades} hit.

Quoss checked again, and Tollerene moved all in for 353,000. Quoss went into the tank for a bit before calling, and Tolleren found himself in a great spot to double up.

The river was the {5-Hearts}, and Tollerene doubled up.

Hand #26 Fabian Quoss raised to 55,000 from the button holding the {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and Connor Drinan defended the big blind with the {q-Clubs}{9-Spades}. The {7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} flop saw Drinan check his open-ended straight draw and Quoss bet 75,000 with his nut-flush draw.

Drinan called and then checked after the dealer burned and turned the {9-Clubs}. Quoss, who hit his flush, bet 135,000 and Drinan called to see the {6-Clubs} river. Drinan, who improved to a queen-high flush, led out for 165,000, and Quoss moved all in. Drinan, who only had 292,000 behind, used both of his time extension chips to contemplate the decision.

With literally one second left on the countdown, Drinan called off and discovered the bad news. Drinan took home AU$441,980 for his fourth-place finish, which vaulted him over $8 million in career lifetime earnings.

Sam Greenwood - 5th Place
Sam Greenwood - 5th Place

Hand #11: Fabian Quoss raised to 40,000 under the gun and Sam Greenwood called from the big blind to see a flop of {j-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}, which they both checked. Greenwood then checked the {7-Hearts} turn and Quoss bet 50,000.

Greenwood called and then checked the {2-Clubs} river. Quoss thought for a bit before betting 80,000 and Greenwood, who held the {j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, made the call. Quoss showed the {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and won the pot thanks to his kicker.

Hand #12: Connor Drinan raised to 40,000 from the cutoff with the {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and Greenwood moved all in for 235,000 from the small blind. Drinan opted to call with additional 195,000 and Greenwood showed the {a-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, which made him a 59% favorite.

The {j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop was nothing special, and neither was the {4-Diamonds} turn. However, that is when the {9-Diamonds} spiked on the river to put an end to Greenwood's day in fifth place.

Fedor Holz Eliminated in 6th Place (AU$281,260)

Fedor Holz - 6th Place
Fedor Holz - 6th Place

Hand #6: Connor Drinan shoved all in from the button and Fedor Holz hit the tank on the button before calling off for 172,000. Both blinds folded and the cards were turned up.

Drinan: {4-Spades}{4-Hearts}
Holz: {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}

The {2-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop was no help to Holz, who became a 3-1 dog. The {A-Spades} turn was a blank, and so was the {9-Spades} river.

Holz was in the tournament for three bullets, meaning he actually lost money in this tournament.
