Matt Grapenthein Leads the Field of Event #69: $1,500 Razz; Obst and Hellmuth Still Alive and Hunting

Nível 10 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
Matt Grapenthien
Matt Grapenthien

Day 1 of Event #69: $1,500 Razz has reached its conclusion and after 10 levels of play, it is Matt Grapenthein who leads the way. Grapenthein (82,300) already has a bracelet in stud of the high variety, and now he'll look to follow that up with a stud game of the low variety as well. There were 419 players who registered today and each and everyone one of them was looking to reach the promised land of the final table. Players created a prize pool of $565,650 and a first place prize of $132,957. Of course, everyone aim is to not only take home that significant chunk of money, but also the World Series of Poker gold bracelet that comes along with it. Only 63 of the remaining 102 players will make the money though, but each of those 63 players is guaranteed a payout of at least $2,261.

A heap of notable players failed to make it through the day, perhaps the most notable being Daniel Negreanu who took a short break after his finish in Event #62: $50,000 Poker Players Championship, hopped in, and was eliminated within two levels. Also not making it through the day wereJameson Painter, Jon Turner, Frank Kassela, Victor Ramdin, Randy Ohel, Max Pescatori, David Bach, Jeff Lisandro, Greg Raymer, and Calvin Anderson. Also, noticeably missing at the end of the day was the current player of the year lead John Racener. He will have to wait for another event to make a cash and bolster his current lead.

Some of those who did make it through the day, however, are Mike Ross (48,600), Mike Matusow (23,200), Benny Glaser (61,000), Jason Mercier (31,200), Dzmitry Urbanovich (29,500), and Jens Lakemeier (15,500). Also in the field still is 14-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth (45,900) who is still looking to add to his massive bracelet collection. James Obst is also still alive with 30,700 chips. Earlier in the year he won Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship, and looks to follow that up with another deep run here in this event. Obst is also looking to add some valuable Player of the Year points to his current total, as he can easily catch John Racener with a deep finish in this event.

Players are scheduled to return at 2 p.m. PDT on Friday where the plan is to play through another ten levels. PokerNews will be here with all the action so make sure you still around to catch the exciting conclusion of Event #69: $1,500 Razz.

Obst With a Miraculous Recovery

Nível 10 : 1,000/2,000, 200 ante
James Obst
James Obst

Earlier in the last level, James Obst was down to just 4,500 chips. Obst has made a miraculous recovery and has bolstered his stack to close to 40,000. We caught up with him in a recent hand.

Obst: {x-}{x-} / {5-}{K-}{3-}{2-}
Landreth: {x-}{x-} / {2-}{J-}{10-}{9-} — Folded
Opponent: {x-}{x-} / {3-}{K-}{A-}{A-} — Folded

On fourth street, Johnny Landreth had the betting lead and he led out, both Obst and the other player called taking them to fifth street. On fifth, Landreth checked. The other player in the hand led out and Obst called, so did Landreth.

On sixth street, Landreth checked with the lead. The other player checked as well. When Obst bet, both men folded.

Obst has already shown that he is one of the best razz players around by topping a star-studded field in Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship, and he can only solidify his standing by making another deep run here in Event #69: $1,500 Razz. Now that he's bolstered his chip stack a little, he may be able to do just that.

Owen: {x-}{x-} / {3-}{10-}{9-}{6-} / {x-}
Lakemeier: {x-}{x-} / {5-}{Q-}{4-}{10-} / {x-}

Action was already on seventh street and there was over 8,000 already in the middle of the pot. Adam Owen put out a bet and Jens Lakemeier was in the tank. He thought for about a minute before finally releasing his hand. As he went to muck his cards, Lakemeier accidentally revealed a {K-}.

Owen took down the pot and added to his already impressive stack from here on Day 1.

"The Young Prince Tortures The Barber"

Nível 8 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Urbanovich: {x-}{x-} / {3-}{6-}{4-}{5-}
Barber: {x-}{x-} / {3-}{8-}{7-}{3-}

We picked up the action on fourth street. Dzmitry Urbanovich led out at the pot with a bet. Andrew Barber called him. On fifth, Urbanovich led again and Barber called once more.

On sixth street, Urbanovich bet a for a third time, but this time, Barber checked his cards and tossed them away, awarding the pot to Urbanovich.

"The young prince tortures the barber," said Brandon Shack-Harris, who was also seated at the table. Urbanovich gave a wry smile at the comment.

"Just don't use the barber pun," Barber said. "It's been done so many times already."

Jens Lakemeier Looks to Prove His Knowlege of Limit Games

Nível 8 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Jens Lakemeier from the Big Bet Mix
Jens Lakemeier from the Big Bet Mix

Less than one week ago, Jens Lakemeier proved his knowledge of the big-bet mixed games by taking down his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet in Event #59: $2,500 Big Bet Mix.

