Kid Poker's Presence Still Felt in Main Event

On his way to register for the $1,111 Little One for One Drop, Daniel Negreanu came to check on Kenneth Cleeton. He also shared what his basic strategy for the Little One Drop will be:

"I'm going to shove a lot."

There were some people on Twitter suggesting that Negreanu swap in for Kenneth's dad (also named Kenneth), and he even asked if Negreanu wanted to trade places.

"I'd love to, but I don't think they'd let me," Negreanu said.

Player Interview: Matthew Moss

Nível 13 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Matthew Moss
Matthew Moss

London-based poker player Matthew Moss was the first to reach the major milestone of accumulating one million in chips.

Moss had a deep run in last year's Main Event, finishing in 21st place. Even so, he doesn't consider himself a tournament player, mainly because he spends a good chunk of his time playing cash games in Macau.

Moss just relocated to the tan section of the Amazon Room room after his table in Pavillion broke. He found former November Niner and recent bracelet winner, Tom Cannuli, along with Niall Farell, and DJ MacKinnon awaiting him.

PokerNews caught up with Moss, holding about 1.35 million chips as the tournament paused for a player break and a color-up.

PokerNews: How does it feel to be the first player to reach a million?

Moss: It feels pretty good. It's been an epic day. Everything has gone really, really well so far. I've just had a bunch of really good hands.

PokerNews: Do you remember when you reached a million chips last year?

Moss: I don't. I think I just chugged along and had about average the whole way. Today has been more explosive.

PokerNews: What are the odds you better last year's results?

Moss: Pretty long. I'm definitely going to have to put the pressure on in the next couple of levels. I'm not a tournament player so much, so I'm not used to that. But I've been told I have to start bullying some people. I'm going to have to get on that.

PokerNews: Who's telling you that?

Moss (laughing): Some bad influences.

PokerNews: How do the Macau cash games play compared to something like this. It's obviously two different worlds.

Moss: Yes, it's very different. The hours are much worse in Macau. People complain about them here, but you play so many more hours in Macau. You play 36 hours straight all the time, so it's a lot more brutal out there. It's quite tough, as well.

The Main Event field is quite a nice field. You get to play with a lot of different people. In Macau, you see the same faces every day, and they're quick to get you if you're not playing well.

PokerNews: How's your new table?

Moss: Pretty bad. I had two really good tables before this one. The second one I didn't realize was a good table because I was on my phone the whole time, then I looked up at saw what was going and realized I should have been paying more attention. Now, this one looks like a not-so-good table.

PokerNews: It helps that you're bringing a ton of chips to the table.

Moss: Yeah. I was told with the money bubble coming up that I'm going to make a bunch of money.

Bustout Interview: Mike Matusow

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

Mike Matusow went to Twitter just after busting the Main Event on a bluff.

PokerNews set out to get the details and found Matusow flying down the hallway on his scooter, no doubt trying to get out of the Rio as fast as possible. We didn't even have to ask questions; he just volunteered the details.

"I grenaded," he said. "A guy raised up front. He'd been playing loose all day, so I wasn't worried about him.

"The button flats. He's been three-betting a ton, and nobody's really been playing back, and I thought this was a good time to squeeze."

"I made it 21,500. The original raiser folded, and the other guy called. The flop came {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Spades}. I knew he didn't have a ten or a four. I made it 26.5k to go, and of course, he called. There was a blank on the turn, and I shipped it in. I had ace-queen, and he had ace-king.

"He hasn't had it all day and now decides to wake up with a hand."

You could see the pain on Matusow's face and hear it in his voice. Exit interviews are always hard, but this one made the devastation of busting the Main abundantly clear.

"I'm so frustrated. I had the worst table draw. I played for three days, and I had horrible table draws every day. I just lost it. I couldn't stay patient. I'm so mad at myself right now because I know better."

By all accounts, Matusow has had a great summer with seven cashes that included three final tables. He was full of confidence, and in true "The Mouth" fashion, made sure everyone knew he was playing some of his best poker. Which makes this kind of misstep even more disheartening.

Danielle Andersen is Over the Moon

Danielle Anderson
Danielle Anderson

Danielle Andersen raised to 6,000 from late position, and the player on the button three-bet to 19,000. Andersen called.

The flop came {10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Andersen bet 16,000, and the button called. The turn was the {k-Clubs}, and Andersen checked. The button bet 45,000, and Andersen check-raised to 100,000. The button called. The river was the {2-Diamonds}, and Andersen moved all in for 141,000. Her opponent thought for a while and eventually called.

Andersen tabled {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for top set, while her opponent revealed {5-}{4-} for two pair.

Andersen raked in a huge pot and now sits on about 565,000.

Matthew Moss the First to Cross the Million-Chip Mark

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Matthew Moss
Matthew Moss

A player in early position raised, Matthew Moss three-bet to 13,200 from middle position, and the player in the big blind four-bet shoved for about 95,000. The initial raiser folded, and Moss mulled it over for a few moments before he called with {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}, leading his opponent's {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}.

The board came down {J-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}, giving Moss jacks full of sixes to eliminate his opponent.

Immediately following that hand, Moss' table broke into the Amazon Room where he got tangled in a pot before he could unbag his chips.

Moss opened to 5,200 from early position, the player on the button three-bet to 15,000, and Moss called.

They checked to the turn of a {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts} board. Moss checked to his opponent, who bet 18,000. Moss check-raised to 73,000, and his opponent tanked for about two minutes and folded {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} face-up.

Moss showed the {10-Hearts} as he collected the pot and is first player above the million-chip mark.

"The Mouth" Blows it All Away

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mike Matusow
Mike Matusow

We just arrived at the table to see Mike "The Mouth" Matusow involved in a big pot against Michiel Brosky. The board read {k-Clubs}{10-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs} with nearly 100,000 in the pot already.

Matusow was in the small blind and shoved his remaining 80,000 plus into the middle. Brosky thought aloud for a couple seconds wondering if Matusow had a straight and/or flush draw. He didn't think for long before tossing in a couple chips to signify a call.

Matusow tabled {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} and Brosky rolled over {a-Clubs}{k-Spades}. Matusow could only catch a jack to stay alive, but the river brought the {9-Spades}. Matusow quickly packed up his bag and headed out the doors on his scooter. The room all of a sudden got a lot quieter with The Mouth's disappearance.

Harwood Loses Flip to Bust

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Loni Harwood
Loni Harwood

Seyed Tabib limped in from the small blind and Loni Harwood raised to 52,400, leaving herself with just 2,700 behind. Tabib announced "I call" and was about to turn over his cards before he was reminded that Harwood was not all in yet. "Okay, I just call," Tabib confirmed and the flop fell {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

"I am sorry for you, I got the nuts," Tabib said right after betting 15,000 and Harwood called a few seconds later.

Loni Harwood: {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Seyed Tabib: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

While Harwood was not drawing dead yet, she needed running fours for quads to avoid elimination. It was all over after the {2-Spades} turn, making the {7-Hearts} river a formality. Alan Cutler then reminded Tabib that his verbal announcement was on the edge and that he should be more careful.

Player Interview: Allen Cunningham

Nível 12 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Allen Cunningham
Allen Cunningham

Five-time bracelet winner Allen Cunningham is playing under the lights in the Brasilia room on the third feature table.

Before play even started, the tournament staff announced the field would be playing into the money today. That means players are positioning themselves to reach that milestone by finding spots to gather chips and introducing some creative play to build their stack.

Cunningham wasted no time making his move. He started the day with 131,000 and had 630,000 heading into the first break of the day.

PokerNews caught up with Cunningham to talk about the heater that put him near the top of the chip counts.

Cunningham: It was a good five hands. I started with 130k and five hands later I had 550k.

The very first hand of the day, I won a nice 30,000 pot in the big blind. On the second hand, I had aces versus someone's ace-king and broke her for another 100,000-plus. The third hand, I think I stole the big blind. The next hand, I flopped fives full of deuces. My opponent made four deuces on the turn and I rivered quad fives. He was one of the guys at the table who covered me.

PokerNews: Have you adjusted your play now that you have more chips?

Cunningham: Honestly, I'm a little bit chip drunk right now. I'm not even sure how to play. I have to regroup and create a new game plan.

PokerNews: How is the play at your table?

Cunningham: It's hard to say because I've knocked out a few players and we've lost another few. The table dynamic keeps changing because we keep getting new players. So it's been hard to get a read.

Yesterday, though, I had a tough table and was able to climb from 25,000 to 130,000. So, I don't mind if it's a tough table or a soft one. I'm just taking it one hand at a time. If you're winning, you're always happy with your table. So of course, I'm really happy right now.

Cunningham, wearing a Superman shirt, probably feels a bit like a super hero right now.

A player in middle position raised to 4,500, Matthew Moss called from the button, and Jeff Flannery called from the big blind.

The flop came down {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and Flannery checked to the initial raiser who continued for 6,500. Moss raised to 16,200, Flannery reraised to 47,500, the initial raiser folded, and Moss called.

The turn was the {J-Hearts} and Flannery checked to Moss who bet 52,800. Flannery check-raised to 152,000, Moss called, and the {2-Diamonds} river completed the board.

Flannery bet 100,000, Moss shoved for 204,500, and Flannery tanked for about three minutes before he called.

Moss tabled {8-Spades}{7-Spades} for eights full of sevens, Flannery was forced to show a defeated {Q-Clubs}{8-Hearts}, and Moss won the biggest pot of the Main Event so far.

Jack Duong Puts the Pressure on... Himself

Jack Duong
Jack Duong

With the board reading {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{2-Spades}{K-Spades}{9-Clubs} and around 40,000 in the pot already, Bernardo Dias had put out a stack of orange from middle position, putting Jack Duong to a decision for his remaining stack of 31,200.

Duong called the clock on himself, and when the floorperson came over to the table and learned he called it on himself, she announced that he had ten seconds left to act, and began counting down.

Duong was surprised and asked, "Hold on, what?"

His tablemates explained the rule that if you call the clock on yourself you only get ten seconds. The countdown had begun, and Duong said, "Wait. You already started?"

"Seven, six, five," and in a fluster, Duong put forward his stack to call.

Dias tabled {A-Clubs}{9-Hearts}, and Duong's {Q-Spades}{10-Spades} for the straight to the king was good for the double up.
