Rosen Leads Into Day 2; Defending Champion Bord Still Alive

Welcome back to PokerNews' live coverage of the 2011 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event. It's be a great series so far here in Cannes, France -- the new home of the WSOP Europe -- and continues today with Day 2 of the biggest event of them all.

This €10,400 Main Event Championship attracted a whopping 593 players over the course of two starting days and 328 of them remain in contention. Heading the pack is Jamie Rosen, who bagged up 162,700 in chips after Day 1a. Behind him are Lari Sihvo with 144,725 and Tommy Vedes with 142,775. Both Sihvo and Vedes played on Day 1b.

Previously, the largest-ever WSOP Europe Main Event was back in 2007 and 2008 when Annette Obrestad and John Juanda emerged victorious, respectively. In each of those years, the main event attracted 362 players. Comparing the 2007 and 2008 field size to this year, the tournament has grown nearly 64%. Comparing the number to last year's field size, you'll find a growth of over 71%.

Speaking of last year, defending champion James Bord is still alive and well with above-average chips. He bagged up a flat 60,000 at the end of play last night, which puts him roughly 6,500 chips above the mean. We'll be keeping a close eye on him all day today in his title-defense run.

Other notables still remaining are Robert Mizrachi, McLean Karr, Leo Boxell, Tony G, Johnny Chan, Ben Lamb, Matan Krakow, Olivier Busquet and Freddy Deeb. Also still alive are current WSOP November Niners Ben Lamb and Sam Holden.

We've yet to receive the prize pool and payout information from the WSOP staff, but once we do, we'll surely toss it your way. So far, we've heard some rumors swirling of a first-place prize worth €1,400,000.

Day 2 is set to kick off soon at 1200 CET (0300 PT). Another six 90-minute levels of play are scheduled with the blinds starting 300-600 with a 75 ante. Once the cards are in the air, the updates will be flying so keep that mouse hovering over the refresh button to get your poker fix all day long.

A Numbers Game

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

The 2011 World Series of Europe Main Event has smashed its previous record. An incredible two days of registration saw 593 players put up the €10,000 required, and they've generated a prize pool of nearly €5.7 million. That money will be divided among the final 54 players, and the bottom payout is worth twice the buyin. Everyone in the final eight will earn six figures this week, and the top three will all become half-millionaires.

The lucky man or woman who ends up with all the chips will earn a cool €1.4 million -- the largest prize ever awarded at the WSOPE... and the largest ever awarded in France, too!

Oh, and the bracelet. With the prize fixed firmly in their sights, the 328 remaining players are gunning for WSOP gold.

Binger Out-Flops Pesek

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

Michael Pesek and Nick Binger were involved in a pot on the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop. Given the size of the pot and position of the players -- Pesek in the small blind and Binger in the cutoff -- we can assume Binger opened preflop and Pesek three-bet with Binger fatting, but we can't be sure.

On the flop, Pesek fired 5,500 and Binger made the call to see the turn, which was the {3-Spades}. Both players checked and then the river completed the board with the {7-Diamonds}. Both checked again.

Pesek tabled the {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}, but lost to Binger's {A-Hearts}{6-Clubs}.

Ace-King Good All the Way for Soulier

Nível 7 : 300/600, 75 ante

On the {J-Spades}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Fabrice Soulier check-called a bet of 1,500 from Sergey Tikhonov to see the {3-Diamonds} land on the turn. Soulier checked again and Tikhonov kept at it with a bet of 3,200. Soulier called.

After the {A-Hearts} fell on the river, Soulier checked. Tikhonov fired 5,500 and Soulier instantly announced that he called. Tikhonov tabled the {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}, but lost to Soulier's {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}.

Arnaud Moves Into Six Figures

Action folded to Arnaud Mattern on the button and he raised to 1,350. Rhynie Campbell, who won the 2007 World Poker Tour Turks and Caicos Poker Classic, made the call from the big blind and the flop came down {A-Spades}{5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Both players checked through to see the {6-Diamonds} come out on the turn. Campbell bet 1,525 and Mattern raised to 4,225. Campbell folded and Mattern won the pot.

The {A-Spades}{10-Clubs}{7-Spades} fell and Harman bet 2,300. Hakim put in a raise to 5,500 and Harman called.

The turn was the {4-Spades} and Harman checked. Hakim bet 6,100 and Harman folded.