Just a few days ago, he took his shot at Event #62: $50,000 Poker Player's Championship. Lakemeier did not make the money in that event, but he's still looking to prove that, not only does he have knowledge of the big-bet mixed games, but also the limit mixed games, as well. He's doing his best to make that statement by entering in this event.

Lakemeier will have to be at the top of his game, because also at his table is renowned mixed game expert Adam Owen, as well as Andrew Kelsall, who has already made the final table of three mixed-game events this summer, including the Big Bet Mix that Lakemeier won.

Kelsall and Lakemeier were recently involved in a pot together.

Kelsall: {x-}{x-} / {2-}{A-}{4-}
Lakemeier: {x-}{x-} / {2-}{7-}{9-}

Kelsall completed and was raised by Lakemeier. Kelsall called. On fourth street, Kelsall bet, and Lakemeier called. On fifth, Kelsall bet one more time, and Lakemeier let his hand go, awarding the pot to Kelsall.

"I can show you one," Kelsall said. He turned up a {3-} and scooped the pot, keeping his other card face-down.

Lakemeier has built up a nice stack already on Day 1 and will look to continue building on his way to a deep run here in Event #69.

A full list of payouts will be posted shortly in the tab above.

Leah With an Early Monstrous Stack

Nível 5 : 300/600, 75 ante
Mike Leah
Mike Leah

Mike Leah has very quickly amassed a monstrous stack here in Event #69. He has already more than quadrupled what he began with here on Day 1. Leah took on two opponents in the most recent pot.

Leah: {x-}{x-} / {4-}{A-}{2-}{3-}
Opponent: {x-}{x-} / {A-}{9-}{5-}{Q-} - fold
Opponent 2: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{2-}{2-} - fold

One player completed and was called by a second player and Mike Leah. On fourth street, Leah bet and was called by the original completer. The player holding {7-}{2-} raised before Leah made it three bets to play. Both players called, bringing them to fifth street. On fifth, Leah bet again and earned a fold from the player holding {7-}{2-}{2-}, but the original completer called.

Leah bet again on sixth, but this time, his opponent folded.

Leah turned over a {6-}, then a {7-}, and he raked in the pot, bringing his stack to right around 34,000.

Phil Hui Needs Roland Israelashvili To Leave

Nível 4 : 250/500, 50 ante
Phillip Hui
Phillip Hui

"What time does break end in the $3k?" Phil Hui asked as we walked by his table. There was about 20 minutes left on their break. "We need Roland [Israelashvili] to get outta here," Hui continued. "How much do you got over there, Roland? Like 44,000?"

Israelashvili shook his head, and the two continued discussing what Israelashvili's plans would be when his dinner break was over in Event #68.

A few hands later, Phil Hui completed with his {7-} up and was called by another player, who was also holding a {7-}.

Hui: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{10-}{6-}{9-} / {x-}
Opponent: {x-}{x-} / {7-}{9-}{9-}{2-} / {x-}

On fourth street, Hui check-called a bet, then led out when his opponent paired on fifth street. Hui led again on sixth and seventh, and his opponent called both times.

Hui separated his {10-} and {9-} from his {6-} and {7-}, then fanned out {4-}{3-}{2-} in the middle. His seven-six was good to take down the pot, and he raked it in.

Israelashvili at the table or not, Hui doesn't seem to be having much trouble raking in chips.

Player 2: {x-}{x-} / {4-}{5-}{6-}{4-} / {x-}
Player 3: {x-}{x-} / {6-}{9-}{10-} - fold

The pot was capped three ways on third street, and when Player 2 hit a five on fourth street, he bet. Alex Luneau raised, and Player 3 called before Player 2 re-raised. Luneau and Player 3 called. On fifth, the action slowed a little, with Player 2 betting and Luneau calling after hitting a ten.

On sixth street, Player 2 bet after pairing his four, and Luneau called. Both players checked seventh, and Luneau won the hand, revealing {a-}{2-}{3-} after Player 2 showed {2-}{6-}{6-}.

Rep Porter
Rep Porter

Rep Porter won his third WSOP gold bracelet last year in Event #69: $1,500 Razz and with the WSOP entering its home stretch an estimated field of 450 or so players will queue up and try to keep Porter from defending his title. Two of Porter's three bracelets have come in Razz so the field may have their work cut out for them.

The players will start with 7,500 chips and play ten one-hour levels before bagging for Day 2. There will be 15-minute breaks every two levels, and late registration will remain open until the start of level seven (roughly 9:45 pm).

This is the second to last non-Hold'em event of the summer with the $10,000 7-Card Stud Championship starting tomorrow. While the rest of the WSOP is made for No-Limit Hold'em, these next few days will give Stud lovers some fun before the Main Event begins this weekend.
