Mike McDonald Leads After Day 1 of the $100,000 Frenzy

Nível 9 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Day 1 of the 2014 Aussie Millions AU$100,000 Challenge was, well, an insane flurry of action like nothing we've ever seen before. At the end of the day, 66 entries were generated. Ten of those came from the tandem of Isaac Haxton and Daniel Negreanu, each of whom fired five bullets into the event. Negreanu ended the day with 221,500 in chips, while Haxton busted for a fifth time.

Leading the 29 survivors into Day 2 was Mike "Timex" McDonald. After a making a late appearance to this year's festival, McDonald finished an exciting first day with a field-leading 468,500 in chips. The only other player over 400,000 to finish was Paul Newey, and he bagged up 428,500. Then Richard Yong, Antonio Esfandiari, and Phil Ivey round out the top five stacks.

With over 40 unique players in the event, the field was jam packed with poker's high-rolling superstars. Jason Mercier, Justin Bonomo, Doug Polk, Viktor Blom, Patrik Antonius, Fabian Quoss, Philipp Gruissem, Mike Watson, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, and Tom Dwan were just a handful of names to take a shot (or two, or three) and advance to Day 2. Joining them will be reigning World Series of Poker Main Event champion Ryan Riess, who he bagged up 208,500 in chips.

Furthermore, there are rumors swirling of even more entries to come. Registration and reentry will remain open right up until the start of Day 2 at 12:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, and the word on the street is that Tobias Reinkemeier will be back in the mix after busting, and Sorel Mizzi and Scott Seiver may join up on their day off from the Main Event final table. The field could easily eclipse 70 entries, which would put quite the icing on the cake for this highly-anticipated event.

The Day 2 table draw, prize pool, and payouts won't be made available until registration officially closes, so you will have to stay tuned for that information. If Day 1 is any hint of what's to come in this event, Day 2 will be a day you won't want to miss. Be sure to stay tuned right here to PokerNews for all of the live updates straight from the tournament floor as we hunker down for a long finish.

Nasty River Sends Negreanu to the Rail

Nível 8 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante
Daniel Negreanu

We missed the action, but we do know that Daniel Negreanu got his stack of 100,000 or so all in on a flop of {7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} holding the {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, which was well out in front of Igor Kurganov's {j-Spades}{8-Spades}.

The {10-Hearts} turn gave Kurganov a gunshot straight to a nine, but it would be the {J-Hearts} river that would put a dagger through Negreanu's heart. He put on some lighthearted theatrics for the dozens of railbirds, but Negreanu absurd the blow as well as could be expected.

Antonio Esfandiari inquired whether or not Negreanu would reenter, and the answer was not right away but probably later.

Olympians David Wise, Katie Uhlaender, and Nick Goepper Discuss Enthusiasm for Poker

The Winter Olympics in Sochi kicked off today, and Team USA will be out in full force hoping to bring home more gold medals than there are gold bracelets in several years’ worth of World Series of Poker editions. Many athletes competing at the Winter Games have worked hard to position themselves for Olympic glory, but they also enjoy competition outside of their respective sports, including playing poker.

Three of the Team USA Olympians — David Wise, Katie Uhlaender, and Nick Goepper — are a few of America’s best hopes for bringing home gold medals, and they aren’t shy about sharing their enthusiasm the game of poker. To them, poker may not require much physical athleticism, but it does require the same mental toughness that has helped push them to the forefront of their individual Olympic sports.

In a recent feature article on PokerNews, author Michael Friedman talked with Wise, Uhlaender, and Goepper. You can read the article by clicking here.

Welcome to the 2014 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge

Phil Ivey

The Aussie Millions Main Event is currently playing down to the final table of seven, and it'll soon be complemented on the other side of the room by the start of the prestigious $100,000 Challenge.

The two-day event is expected to draw some of the biggest names in the game including the legendary Phil Ivey; 2013's biggest online winner Niklas "ragen70" Heinecker; 2013's biggest online loser and the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event champ Gus Hansen; last year's Main Event third-place finisher Patrik Antonius; and Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu, just to name a few.

The $250,000 Challenge, which kicks off on Sunday, already has 24 players confirmed, so it's no stretch of the imagination to assume they will all be playing the $100k, not to mention anyone else who joins them. In other words, it should be quite the turnout here in Crown's Poker Room.

Remember, this tournament is "Pot Limit" pre flop and "No Limit" post flop. Players will start with 100,000 in starting chips and late registration and re-entries are available until the end of Level 6.

Action is set to kick off in less than a half an hour, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out this video where Antonio Esfandiari and Jason Mercier discuss the $5,000 free roll they gave PokerNews Editor in Chief Donnie Peters not to cut his hair:
