Event #7: €10,400 Main Event Championship

Dia 3 Começado

Welcome to the Biggest Tournament in Europe: Day 3 of the WSOPE Main Event

Constant Rijkenberg - knows how to win a million euros.
Constant Rijkenberg - knows how to win a million euros.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Hotel Majestic Barriere for Day 3 of the €10,400 World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) main event championship. The most prestigious tournament to be held on European soil attracted 593 of the worlds greatest poker players. Over the past three days the players have been busy reducing that field size down to a more manageable chunk. Only 116 players remain and, although we have a long way to go, some prominent names are starting to make their poker shout and people are starting to prick up their ears.

As usual in a tournament as big as this, there was a lot of options available to the poker purist when it came to finding a table to watch. In the end there was simply no competition with table eight needing steel legs to prop it up because of the weight of all the chips. Four of the players who finished in the top ten chip counts were working hard at that table and they included Hoyt Corkins (429,900), Rifat Palevic (353,500), Jake Cody (323,200) and Tom Bedell (301,900). Just when we thought it was a lock that the chip leader would rise up from the heat of that particular table someone else emerged to lead the field. The very popular Constant Rijkenberg knows just what it is like to win a prize of over one million euros after taking down EPT San Remo in 2009 for €1,508,000. Rijkenberg looked cool as a cucumber, all day, and whilst table eight was spewing out heat, Rijkenberg didn't break a sweat, as he quietly went about his business growing his stack to 462,800.

Also in the top ten is the legend himself, the all-time money list leader, Erik Seidel (291,900) and potential player of the series (if there is such a thing) Shawn Buchanan (291,400). But it is still early days and there is plenty of time for the likes of Arnaud Mattern (237,300), James Dempsey (231,100) and Patrik Antonius (228,100) to make their presence known.

Action starts at 12.00 (CET) so make sure you stay right here with Pokernews for the greatest action in the poker world.

Let's Play Cards

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

The dealers have been given the command, and the cards are in the air on Day 3.

We have 116 players left, and we'll play seven levels or down to 24 players today, whichever comes first.

Waxman Doubles Up

Matt Waxman has started the day with luck very much by his side. Robert Mizrachi opened up the pot with a standard raise in mid-position and Waxman was seated to his direct left and moved all-in for 48,800. The action folded around to Michael Pesek (125,600) in the small blind and he also moved all-in. Mizrachi sensed that the two needed a room so he moved out and let them get on with it.

Showdown

Waxman{5-Hearts} {5-Spades}
Pesek{8-Hearts} {8-Clubs}

So Waxman needed some help and it arrived on the flop.

Board: {6-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {4-Spades} {6-Spades}

"Unlucky Bro," said Waxman.

Jacobson Loses His First Hand

Martin Jacobson started the day with 180,600 and a player of his quality can do a lot with a stack like that. Unfortunately, he has gotten off to a bad start, by losing his first hand, but there is a long way to go.

Jacobson raised to 5,100 in mid-position and Ricardo Tavares three-bet to 17,000 on the button. Jacobson decided to call and they shared a flop of {Q-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {3-Clubs}. Jacobson check-called a 22,000 flop c-bet but then both players shut down and checked both the turn {6-Hearts} and the river {8-Diamonds}. Tavares was first to turn over, as the first aggressor, and his {A-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} prompted Jacobson to muck his hand.

Mizrachi Shows Waxman a Queen

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

Action folded to Robert Mizrachi in the small blind and he limped in. Matt Waxman checked his option in the big blind and the flop came down {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. After Mizrachi checked, Waxman bet the minimum for 2,400. Mizrachi called.

The turn brought the {5-Clubs} and Mizrachi led for 4,300. Waxman gave it some thought, but then folded his hand. Mizrachi showed the {Q-Clubs} with a smile.

Karr Dodges an Early Crash

Nível 13 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante

On the first hand of the day, Jose De La Guardia hurried to his chair as the cards were already out, and he made a larger-than-standard raise to open the pot. A few players at the table raised an eyebrow at his late arrival, but he was allowed to play his hand. In any event, McLean Karr toyed with the decision for a bit before folding, and James Dempsey flatted to see the flop.

"Flushy" and De La Guardia would end up playing a relatively small pot on a jack-high board that included {J-} {6-} {2-} {X-} {X-}. At showdown, De La Guardia turned over {6-} {6-} for the set, and Dempsey was thrilled to see that he'd managed to lose the minimum with his overpair {Q-} {Q-}.

As thrilled as Dempsey was, he was only half as thrilled as Karr. De La Guardia claimed he didn't realize the blinds were only 1,200/2,400, and his over-raise allowed Karr to fold his pocket deuces without incident. Things could have gotten awfully messy for Karr if he'd been allowed to play that pot, and he and Dempsey are still discussing the ordeal a few minutes later.
