Just 26 of 160 Survive The First Flight With Aussie De Jong On Top

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Brent De Jong
Brent De Jong

The 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship kicked off inside the cool confines of the Crown Poker Room in otherwise steamy Melbourne, Australia Wednesday.

Veteran Australian Poker Commentator Paul Khoury was joined by Aussie Millions Tournament Director Joel Williams and English Cricketer and Australian Reality TV Star Freddie Flintoff to make the call to shuffle up and deal for the first of four starting flights scheduled for Event #1 $1,150 No-Limit Hold 'em just after 6 p.m. local time.

Registration for the flight was open for the first six 40-minute levels with a total of 160 players buying in and putting the event well on the way to meeting its $1 million prize pool guarantee.

Australian Poker's most famous face lasted all of one hand today, with 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe Hachem registering late, then promptly running a turned straight into a rivered full house.

He was joined on the rail by several other well known players who busted before Wednesday's flight was through, including 2013 WSOP bracelet winner Jarred Graham, Two-time European Poker Tour Main Event finalist Xuan Liu, World Poker Tour television personality Tony Dunst and 2014 WSOP APAC Main Event champion Scott Davies.

By the time twelve 40-minute levels were through just 26 remained with Brent De Jong leading the pack. De Jong managed to grab the lead in the late levels thanks to a hot run of cards that included picking up aces against Tho Nguyen's kings.

2014 November Niner Felix Stephensen also bagged a top ten stack.

This group will return to battle for a seat at the nine-handed final at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday with survivors from the next three flights set for Thursday through Saturday also joining them.

As a repechage event, players who bust out from previous flights may reenter any of the remaining flights.

The 2016 Aussie Millions Poker Championship continues Thursday January 14 with the start of the first mixed game event on the schedule. Event #2 $2,500 H.O.R.S.E will begin at 12:10 p.m. local time Thursday with several players already winning their way in through live satellites at Crown.

Event #1 $1,150 No-Limit Hold'em will also continue Thursday with Day 1 Flight 2 kicking off at 6:10 p.m. local time and the PokerNews Live Reporting Team on hand to follow all the action.

Tough Pill to Chew On

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

The last three hands were just announced and it would turn into a big one. Sinan Aydogan had lost a bigger pot against James Keenan and then got his last 29,500 in with the {8-Spades}{10-Clubs}. Gary Di Paola shoved as well and Stevan Chew looked them both up with the biggest stack, holding {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Di Paola had the best of it with his {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, but Aydogan spiked a lucky triple up on the board {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for two pair. Chew was left with dust after having to pay another 48,300 to Di Paola and elected to fold the last two hands.

Sapitavicius Busts to Shaikh

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Arunas Sapitavicius
Arunas Sapitavicius

With the board reading {3-Hearts}{4-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, Adeel Shaikh checked in the big blind. Arunas Sapitavicius moved all in for 23,600 into a pot of around 32,000 and Shaikh gave it some thought before tossing in the chips for the call. Sapitavicius immediately said "good call" and turned over his {K-Spades}{10-Spades} for the flush draw.

Shaikh held {4-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of fours only, but that was still enough to win the pot with a meaningless {A-Clubs} appearing on the river.

Andreadis Up; Benson Out

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Gary Benson lost the short stack grind and just headed to the rail, pretty much exactly at the same time as the opponent of Jim Andreadis. The latter won a flip for 33,000 with pocket jacks versus {A-}{Q-} and the board ran out in favor of the Australian.

Another local player was taking a stab at reducing the field. However, Stevan Chew didn't get there with {A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for 18,600. His opponent was ahead preflop with {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} and doubled up after the board ran out {J-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

No Bag for Bindon

Nível 12 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante

Tim Bindon won't be gagging up chips tonight after just running out of them entirely. From the button he shoved a short stack with {K-}{J-} and the player from one seat over looked him up with the {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. An ace on the flop along with two clubs left Bindon in desperate shape and he was on his way out as soon as the third club came on the turn.

Another player was sent to the rail at almost the same time, thus reducing the field to 29 hopefuls.
